This book provides an interesting perspective of the fall of the Roman Empire through the eyes of a former slave captured from modern day Ireland, known as Hibernia. Connor begins his life as an orphan in Hibernia, taken as a slave and ends up fighting with the Visigoths against Rome. Along the way, he takes us on a tragic and heartbreaking journey showing a personal cost of slavery and violence within this world. Connor is a likable character, despite his flaws, and I enjoyed the book immensely and found the detailed word of mouth historical lessons from the Goths and Romans worthwhile.

I don't normally read modern adult fiction because of the sex and language, and this book has both. Other than that, I found it to be a very gripping and interesting story.
