Big Girls Don't Cry
Marina has spent most of her adult life on a diet. And although big girls aren't supposed to cry, in Marina's experience, they don't have much fun either. But when scientist David Sandhurst invites her to enrol in a test for a miracle weight-loss drug, Marina thinks her prayers have been answered.
Soon enough, Marina discovers that she's losing those excess pounds and gaining confidence. She's waving goodbye to her hips and hello to an exciting social life - and a whole new set of problems . . .

If anyone is completing a study around toxic diet and body shaming culture of the 90s, I'd fully recommend reading this book.
I received it free with a magazine aimed at young women in either the late 90s/ early 00s.
I'm not sure what the stand out bit is? Where her love interest is disgusted at himself that he could find her attractive even though she is *gasp* 15 whole stone at 5'10. Or the group of body positive activists that are only pretending to feel that way and all really desperately want to be slim. Or maybe it's the one man in the story who likes bigger women and then decides to leave his wife for losing weight because who cares about the actual person right? Its the number on the scale that matters damn it!
It's stayed with me for 20 years because of how horrible it is, quite an achievement in itself as I can't actually remember any other of the cheap chick lit books I read in my late teens.

"I learned a lot from this book; including 'binge-eating.' The author has depicted the thinking of our society very clearly and of how one should survive it if he/she are even slightly different from the society's set image of perfection. Weight does seem to be a problem for a major part of women in the world and, the truth of the matter of is that, it shouldn't be. At least, not for the reasons it is. There is always so much more to be seen of the person rather then just physical appearence. Our soceity and thinking still has to go a long way before becoming 'ideal.'

Irónica y muy divertida.
Quizás el título en español no le hace honor al contenido cuyo título original en inglés es "Big girls don't cry".
Lo cierto es que se trata de una novela chick lit muy amena y cargada de mensajes de empoderamiento femenino.

A really good laugh! I loved the diet story and the whole experiment around the diet pills - who was taking them, who was taking the dummies? A real good read for a chill-out afternoon!

Interesting read. Picked it up to read in half term, as a chick lit, but I learnt about binge eating & weightloss.

I actually love this book, it had me at the beginning as I could relate to the issues of binge eating and weight loss. My copy is now dog eared and old but I will be reading it forever.

El primer libro que leí por gusto y tengo que confesar que lo agarre de la biblioteca solo por su portada llamativa pero este libro me impresiono con su contenido. Una historia muy real y muy linda.
