Stuck with a Stiff

Rate this book
Stuck with a Stiff – book one of the Stuck with a Series - think Castle and Beckett gone-country meet Betty Boop and My Cousin Vinny in the barnyard.
But this ain’t no ordinary barnyard.

There’s a lot more than a crazy rooster missing from the chicken coop, a bad ass cow causing a bunch of trouble and a dog looking like a creature out of a storybook. There’s a stiff too. A stiff - as in a dead guy - in a snow drift near the chicken coop.

Things aren’t lookin’ too good for Nicky Blane, who owns the farm. He’s used to creating fictional stiffs for his bestselling novels, not defending himself from being framed for murder.

Bonus Content Included:
In case you missed D. D.’s Stuck with a Series Prequel – Stuck with a Schmuck - which gives you a superfab fun set-up to Stuck with a Stiff – no worries...’cause it’s included!

And for all of you D. D. Scott Bootscootin’ Books and Cozy Cash Mystery Fans, The Mom Squad joins the fun!

#2: Stuck with a Stiff 3* 11/18/21 (120) Stuck with a... #1
Nick's farm in nothern Indiana; Chicago; NYC; Samantha 'Sam' Aldredge, Nick 'Nicky' Blane; book editor & 'her' author - #2 on bestseller lists
murder mystery; victim #1 beststeller author
Written in 1st person, dual POV: Nick & Samantha
I liked the first half of the story well enough I looked into other books by this author but wasn't very keen on the second one. I suppose it could've be different if I were a long-time fan of the other two series and their characters but this way with them being sprung on me at that point I didn't care for that very much.
Because of:
- all the typos/formatting issue
- the strange ending looking like a cliffhanger
- the fact the prequel was so short and not a cozy
I decided not to round up the avereage to a 4 star rating but down to 3 stars.

At this point I doubt I'll continue with this author/s. I set the very first book on my watch list and will give it a try if I see it for free.

I really enjoyed this story. I think the best part of this story is the reasoning behind the crime and how it backfired. I would definitely read more by this author.

A great easy read cozy

Terrific read that you will fly through. She's the editor of several best-selling ebook authors. Hurt after the divorce from her husband, acerbic tongued and knowledgeable in both forensics and designer shoes. He's the number two best-selling author of police procedural ebooks and is under a deadline to finish his next book. She's going to make sure of that!
Make sure by sticking with him until The End has been written and approved by her. Yes the weather could be better, a blizzard is not the best way to start off this adventure but needs must. Throw in the body of the number one best-selling author, a cow with attitude, a crazy hound, a crazy PR woman, a thug, the Italian Mob, the Gram Squad, a crazy cat loving aunt with a cannon of a shotgun and a rather beleaguered, put upon rooster. Stir well for an amusing read that, even though you'll have guessed the culprit before the end, will hold your attention until you hit The End,
A wonderful mix of zany, some batty characters that enliven what could have been a mundane plot.

This was a very entertaining story. I particularly enjoyed the array of characters assembled to support the two main characters. I loved the cow. The only downside to the book was that both main characters were speaking in first person. Several times I got confused as to which was speaking and had to go back a little to see where the switch had occurred so that I had the right sentiments attached to the right person. The confusion on my part might have been because I read the eBook with Calibre, rather than on one of the eReader's, and it could be that each person had their own typeface and I could have seen the switches with a proper reader. A fun book and I look forward to the next book in the series to see where the authors go with this new amateur detective partnership.

I enjoyed this story. The characters were interesting and very amusing. And, it turned out that the mystery was pretty good too! I listened to the Audible version, and the alternating narration of the male and female characters added to the story. This is the first in the series and I will probably check out another one.

An added plus for me was that the main character loves animals, as evidenced by her rage when the rooster was kidnapped. The crazy cat lady Aunt is a fun character and I'd like to see more of her and her "sweet pea" (a shotgun!!).

I can't get interested in a story where I find the protagonist such an unlikable self-important personality. One of the problems may be coming from the audiobook narration -- the narrator's voice is so glib I don't want to listen to her. I tried removing the narrated copy to see if normal reading (where I would here my own voice)would help, but I'll need to put it away for a while to gain some distance of perspective. I'll try again next week.

This was a mystery that kind of reminds me of a show on TV call, Castle. Instead of a detective and a writer, we have a writer and his editor who try to find out who killed a competing author and left him on his property. Humor is laced throughout the story, sometimes corny, looking forward to the next mystery.

Got this on specil as first in a series and was pleasantly surprised. As a freelance book editor it had lots of fun things I could relate to.
The charactors were hilarious and looking forward to more of them.
