Many of the editions by this group of authors are actually guides to books rather than the works.
If the author of the SparkNotes is known, they should be the first author. Please leave these SparkNotes Editors as the second author and the author of the original work as the last author. Do not combine with the original work. Do not put the author of the ORIGINAL work first.
While most of the information is helpful if you want a summary or to write a book report there are a couple big errors.
Under the glossary in Review and Resources it says that Thror labored in the Mines of Moria only to have Smaug take the treasure away. At the time of The Hobbit the dwarves hadn't been in Moria for hundreds of years, and Thror did not go to Moria until after Smaug took over Erebor. His original mines were in the Grey Mountains to the far north and no treasure was brought from there since the dwarves were driven out by dragons. All the treasure they found was from the Lonely Mountain in Erebor.
Beorn's house is also described as being in the middle of the woods, in Mirkwood, when Beorn's house is almost a day's journey from the borders of Mirkwood.
Because these are such big errors, especially if you've read the Hobbit, I'm rating it two stars.
I expected more of a literary dissect of the book. This was a summary of the chapters with brief insights. Nothing too in depth. But it did the job of pulling together some themes in the book.
