Lost in time, low on gas... and surrounded by dames! Ashley J. Williams, the chainsaw-wielding Chosen One, is thrown through the time stream to Prohibition Era Chicago, where he lands in the middle of the war between Eliot Ness' Untouchables and Al Capone's criminal empire. When the evil Book of the Dead falls into the hands of a would-be gangster and a Deadite Mob rears its ugly head, Ash turns in his boomstick for a badge, his chainsaw for a tommy gun! Also, with the help of the diminutive Deadite named Sam, our hero propels to the end of the world, where waits the vengeful King Montezuma, a legion of undead Nazi soldiers, and a resurrected Yakuza crimelord! Will the Chosen One survive the ravages of time, and how does the mysterious Lady Ash fit into the equation - as a heroine or a tool of the Necronomicon?
This whole story line was random and nonsensical. There's multiple versions of Ash from different dimensions and they're traveling through time. And there's an undead dwarf whose origin is never explained. And there's mobsters and a pigman. Is there such a thing as hoarding plot elements? This feels like it. This finally "wraps" up the plot of the previous volume and by wraps up, I mean resolves via a huge Deus Ex Machina which doesn't make any more sense than anything else thus far. Despite being huge, this all feels sketchy and not fleshed out. And the plot just jerks us randomly back and forth in a completely unsatisfying way. I'd been reading by way through the Army of Darkness bundle I'd bought and after this one, I needed a break so I went and read something else for a while.
The art was well done, but not enough to make up for the poor plot.
What a pile! I applaud them for attempting something new but holy mess. Some much happening for absolutely nothing to happen. So convoluted and stupid. Multiple ashes in multiple times, yawn.
