First off, I have to state, despite this book being published around thirteen years ago, all of the content still stands today. This book, in a word, is inspirational, and I must say, it has humbled me. A vagina warrior is a woman or a man, working to end violence towards women and girls. Experiencing an act of violence at the hands of a man, is terrifying. Time kind of slows down, and you end up thinking, "Am I actually going to get out of this alive?" Imagining living that ordeal day in, day out, is truly unimaginable. Violence committed against women in their own homes is despicable and cowardly, but unfortunately we all know it still happens.
At the very beginning of this book, is an essay from Ensler, which is truthful, powerful, and very, very real. I was reading some of it, and I found myself agreeing and nodding my head. (As you do.) I am a follower of Ensler, and I think she is a very awe-inspiring individual.
Throughout this book, are photographs of Vagina warriors from around the world, and a short paragraph of how they became a Vagina warrior, and what it means to them. There was one particular lady that spoke out to me, because I am entirely against the practice of female genital mutilation. Agnes Pareyio owned a safe house in Kenya, where girls can go to escape this barbaric practice. She drives around from village to village with an anatomical model, so that she can show her people the devastating effects FGM has on the human body. That is one amazing lady.
I do appreciate the book as a whole, and how it kind of showcases beautiful women from all walks of life. It has also ensured that the Vagina warrior in me remains strong.
A beautiful photojournal!!! The images are breath taking and the women are strong, smart and courageous. It awakened the Vagina Warrior inside of me!!!!
I have been blessed to have been able to be involved with the Vagina Monologues in my area and when I saw that there was a book such as this one with Eve Ensler's essays and photographs by Joyce Tenneson, I knew that I would have to check it out.
I particularly love the photography which showcases all types of women, strong women from all over the world. Beautiful, strong women. There are essays from some of the women and interspersed are some of Eve Ensler's essays from the Vagina Monologues.
Check this book out, I don't think you will be sorry!
