"Basic Immunology: Functions and Disorders of the Immune System" is a well-written, concise textbook that introduces upper-level science majors to the foundations of immunology. Given the complexity of the subject, Abbas does a wonderful job of making this text easily readable. The only criticism I have concerns the associated pictures- quite often the captions that attempted to explain them were either confusing or extremely misleading in their wording. With that being said, this is a fine reference text for any science major who is interested in understanding the basics of how the immune system works.

Autor w lekturze jako metaforze życia w mistrzowski sposób wytworzył w czytelnikach uczucie beznadziei, pustki i zniechęcenia. Niezwykle wpływając na stan emocjonalny odbiorcy, przeprowadzał nas między rozpaczą podczas rozpoczynania rozdziałów aż do ekstazy odczuwanej na końcu każdego rozdziału.
Odczucia te nieporównywalne były jednak do zwieńczenia karuzeli wrażeń i niepohamowanej radości związanej z zakończeniem lektury. Wzruszenie, które poczułam, gdy przeczytałam ostatnią stronę i mogłam odłożyć dzieło Abbasa, zostanie ze mną na długo.
Apeluję gorąco o ustanowienie nagrody Złotej Maliny Literatury i obdarowanie nią tej książki jako laureata 2021. Mogę obiecać, że jest tego warta.

إنه كتاب عن المناعة، واحدة من المواضيع الصعبة بالنسبة للكثير من الطلاب، حتى عندما كنا ندرسها في المرحلة ما قبل الجامعية (في الثانوية) لم تكن بالتأكيد محببةً للكثير منا، فهي تتكلم عن الجهاز المناعي بخلاياه المتنوعة التي تتصل مع بعضها بعلاقةٍ تحكمها الأنزيمات والسيتوكينات والأجسام الأجنبية (الغريبة عن الجسم) وخلايا الجسم والهرمونات، بل وحتى الحالة النفسية للإنسان؛ ودون أن أغرقكم بالتفاصيل فلدينا في المناعة عناصر تتعرف على الأعداء وأخرى تحيدهم وثالثة تقتلهم ورابعة تقود القتلة وخامسة تكبح جماحهم كيلا يخرجوا عن السيطرة وأخرى تنشطهم كي يكونوا بمستوى التحدي-إن صح التعبير-؛ باختصار المناعة تتحدث عن حراس الجسم الأوفياء (خلايا الجهاز المناعي): كيف يعملون، كيف يَضعُفون، متى يخونوننا، وما دورهم في أمراض الجسم المختلفة.

لماذا كل هذا الكلام؟
لكي أخبركم أن هذا الكتاب الرائع يشرح كل ذلك بشكلٍ سلسٍ ووافٍ، ورغم أن فيه بعض التكرار، إلا أن ذلك يساعد على المراجعة بشكل جيد جداً.
في حال كنت طالب طب، وكان لديك بعض الوقت مع بعض (أو الكثير من) المشاكل في فهم المناعة، فهذا هو الحل الجيد جداً من وجهة نظري.

ملاحظة:
هذا الكتاب الرائع يجمع بين غزارة المعلومات من جهة وبين سهولة وسلاسة العرض لم لا يعرف عن المناعة من جهة أخرى.

A great companion for the study of immunology at university level.

I would advise students in their first or second year of immunology to pick up this book, as it provides a great starting point for learning the essentials. However, you will quickly outgrow this textbook when you start to specialise a bit more in later years. This would also be useful for anyone studying medicine, microbiology, physiology or other biological/life sciences, where the specifics might not be necessary.

It was too much repetition throughout the chapters for my liking. The book could easily have been much shorter if everything was explained in a consise way the first time it was mentioned.

Not a medical student. This textbook made me gain an understanding of the pathology of autoimmune diseases in the midst of treatment. This understanding has enabled me to advocate for myself in medical settings and take more ownership of my health. If you suffer from any autoimmune condition I would recommend reading this book. Medical background is absolutely not required. Many key terms and references will be familiar to those who have discussed blood work with their doctors (ANA, antibody tests, neutrophils, WBC ect.)

Regardless, this book has filled me with more complex emotions than some of the philosophy I have read this year.

This is the only text book I have read cover to cover during the first 3,5 years of medschool, and I think it says enough about the quality if the book.

Basic Immunology: Functions and Disorders of the Immune System

This review was suggested reading in my first year medical school curriculum. Diagrams and text are fairly conversational and rarely out of scope. Never took a dedicated immunology course before, but I thought the pacing was palatable from a medical perspective. Future editions could benefit from top level / big picture summarizations.

There are a couple editions out now but you can purchase older copies for ~ $10 on eBay.

So well written that I didn't have to rely on the diagrams to understand the concepts. There's a bit of repetition between chapters, but it's helpful as you're reading along to reinforce what you've already learned. Immune disorders are not addressed in a clinical context, but their pathology is explained well.

Bağışıklık sistemimiz, organ nakillerinde neden doku uyuşmaz, neler yapılabilir, kanserli hücreler ve bağışıklık sistemimiz arasındaki ilişki hakkında kendini sık tekrar etmesine rağmen iyi bir kitap.( Doktor adayları için iyi ama terimler çok var kitapta bu yüzden sağlık alanı dışındaki kişiler pek okumamıştır muhtemelen.)

One of the only textbooks I read first year, it was concise and usually clear. Sections on complement system and some of the later chapters (clinical applications) were in my reading relatively weak.

Perfect technical reading about immunology for the uninitiated. It gives you the general framework of human immune system and while it can get sometimes too verbose for the non specialist discussing the molecular and genetic complexes, it doesn’t obscure the main ideas.

It’s good book for introduction to immunology, however background in biochemistry is a plus if you don’t want to google. Chapters are clear and concise. I haven’t used this book as an textbook for final, hence i can’t recommend this book as a companion to test taking.
