A hugely enjoyable "man on the run" novel, Moving Target is the story of Dougherty, a bushman living in the wilderness on the southern part of New Zealand during World War II. When he is drafted, he finds the regimented, brutally restrictive military life anathema to him, and returns to the wild. The military don't take well to desertion, of course, and what results in a tense battle between them and a man who has made the wild his home.
