Realtime Web With HTML5 WebSocket, PHP, and jQuery is a guide for beginner- to intermediate-level web developers looking to take the next leap forward in website and app realtime.
With Realtime Web Apps , you'll be able to quickly get up to speed on what HTML5 WebSocket does, how it is going to affect the future of the web as we know it, and--thanks to Pusher's simple API--start developing your first realtime app today.
Only lightly touching on the heavy theory and instead focusing on a practical approach, Realtime Web Apps will guide you through building your first app using HTML5, CSS3, jQuery, and Pusher. After your initial introduction to the technologies used in the book, you'll immediately jump into the process of creating a realtime Q&A app that will work on desktop browsers as well as mobile phones (including iOS and Android).
In addition to learning realtime development strategies, you'll also learn progressive development strategies including responsive CSS3 layouts, AJAX development with jQuery, and more.
The future of the web is realtime. Grab your hoverboard. What you'll learn Who this book is for Realtime Web With HTML5 WebSocket, PHP, and jQuery is for the beginning- to intermediate-level web developer who is ready to usher in the next era of web apps. It's for those whose time is precious, but have a need to implement realtime functionality into their projects. Realtime Web Apps is written for--and by--geeks who love to expand their skillset but don't have weeks to dedicate to learning how to implement new technology. It's the perfect tool for busy web professionals who need to get up to speed with the latest the web has to offer quickly and in such a way that it's immediately applicable to their projects.
It was an informative book, I brushed up my knowledge of JS, JQ, CSS, OAuth, and PHP, which are elements of a Realtime web app, however only the last about 10 pages is focused on the websockets by pusher that are used in making the web apps work in real time. The whole book follows one example project, thus you only see these elements through their example, and examples are better than just information, but combining the information with examples would be the best strategy. I did learn from it though, so it does have merit, it just doesn't solely focus on the realtime elements very much.
Very little time is spent going over realtime Web technologies. Too much of the book is spent going over basic PHP, jQuery, and responsive design. If you want a comprehensive overview of the realtime Web this is not the book. If you don't mind learning about object-oriented PHP, responsive design, Photoshop, and jQuery then it may provide some value after all.
