Over 200 all-new crochet stitches, embellishments and trims make this the one-stop shop for all creative crocheters. Every stitch is shown as a clear swatch to show the effect and texture, and the pattern is given both written and as an easy-to-follow diagram. Conveniently grouped crochet motifs, stitches and edgings allow for easy browsing and location of favorites. Teaches crafters how to make the best of the textural, 3D nature of crochet - perfect when fabrics and knitting just don't cut it!
First of all, the book is a collection of patterns for flowers, leaves, trims, and stitches that can be added here and there to make everything look pretty, the best thing being that it gives you ideas on how to use them.
Each section in the book is colour coded for easy finding. It contains a very useful intro covering the basic stitched, yarn weights and textures, pattern reading, and generally useful ideas and information to stimulate crochet creativity. Despite this I would not really recommend it to the absolute beginners, I believe that a basic knowledge of pattern-reading can go a long way here and make it more enjoyable.
The patterns are really easy to read, each of them consists of a colourful picture (it seems silly, but when you look at different rows the fact that each row is a different colour makes the pattern more clear), written instructions and a graph (before reading this book I found graphs to possibly be the scariest thing about crochet, but they make the patterns so much more clear it's unbelievable). These three things together make it virtually impossible to make the pattern wrong because you have so many ways of checking and rechecking it. I of course managed to wrong a couple of times, but I know it's my own fault for not liking to follow instructions: I'm a rebel you see.
Over all I can't find any major fault with this book, but if I really wanted to I could say that it should have contained more patterns for the simple reason that they are so beautifully written that you get fantastic ideas on how to use them just by looking at the pictures -cough, cough, yarnbombing, cough. All I can say, really, is go buy it NOW!
I picked this book up to use it to make an "Advent Calendar Scarf". The patterns for the flowers, trims, motifs and stitches are charted and given written directions. Each is also pictured in color examples. Scattered throughout, there are examples given for how the different things might be used in a completed object. Overall, very well done.
This is more of a 3.5 for me but I'm rounding up as I think its a valuable resource for crocheters with less experience.
I found this book to be most valuable for its trims section. There are many books that show flowers but not as many that show trims.
The flowers were about the different essential forms used to make flowers. Not many were intended to be representative of real flowers but give you the basics which are used everywhere (ie afghans, baby outfits) as flower elements.
Another plus that unfortunately contains a con: I liked the section on crochet fabric. It's not nearly as extensive as another book I have but in some ways gives a clearer look at a couple versions. The con however, most of the swatches were done with a contrasting row thru the middle. Its a nice and useful idea but I would have preferred the contrast be near bottom of swatch so there would be enough solid color rows to see how it looked there. In my opinion, its much more likely that people will use solid colors or do a different two tone variation that looks a lot different.
In summary, this is a useful collection of basic forms of the different types in one book. Which is handy when you are building your library and/or don't want to be hauling around a bunch of advanced or more detailed specialized stitch/pattern libraries.
FYI, the "fabric" book I referred to is Harmony Guides 300 Crochet Stitches vol 6.
One of the few crochet books that is very easy to follow. The author has added very good images and instructions on the crochet stitches at the front of the book as well. The book is not for beginners but certainly for those who know basic crocheting. The book is bursting with great ideas that are fast to create.
There’s a lot of great projects in here, but some of the flowers weren’t exactly what I expected. Why I gave it three stars is mostly with the annoyance of too many of the pictures placed on the wrong page. (Something they can fix with proper spacing). For example, the image was of a scarf, but the page was talking about something else and the next page would have that items picture instead of what it was talking about. Many, many pages… too many like that that at first it was confusing and then became annoying when it started showing some flowers and some pictures were correct and some were for the next project, and well we shouldn’t have to guess. If they fix the spacing issue and double check it, then I would give it more of a 4-star.
Nothing groundbreaking here but nice photography on the individual flowers and trims. The projects are a bit cringey (some ironing would help!) but you get the idea... This would be a great book for a beginner as the introductory info and tools and equipment stuff is well illustrated with lots of graphics and sidebars.
This was a lot of fun, and I enjoyed all the patterns I tried from it. Admittedly, the instructions on when to switch colors were nonexistent at times, but otherwise, the patterns were clear, both in the charts and the written instructions. There was a large variety, from motifs to trims and even a few little leaves.
Pretty decent book with written patterns and charts for flower appliqués. Used a few in a project. Glad it was available to borrow from library. Wouldn't buy, but handy when I needed help.
I wanted this book to add to my flower patterns. I don't need trim very often, and don't have many patterns for it so thought it might be nice to have more. It does have some interesting flower patterns I'm looking forward to trying including a flower with a trumpet and a different approach to roses and daisies. Among the trims, I really like the daisy chain, and some others are making me wonder what trim projects I might be able to come up with. I was disappointed to find that even though the book states it contains patterns for "200 Flowers, Embellishments & Trims" 50 of the patterns are actually for fabrics, which I have no interest in. This is such a large proportion that I reduced my rating by one star because of it.
I think this is a good book if you are comfortable creating your own projects and are looking for some patterns for fabrics, motifs, and trims. If you are looking primarily for flowers and motifs (and don't already have it), I would recommend the Harmony Guides book Crochet Stitch Motifs instead.
Alot of the trims & borders can be found in another book of hers called The crochet & knit bible. However the flowers are not so that was very nice. This is going to be my go to book all winter I have a feeling
A lot of books teach crocheted flowers and other motifs, but what I love about this book is the section of crocheted trim. It provides a great selection that you could easily create more patterns from, to adorn the edges of blankets or add embellishments to clothes and other fabrics.
I want to own this book! Awesome projects. You can never have too many embellishments. Great little projects for beginner crocheters. I just want to sit and make flowers all day. My first batch went to a group who knit cancer patients' hats! Beautiful book.
This book helped a lot in my accessories work... some of the language is a little hard to follow but other then that I like it. I think it works great for people who can crochet with floss!
