Clarence Crane Brinton (February 25, 1898 – September 7, 1968) was an American historian of France, as well as a historian of ideas. His most famous work, The Anatomy of Revolution (1938) likened the dynamics of revolutionary movements to the progress of fever.
When I was in college I was assigned to read “A History of Civilization, Volume One, Prehistory to 1715.” I have reviewed that book for Good Reads. You can find the review here: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/9...
Much of what I had to say about Volume One is also true of Volume Two.
Volume Two is more interesting to me because it is more recent, and consequently more relevant to current issues and problems. Volume Two was published in 1975, so there cannot be any mention of events after that date.
Chapter 27, “The Rise of Fascism, 1918 – 1939” was interesting because of the similarities between the rise of Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler on one hand, and Donald Trump on the other.
Trump is too old and too stupid to be as dangerous as Mussolini and Hitler. Many Americans who agree with Trump on one or more issues are embarrassed by him.
Nevertheless, a young, brilliant man with Trump’s programs could be dangerous in the future if he combines the eloquence of John Kennedy, with the charm of Kennedy and Ronald Reagan.
