Hendrik Magdalenus Bruna was een Nederlandse grafisch vormgever, tekenaar en schrijver van kinderboeken. Hij werd wereldberoemd met zijn kinderboekjes over nijntje.
Revisited today on hearing the sad news of Dick Bruna's death.
Beautiful, design conscious illustration. We love the simplicity, the carefully chosen shape, colour and text. If I see the colours navy, orangey red, yellow and green I instantly think of Miffy. We love the way Miffy has evolved and refined over the years, although I do prefer the earlier Miffy incarnations with slightly longer, pointed ears.
If you are ever in Amsterdam the Miffy museum is definitely worth a visit.
From Arthur Rimbaud's A Season in Hell: "And I dread winter because it is the season of comfort! / Sometimes in the sky I see endless beaches covered / with white nations full of joy." Arthur would've hated Miffy. She is the provider of comfort.
My heart softened as Miffy built the house for the crying bird, and also Miffy showing absolute empathy as she too cried with the bird. But she didn't only weep, she built it a home. Miffy knows how to play, and how to help. And she is extremely responsible; never complaining when having to go to bed. I know I was not that way at her age.
It's so odd being home or visiting earlier places where I've lived. People would tell me about how crazy I was as a kid, and the many irresponsible and dangerous and often very rude things I'd done. And it's like they're telling me about someone else. Someone not me. Not only do I not remember these memories, but even thinking about doing what I'd done as a kid feels so disconnected with the way I think and act. It's as if I've lived two lives. But as I continue learning and growing, it would be more accurate to say that I've lived thousands of lives--constantly changing.
This was my first every favourite book! I used to take it everywhere with me, in the way that most young children carry a teddy bear or blanket with them! I even used to sleep with it under my pillow every night. I still have my original copy as it holds such nostalgic memories for me. I'd recommend the Miffy books to anyone who has young children, they're wonderful picture books.
