Ruple & Evelyn is the first book to be released from the Grandomina///Codex saga. It details the early years of the city of Grandomina, and the trials and tribulations of the turbulent Vane Dynasty
Ruple Vane has everything a man can ask for: good looks, health, a multitude of lovers, and incredible wealth. Adored by his courtiers and worshiped as a god by his people, he is the mind responsible for the greatest architecture and musical feats the world has ever seen or heard. But beneath this messianic exterior, his soul teeters on the brink of self-destruction, and every day of womanizing, alcoholism and the demons he believes to be hounding him, bring him closer to his doom.
But it wasn’t always like this. Once there was light; once there was even hope for his ruined soul; the birds sang, the sun shone, and blossom drifted on the breeze; once there was Evelyn.
Laurence Beveridge is the singer of the British rock band FVK (Fearless Vampire Killers) and the creator of the Codex Grandomina. He rarely stays in one place for more than a few days, spending most of his time on the road playing music. However, when he gets a chance, he likes to write fantastical tales about his ancestors living out an alternative history in a city called Grandomina.
He has written three Novels in his Codex Grandomina Saga: Ruple & Evelyn, Militia of the Lost and Unbreakable Hearts.
He originates from the marshy lands of East Anglia, and spends most of his time travelling between Suffolk, London and several other European countries. He has two cats, and is relatively firm friends with a dog called Hendrix.
I can't really decide if I really like this book or if it was just plain awful, maybe both in a weirdly good way. The book left me with so many questions, which I normally find really annoying but somehow it suits the theme of this series/concept. A must read for all FVK fans and I would even recommend this to other people as well because I did find the story very interesting and I'm now left with this urge to read more and more to find out what comes of Grandomina.
Just finished this book for the second time and still can’t decide how I feel about it… is it awful or amazing? (probably a bit of both). I liked the second half more than the first – the Underworld, encounters with the Cat/God. A lot of things were left unexplained or open… but I guess we’ll get more answers in the sequels. By all means a must read for all FVK fans though.
