The Power of Weakness

No one likes to feel weak. Just thinking about our inadequate resources can fill us with fear and hopelessness. But Rose Marie Miller has a different perspective. For her true weakness is a giftborn out of a deep sense of need, it drives us to Christ and unleashes all the redeeming energy of God’s grace in our lives and others. Rose Marie Miller, a living example of God’s power in weakness, weaves together biblical insights and personal experience and shares a new, gospel-driven way of living where the way up is down, the weak become strong, and the dead receive life. God, for whom nothing is impossible, uses weak people to change the world—and that includes you!

I read this book several years ago and thought it was very good, so I decided to re-read it. Her teaching is timeless and yet particularly helpful in this time of uncertainty and unrest. I strongly recommend this book for you to read!!

It’s rare that I read a book and am left struck by how honest, transparent and real the author is not only about their own struggles in life, but also about the struggle every single one of us faces as we walk by the grace of God empowered by the Holy Spirit in order to shine as bright lights for Jesus in a sin stricken world. This is precisely why reading Nothing Is Impossible Reflections on Weaknesses, Faith and Power by Rose Marie Miller will prove to be an exercise in learning to be honest and transparent about where they are in their Christian lives.

Rose writes not as an “expert” but rather as one who has walked grounded in God’s Word and the Gospel for many years. In other words, Rose writes as one whose “been there and done that” but doesn’t come across as a know it all but rather as a guide—one who gently, but firmly leads us closer to the everlasting springs of true joy found only in Jesus Christ. At the heart of Rose’s book is the statement, “Nothing is impossible with God” a phrase Rose heard but for a “long time didn’t seem true for me. For much of the time I kept God at a distance, building walls of self-protection and self-reliance. I said I was a Christian but my life said, “I can manage without God.” When crisses came, the walls went higher” (16).

In just a few short words Rose just described my teenager years; a time in my life where there was a lot of change and crisis as my parents got divorced, I got addicted to pornography and lived a double life based on performing good Christian deeds in the Church while being addicted to porn and being seriously broken by my parent's divorce. Playing the appearances game and basing my life on my performance for God, I learned wasn't what biblical Christianity was about. As I continue to grow in the Gospel today, I realize now that I was living a double life and playing the hypocrite by not truly enjoying the grace of God but giving the appearance I was. Thankfully now I am much more grounded in the Word of God and daily growing in my understanding of the Word and the Gospel of Christ. In my teenage years my “walls went higher” as Rose mentioned in the above quote even as my understanding of the Word continued to grow through reading the Bible, books and hearing sermons. Sadly though the disconnect between all of this lead to burning out for the first time which helped me to realize that God was not distant, and I needed to truly and humbly trust Him.

As God continued to work on me He broke down my barriers by exposing my self-reliance and self-righteousness. Rose mentions that, “When God began to unlock the garden of my heart, he invited me to join in his mission to make this broken world an inheritance for his son. His assignments haven’t been easy, but I love and trust my Gardener and I am filled with joy to partner with Him. He truly is the God of the impossible” (19). As we take what we may understand of God from what we read in His Word in addition to what we read in books and apply it to our lives; we begin to understand that to live a disconnected and disjointed Christianity is really no kind of Christianity at all, but rather a cheap substitute. As Rose mentioned "when God unlocks the garden of your heart He breaks down the walls of self-righteous and self-reliance in order to show His sufficient, splendor and majesty." When He does this it is very painful, but also very necessary as He is the lover our souls truly need, and the very foundation of our lives. When we replace Him with idols that we bow down and worship above Him; He disciplines us to awaken our hearts to His everlasting and unchanging love. He does this to mature and nurture us in His grace for His glory.

