Lesser Gods

Rate this book
Duncan Long (author of the Spider World Trilogy, HarperCollins; Antigrav Unlimited, Avon Books; and the Night Stalkers series, HarperCollins) has created a fast-paced novel of a future Earth where neighborhood snipers pick off salesmen, automation runs fatally amuck, and the resurrected dead walk the streets.

Wisecracking hacker Ralph Crocker finds himself in the middle of a bloody turf war between a cyborg named Death, organ-stealing street monstrosities, and genetically modified government agents. To survive, he must brave dangerous shadow worlds and trust “Alice” (who may be virtual), joining forces with her to confront the godlike man pulling strings behind the scenes to alter perceptions and perhaps even reality. The battle’s outcome will change the future in ways impossible to imagine – and may prove fatal to both Alice and Ralph.

With a witty narrative and skillful plotting, this story travels around the planet and beyond, from streets worked by automated prostitutes, to deadly tourist traps, to virtual worlds where anything can happen with fatal results. You’ll find it’s hard to put this novel down as the action unfolds, providing a sometimes-troubling view of the future.

I recommend this phenomenal book to anyone looking for a completely satisfying reading experience. Easily one of the best science fiction stories I've ever read.

When I started this book, I didn’t quite know what to make of it. I finally figured out that each chapter was devoted to the point of view of one person (the person named in the chapter heading) and the entire book is told from first person (my favorite — if it’s done right, and it is).

Mr. Long has created a disturbing and very dysfunctional society for the background of this work. Just staying alive is not for the feint of heart, slow on the feet, or for the slow on the draw. Just to make it worse, reality is being manipulated somehow and the main character often has trouble telling what is real and what is not.

Eventually … well, I don’t want to give the ending away.

If you like dystopian stories that border on madness, then this book is for you.

Well written and plotted. I never saw the end coming.

Well, it was certainly interesting. Rather like a cross between Johnny Mnemonic and Overland by Tadd Williams. The central character is amusing and a bit of a child but you find yourself rooting for him in the midst of a rather confusing plot line that thankfully resolves itself by the end, with a liberal sprinkling of hints throughout to keep the reader from pulling out hair. The resolution is quaint but tense and leaves open more without feeling left hanging. A good way to pass some time.

Flashback and forward to present.

It did not rate a 5 star because I had difficulty adjusting to the jumping around. Once my mind got hold of the twists and turns it became a game to play along with the author. Interesting concept of becoming a "lesser" god. It has a surprise ending.

A book that definitely needs more attention and better rating! It sure is a little tricky in the beginning with all the character changing but once you're on it, its incredible.
