The book opens with a mystery man talking to his friend Ruth. Ruth who's about to marry Tim, now that everything's over, and the danger has passed. It's all shrouded in mystery. The same man also mentions Annie and a son he's yet to meet. And nine years that he's sacrificed, in order for the danger to pass.

Tim is a policeman and Ruth will be moving in with him. She worked as a researcher for Michael, the bestselling writer, the same Michael who's Annie's landlord and whom she's yet to meet. In the past decade, many things have changed for Annie. She's had her son, eight-year-old Stephen, to keep her busy. The son she had with a charming French guy, Etienne Duprés, who's long dead. Annie runs a coffee shop, and is waiting for meeting Michael Harding, and hoping that now when he's back for refurbishing the building where she lives in rent, he doesn't throw her out.

There is a flashback then, as Annie Shaw reminisces her time at the vineyard where she met Etienne for the first time, an estate manager. This flashback is triggered when she sees on the news about the death of the owner while resisting arrest after years of international police at his tail, for slave labour and human trafficking. She couldn't believe that conditions there were that bad. She worked as a cook there at that time, for the permanent staff. One fine day, when their relationship was in the initial few days, she recieved news of his death and wasn't allowed to even say one final goodbye to him. So she returned to the only home she knew, Roger and Liz Miller's, the latter her former lecturer in college.

Michael Harding visits his godparents, and is enthusiastically welcomed by their dog, Nipper. At first they didn't recognise him, but then welcomed him with open arms and a heart full of joy. He had his face changed due to plastic surgery and his godmother just knew that he wasn't dead, when they received that terrible news nine years ago.

Just like Mills and Boon Suspense! So much mystery surrounding one man. No surprises there, when Annie is attracted to Michael on their very first meet. A second chance romance spanning ten years, from France to England. A thirty-eight year old Michael reminds her time and time again of Etienne. And it doesn't help matters when he's always around refurbishing the building. The story is so detailed, with lots of characters though it never overcrowds. It was amusing to read, and funny, when the thirty-year-old Annie got all territorial over Michael, not that she could express it, especially with the other regulars watching.

There's quite many interest things, his secret life, her ex. Though the reunion of father and son was very emotional, without anyone knowing any better, except Michael. There is a lot of flirty, teasing banter. I'm very curious, is Michael English or French? But his identity is kept a mystery till the very end. Meanwhile, the easy camaraderie between Michael, Annie, and their son, Stephen is heartwarming. A very dependable story of second chances. The title is perfect, nine years of waiting. Oh man! And a dramatic yet fitting end, neither too late, nor too soon.

Oof, there is so much sadness. But more than that, ugliness that is there in the world.

P.S. My first read by Caroline Anderson and a five starrer. This was a totally different one!

Nothing more fun than an old lover coming back after facial reconstruction to hook back up with his baby mama, unbeknownst to her of course. Fairly well done. There were times when I wish things had been explained a little better. Like how could they basically live in the same village within sight of each other for 9 years and she'd never seen him? I also would have liked to know if he had other relationships during that time. A big deal was made of her only having slept with him and being celibate all that time. What about him? Also I thought her reaction to his return was a little extreme. Still pretty fun if you like this trope.

Good read. Liked that we don't find out Michael's full story until the end. Kept me wanting to know his secret the whole time.

4 Stars! ~ After nine years of letting Annie believe the man she loved and the father of her son was dead, Michael knew he’d have to tread very carefully. The reconstruction surgery he’d undergone all those years ago, made him unrecognizable as the man he’d been. But now it’s safe for him to give up his false identity, and he wants Annie and his son, Stephen. Thinking it for the best to continue to hide his true identity, he slowly weaves himself in to their lives, hoping that when the time is right for him to reveal his deception she’ll forgive him. Annie’s thoughts have turned to Etienne, the father of her son, more and more, and Michael reminds her of him. She’s confused by the instant connection she feels towards Michael and how quickly she finds herself falling in love with him.

This one is part of the Heart to Heart theme, and it fits that perfectly, as this story does pull at the heart. Michael has loved Annie from the moment he’d met her and through all the years he couldn’t tell her he was alive. It’s fear that she’ll reject the man he’s become, which keeps him quiet to his identity. Annie’s confused why Michael wants her, she’s nothing special, but she can’t help the growing feelings she has for him. Ms. Anderson gives us a wonderful story of love lost and found again.

There's something about Anderson's style that's just comforting. Even in a novel rife with overdramatic potential, the focus on the ordinary world of Annie remains. I'm always impressed by how real her characters feel even in extraordinary circumstances.

This was well written but the overall premise stretched my credibility to breaking point hence the lower star rating.
