A full-color chapter book based on LEGO(R) Friends--a buildable play world for girls!
Andrea, Mia, Stephanie, Olivia, and Emma are headed to the Whispering Woods for a summer campout! The girls build a campfire, toast marshmallows, and share spooky stories. But when they hear the legend of the Phantom Horse that supposedly haunts the Whispering Woods, will their weekend camping trip turn into a ghostly adventure?
Catherine (Cathy) Hapka has written more than one hundred books for children and adults, as a ghostwriter for series as well as original titles, including the Romantic Comedies Something Borrowed, The Twelve Date of Christmas, and Love on Cue. She lives in Pennsylvania.
I was not expecting this book to remind me of "The Crying of Lot 49," but the ending is entirely open-ended. Is there really a benevolent equine ghost in the Whispering Woods? But to reach the intriguing conclusion, you'll have to wade through a book that can be very slow going. Chapter 2, for example, consists almost entirely of a description of our heroines packing their camper, which is about as interesting as the Odyssey's famous catalogue of ships.
My 6 year old LOVES Lego Friends. She devoured this book in less than an hour. It is the perfect read for her...not too easy and not too hard. The "mystery" was interesting enough to keep her turning the pages until they revealed the ending, but not creepy enough to scare her. Hopefully she will reread it so that we get our 5 bucks worth out of it.
I read it as well to see what exactly she was reading. It is definitely not written for adults that's for sure, but it is the perfect read for its intended audience.
My 7 yr old daughter would give this book a higher mark. She really enjoyed reading it. When she heard I read it, too, she said "isn't it great! It was spooooky and had a mystery."
It is an upper 3rd grade reading level, but I think younger girls would enjoy it better than nine and 10 y olds. The action is a bit drawn out.
This is the 2nd in the series we've read so far. Both had a science theme, which is great for our geeky family.
This story was how Mia, Andrea, Stephanie, Emma and Olivia went on a mystery hunt and Andrea told everyone a horse ghost story. I liked when they found out it was Mia's puppy Charlie.
As we start to transition to a few chapter books with Chloe, she thought she would like to start with Lego Friends. It was a fun little read, better than I expected it would be.
The book was good! But maybe it could have been better. Anyway, we get to see another story of friendship here and we come to know that we can solve every problem if we are united together.
