Tate Introductions: Chagall

Rate this book
Born in 1887 in what is now Belarus, Marc Chagall is one of the best-known artists of the 20th century. His combination of wistful, fantastical scenes and vibrant palette have ensured his enduring popularity, but he is also considered an important pioneer of modern art whose sense of color was rivaled only by that of Matisse. Tate Chagall provides a lucid overview of this familiar, yet mysterious, artist.

He has a good sense of colour and rhythm but his drawing is just too shit for me to look at for more than a few seconds at a time. I sort of like Chagall and his style and his subject matter but I would probably get a lot more out of a less imaginative artist who could just draw properly.

I think he's worth a cursory look but I wouldn't consider him to be one of the 'greats'.
