I loved how this book introduced you to Alfie through a collection of four different stories. The first one defined this interesting child in exactly the right way: Alfie manages to lock himself inside his house while his mum is caught outside, not knowing how to get Alfie to open the door. Things escalate before Alfie emerges triumphant.
The stories which follow give us more glimpse into the life of this engaging child. I really loved reading these stories, and my daughter really enjoyed sharing them with me. Overall this is a 'win.' I hope we can find other Alfie books from our library as well!
Okay, so don't be discouraged when you pick this up and see it's 4 mini-stories (chapters) and it looks dated and dry. When you read how Alfie closes the front door, locking it, and his mom outside trying to get him to open it, children and parents can easily relate and see the humor. It's the antics of parenthood and childhood. We loved this one and read it one sitting.
Although this text is a little older this particular book contains 4 mini stories. The texts have a lovely familiar and family centred feeling to it. The humour is light hearted and is relatable to many making it more enjoyable.
This is a small collection of Alfie stories. Alfie has a special hideout; Alfie and Bernard to go visit somebody very special; there is a poem about geese; Alfie has an adventure when he goes with his mom and her friend to a cottage in the woods. Great illustrations.
We love the Alfie books -- all of them! We have a Big Brother and a little sister just like in the books, so it has always been fun, but I know people who love them who don't have this arrangement of kids. They are so fun. Any Alfie books you can find are great. We found some of the old collections on Amazon.com. I highly recommend the book with Alfie goes to the Seashore in it. Alfie and his rock Bonting are too precious. Alfie is a memorable, delightful and very real character. Shirley Hughes is a must for any family's library, we think.
Both my 5-year old and 2.5-year-old were enraptured by this book. My 5y.o. especially has a short attention span for books lately, and he sat completely still for this one. We talked about how Alfie must have felt being locked inside his house, and about the selfish boy at the birthday party, and the new boots, and the flood in the house when the babysitter was there. The book describes every day situations through the eyes of a small child. The illustrations were wonderful.
Both of my sons (5 yr old & 20 months old) love this book! Every night, they ask me to read one of them (especially the birthday party story). I love her drawings. My sons are a big fan of Dogger, too.
I was so sad when my kids thought they had outgrown these books, because I will NEVER outgrow Alfie and Annie Rose. Most are out of print, now, but anytime they are to be found -- GRAB them! Timeless, beautiful classics!
I'm not enamoured of the Alfie books like I am Dorothy Hughes's My Naughty Little Sister stories, but he evokes the same sense of wide-eyed innocence and fun of childhood.
I rememer reading these books when I was younger and I so vividly remember the illustrations. Now I have a nephew called Alfie and this books seem all the more special.
