Relies on a slightly outdated idea of listening instruction [the comprehension approach], but it has a lot of useful suggestions for actual teaching strategies even if some of them are commonsensical or obvious. You might want to read "Listening in the Language Classroom," by John Field, if you want to find out more about the listening process itself and some ideas for teaching aspects of it that are not mentioned here in great detail.

Easily my favorite book in the "How To" series. Smooth writing style, humorous, tightly edited, and consistently informative throughout.

Hmm. Includes references to Frank Lloyd Wright, Samuel Beckett, Diderot, Bart Simpson, etc. The humor and conversational style felt like personal 1-1 time with the author.

Introductory text includes a wealth of practical ideas backed up by theory. I can't say it's an academic deep dive on par with the bulky John Fields text; each commands its own place in a teacher's personal library and serves a purpose.

I should point out, though, that being a product stemming from 2008, the book includes a nod to learning styles/multiple intelligences and right brain/left brain activities. Advances in neurolinguistics haven't exactly supported this idea.

Nevertheless, a great read for me. The bank of activities, Notes and Further Reading, the glossary, index, and the CD are all plusses. Makes me wonder why I hadn't checked this off my list earlier.
