"Be strong and very courageous and you will find The Land of Love."
When the Queen valiantly gives her life to save her son, tragedy besets the faraway land of Perlfasond and Princess Cordelia Rose and her brother Roland enlist the help of a wizard to find the Tree of Broken Hearts. On their quest, they befriend an extraordinary group of colourful characters - Alphonse Pommery Earl, a wizard with a flaming temper, Charles Falconberg Earl, the yogi with magical powers, Peony Grizelda, the funny witch, and even a talking chair.
Author Maxine Tobias, a practising yogi of many years, strongly believes that children develop their sense of morality through stories that touch the heart with beauty, truth and compassion.
“The Book of Transformations is a powerful tale of good overcoming evil, of development and learning, but with a healthy dose of magic and humour that is sure to keep both parents and children glued to the pages.” Emily Heaton, illustrator of More Carrots For Me
I am not sure if the Book of Transformations is a children’s book written with adults in mind, or an adult tale that will be enjoyed by children. I have a feeling author Maxine Tobias set out to straddle that divide and has achieved her goal admirably.
Set in a mythical kingdom somewhere not that far away, we have a boy and a girl, aged 10 and 12 (the book is perfect for this age group) setting off on a journey to find an elixir to cure their ailing mother. On the way they have the most hair-raising adventures and meet the most incredible cast of surreal, magical and eccentric characters ever assembled in one story – I have to admit, the talking chair was more favorite.
The brother and sister in the story are ‘transformed’ by the time they arrive home again, but what they have learned about good and evil, kindness, honesty, charity and compassion will invite a transformation in the reader that will place this book up there with the very best children’s writers. I hope the Book of Transformations is the first in what will be a series from this thought-provoking new author.
