This joyful anthology celebrates the words, the rhymes, and the inspiration that create poetry. Included are poems by Eleanor Farjeon, Karla Kuskin, Eve Merriam, Lilian Moore, Jack Prelutsky, Nikki Giovanni, and others. With verse selected by Bobbye S. Goldstein and illustrated by Jane Breskin Zalben, this unique collection explores the wonder of poetry through poetry itself.
Found this at a book sale; it has such beautiful illustrations. The only poem that I really liked though was “Days.”
“Some days my thoughts are just cocoons - all cold and dull and blind, They hang from dripping branches in the grey woods of my mind; And other days they drift and shine - such free and flying things! I find the gold dust in my hair, left by their brushing wings.”
This is an anthology of poems--written by different authors--all about poems. I bought this thin little book for my classroom collection back in 1992. I kind of liked the irony of reading students poems about poetry. The poems are written by well-known authors such as Nikki Giovanni, Eleanor Farjeon, X.J. Kennedy, and Jack Prelutsky, for examples. The anthology was compiled by Bobbye S. Goldstein, and I think she has a meaningful and varied collection in this book.
I recommend it for students third grade and up. --Barb
