69 books260 followersÅke Edwardson is a Swedish author of detective fiction, and a professor at Gothenburg University, the city where many of his Inspector Winter novels are set. Edwardson has had many jobs, including a journalist and press officer for the United Nations, and his crime novels have made him a three-time winner of the Swedish Crime Writers' Award for best crime novel. His first novel to be translated into English, in 2005, was Sun and Shadow. The second, Never End, followed in 2006.

Jonathan Wide is a PI with a rather complex character and used to work as a detective with the police in Goteborg (Sweden). He left the job because the work was not good for his mental health, He tried to get into the head of the perpetrator they were looking for and that did not do him any good.
A woman dissapears in Goteborg and Wide gets hired by her husband to look into the matter. Before he has really started she is found murdered.
Some more murders follow and together with Police inspector Sten Ard they try to find out who is doing the killing.
Meanwhile a young female detective Kajsa Lagergren is looking into attacks at shops & restaurants, of whom the owner is not born in Sweden. However her case has a lower priority than the murders so she keeps working alone.
Somehow she gets caught out by the killer and then it is up to Ard & Wide to solve the murders and catch the murder before their collegue ends up dead as well.
LOST SOUL by Ake Edwardson has its theme REVENGE. The story is told in a rather slow pace, which does happen more often than not in Scandanavian thrillers. The book lacks a decent description of the setting Goteborg, you never get a real feeling for the place through the writing. A similar problem have the main characters, they feel mostly two-dimensional. There is a general lack of tension throughout the book untill the end, which felt a bit too late for my tastes. The issues of Racism and Neonazis did not engage me, I have seen them put to better use in far better books.
Overall this book did fail to engage me as a thriller, and does not work very well for me as an advertisement for reading another book by this writer. Dissapointing and flat, and certainly the poorest of my recent scandianavia books.
Verloren ziel van Åke Edwardson is een misdaadroman met als thema wraak. Het verhaal wordt nogal traag verteld, maar dat is vaker het geval bij Scandinavische thrillers. Als de omgeving mooi wordt weergegeven, is dat een meerwaarde voor een boek. Dan waan je je op die plek. En ook al ben je niet lijfelijk aanwezig, toch is er het gevoel van vakantie. Dit verhaal speelt zich af in Göteborg, maar er wordt niets specifieks verteld over die stad. Ook de personen worden niet goed omschreven, zodat je ze niet echt leert kennen. Het verhaal gaat puur over de zoektocht naar de dader(s). Pas op het laatst wordt het verhaal nog spannend, als Kajsa wordt vermist. Ook geschiedenis, maakt niet uit waarover, of het nu de geschiedenis van een persoon of stad is, zou voor een verhaal een pluspunt zijn. Helaas is dat ook niet het geval. Wat maatschappelijke issues betreft, wordt er alleen geschreven over racisme en neonazisme als bijverhaal. Daarom waardeer ik dit boek met niet meer dan 1 ster.

Soms heel veel informatie in weinig tekst. Maar leest vlot en blijft spannend tot het einde.
