Somewhere in her mind an invisible wind moaned and howled. Connie could feel the gooseflesh spring up like a blanket of tiny icicles…
The scene is Alaska and young Connie Gilbert has been sent there on assignment. A strange doctor, an ancient Eskimo and a secret map draw her and her friend Tom remorselessly into a century-old tragedy…and Connie is trapped in an icy cave where the cold hand of death reaches out for her.
This (Ballantine) Zodiac Gothic was okay. As with many of the others, it was more of a mystery - in this case a supernatural one - than a true gothic. It's also one that hits you over the head with the zodiac theme, making sure you know everyone's sign and how they all fit together (which will be helpfully explained by Sydney Omarr both before and after the story in case you aren't keeping track). Our protagonist is Connie, a Virgo who works as a trainer for the fictional Delta Electronics. On a trip to Alaska with her coworker and friend Tom, she starts being possessed by the spirit of an Alaska Native woman who lived long ago and tries to solve the mystery of what happened to her. Although it sounds exciting, I found the story dull as a whole, and I got sick of the way the characters all seemed to have the same speaking style, too. It wasn't terrible, though, but I've read better! Love the creepy cover. I might frame it!
