Byrd Baylor has always lived in the Southwest, mainly in Southern Arizona near the Mexican border. She is at home with the southwestern desert cliffs and mesas, rocks and open skies. She is comforted by desert storms. The Tohono O’odham people, previously known as the Papagos, are her neighbors and close friends. She has focused many of her writings on the region’s landscape, peoples, and values. Through her books of rhythmic prose poetry, written primarily for children, she celebrates the beauty of nature and her own feelings of rapport with it.
Byrd has written many books for children.

Her books have been honored with many prestigious children’s book awards, including the Caldecott Award and the Texas Bluebonnet Award. All of her books are full of the places and the peoples that she knows. She thinks of these books as her own kind of private love songs to the place she calls home.

A beautiful book. After sharing this book with one of your favorite people, find a quiet peaceful place and play the game together.

Very interesting book of verse. It is all about a conversation between a man and girls is a field about favorites. Favorite sounds, colors, place to live, etc. It sparks good conversation. The illustrations are simple but very interesting. Most kids would not pick up the book because of the cover, but it is really quite good and Byrd Baylor always has interesting things.

I love Byrd Baylor's children's books. Guess who my favorite person is, is a wonderful story about a game played between two people who share their many favorite things. The artwork is done in soft water colors. This story is endearing and would be fun to read and then play together with your kids. So what is your favorite color? "You can't just say it's Blue, you have say what kind of blue." The blue of the sky when the sun is high or the blue of the Blue Jay. Now it your turn. Go.

I read this book to my son when he was small and always wanted a copy. I finally got one today, a used copy. Interestingly enough, it was a signed copy. That was pretty cool, and quite a surprise. It's just a very charming story for kids of the 8 to 10 range.

A fun story for children. They will want to think about and add their favorite things while you read aloud with them. I don't like this illustrator as well as Peter Parnall who illustrated some of her other books.

Another way to look at the five senses--much more in tune with the spirituality of nature and the feel of using our senses than the literal, scientific "these are what the senses are"--though it is still useful for teaching them. :)

She has a very gentle way of writing directly to the reader. Another book that I've enjoyed very much. After reading this with a child, you'll just have to play the "Favorite" game!

This would be a nice book to share with children, but, then, all of Bryd Baylor's books should be shared with someone.

An easy to follow dialogue about nature between a child and an adult. This encourages observation and thought about the natural world.
