Nearly everyone has heard about the little piggy that went to the market and the one that stayed home-but there's a lot more to the story! 20 Hungry Piggies completes the tale while, unbeknownst to the reader, teaching an important math concept at the same time. There are many counting books that deal with cardinal numbers (1,2,3,etc), but this book teaches ordinal numbers as well-an important part of the kindergarten math curriculum. As an added bonus, children will have a great time trying to find the hidden wolf and hidden numbers in each spread.

A counting book that uses the ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.).
It goes 1st through 20th.
On each page, you have the word (third) and the piggy is labeled with the corresponding cardinal number (3).
It starts like the nursery rhyme (like "This little piggy went to market....") and gets to something almost like the 3 Little Pigs before the pigs triumph.
My 3yo loved this book. It was a rhyme so it read aloud easily. It featured ordinal and cardinal numbers in a fun way. The big bad wolf is hidden on each spread as well a the cardinal number for each piggy. My 5, 7, and 9 yo found the search and find element of the book entertaining. All in all a book that stretched a few ages, taught them something and made them giggle.
A mix between This Little Piggie and The Three Little Pigs, this is super cute. All the different jobs the pigs complete have a purpose and are helpful. The way they get the wolf is just perfect.
Jill really enjoyed this book. She liked looking for the numbers on each page (they were incorporated in the pigs' clothing in different ways) and for the wolf (he, part of him, or his shadow was on each page). It was an interesting way to introduce the other kind of number. (I'm sure it has a title, but I can't remember it. So, this novel had first, second, third, fourth, fifth, etc. instead of one, two, three, four, five, etc.) Ordinal numbers? The regular ones are called cardinal numbers, I think. Anyway, Jill enjoyed this story a lot. The poor wolf becomes a vegetarian at the end. The author did a really cute job of turning the "first little piggie went to the market" rhyme into a full story.
I really enjoyed reading 20 Hungry Piggies. I thought it was a fun, enjoyable book that also taught counting. I thought it was interesting that it played on the five little piggies. The illustrations are beautiful. I thought it was clever of the illustrator Andrew N. Harris to hide numbers on the pages. It turns the book into a fun hide and seek game. I had a unique and wonderful opportunity of being taught by the author Trudy Harris this semester at BYU-Idaho. She taught Children's Literature, and her son came and taught one day. We got to talk with him about being an illustrator and he told us about this book. I think this is a book that an child who is learning to count should have. It would make it fun and enjoyable.
What a great continuation of "5 Little Piggies". It's such a great way to teach children how to count, especially with a rhyme. Things are a lot easier to learn when you have a rhyme to go with them. The only thing that bothered me about the book was the wolf talking about eating them, maybe that went a little too far, having them line up to be eaten and everything. But overall it was a really great book. I loved the style and the hidden wolf in every picture!
A lot going on here but it works. There's the "this little piggie" rhyme expanded to 20 pigs, with pretty good rhymes. There's the Big Bad Wolf hiding in each spread. There's a number matching the number on each pig's shirt to look for on each page as well. And there's a story, with a scary moment or two from the wolf and a happy ending all around. Fun for older pre-schoolers.
Thought this was a cute, funny book. Clever numbers book with a fun twist on the pigs and the wolf. Especially liked the last page with the wolf reading a book about being a vegetartian, with the veggies sitting next to him. Was amused to see that it was written by BYU graduate, which is where I attended college.
Good book for teaching the numbers and math. Read it for the structure in writing math concept picture books. Liked the story and that the author is a classroom teacher as I am. Math concept story and pictures by her son.
This book was really cute and I thought it had a fun idea, as well as great illustrations. It would be fun to read with a kid and help them see and recognize the numbers on each pig and see if they notice the uninvited guest watching the pigs get ready for their meal. Cute, fun, and interactive.
