Herbert is a baby polar bear with an aversion to anything cold--including water, ice, and fish--an aversion he has to overcome when dinnertime arrives and neither the Eskimos nor the penguins have any food to spare for him
While this book is cute, giving a polar bear family human-like attributes (for instance when the mother polar bear cries into her handkerchief over her son's unwillingness to try swimming), it lost me about 1/3 of the way through, when the young cub politely asks some penguins, who would never encounter a polar bear in the wild, for the fish they are carrying. I am all for ridiculousness in picture books, but an author who is trying to convey some level of realism should research their subjects better. The illustrations are adorable, if not a bit disconcerting - the lines flow loosely, with an impressionistic flair. I cannot recommend this book for educational purposes, only for if you simply want to read a cute book about polar bears.

A very entertaining book for younger students. The humor of the polar bear fishing with a fishing pole would crack the young students up! A good book for urging students to try new things! You never know what you may like until you try it!