What makes Nothing Impossible with God such an important book is Rose’s transparency but not the transparency about her story (which she has) but rather the way she is transparent. Many people focus on what they have done in their testimonies but rather than doing this Rose boasts in the Cross while emphasizing that Jesus is the source of her joy and her true hearts delight and treasure. I recommend Nothing Impossible with God to know what the fragrance of a lifetime spent saturated by study of the Word and drinking from the well of the Gospel. This book will minister greatly to the broken and those who struggle with the idea that God is far from them in the midst of their struggles. It is for this reason I sincerely pray that the Lord Jesus uses this book to minister to the broken and open the eyes of the blind to the beauty, and splendor of our great God and King Jesus Christ.

Back in the early 2000’s, I was so blessed to read “From Fear to Freedom” by Rose Marie Miller. She shared her personal journey of coming to really “get” the gospel, as I was walking through some of the same things. Her writing deeply impacted my own walk with Christ. So… when I heard she had a new book called “Nothing Is Impossible with God,” I was eager to read it!

In “Nothing Is Impossible,” Miller shares her continuing story, including the death of her husband, processing the shock and grief of widowhood, and finding her own place in ministry without her husband.

I really feel the strength in Miller’s writing is her frankness and transparency. Even as a pastor’s wife and missionary, she is not shy about sharing the deep struggles of her failure to love, or her lack of resting in the Lord. As she opens her heart to her readers, she touches somewhere deep in each of our struggles too. And we want to follow the paths of growth where God has led her.

This book is a compilation of several writings and seminars that Miller has prepared over the years. In this sense, not all the chapters hang together in a unified whole, but all in all, this book is definitely a keeper!

Title: NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH GOD
Author: Rose Marie Miller
Publisher: New Growth Press
October 2012
ISBN: 978-1936768684
Genre: Christian living

Everyone has heard that “Nothing is impossible with God.” It’s one of those Christian-ese statements that believers say to encourage one another, or when they don’t know what else to say. But does it seem true to you? Do you really believe it? For a long time, Rose Marie Miller didn’t. Even though her husband was a pastor and taught in a seminary, Ms. Miller kept God at a distance. She worked hard to build walls of self-protection and self-reliance. But then God totally transformed her heart.

NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH GOD is a collection of Ms. Miller’s personal stories of how God nurtured and matured her. It includes personal meditations, journal entries, talks and Bible studies that she’d written over the years.

If you are struggling to believe that simple statement that NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH GOD, then you’ll want to read this book. It might help to restore your faith in the God of the universe, the God of all creation.

The book is written in a conversational style, as if Ms. Miller is sitting across the kitchen table, having a casual conversation. It is easy to be drawn in as Ms. Miller shares details of her own personal life, the pain she experienced from some situations, the confusion, and the heartache. It is also easy to see where God reached out to touch her, to show her some important truth.

If you need encouragement in this area, then NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH GOD is a book you might consider. It will encourage and uplift. $15.88. 272 pages.

A good book. Rose Marie talks about her life and ways that God has taught her to depend on him in all circumstances. I think most of the material comes from her speaking engagements or other things that she has written. Some chapters she clearly identifies as coming from a talk or series of talks she gave at some point. She refers to a number of life events several times in the book. This makes it a little confusing ("wait, didn't she already talk about this?") but doesn't detract from the overall value of it.

Content warrants a 4, but the composition I'd rate a 2. If you've heard or read Rose Marie before you pretty much know what you're going to get in this book, but that doesn't mean it's not worth the read. Rose Marie bravely shares how God has used pain and weakness in her life to make her strong in the Lord. Reading her is receiving wisdom from an older woman which is desperatly needed.

It has been an interesting read. I think the problem I find with this book is that it is a mixture of a topical book and memoir. But in in fact it is neither special at both. I begun reading it thinking it was a memoir. As a teaching book it is not sufficient - and more for women. And as a memoir it is disjointed. It has good quotes in there though, hence my 3 rather than 2 stars.

Challenging

My only issue is in the chapter on Hannah the pages are out of order. Made it very confusing to read. I did learn a lot and my heart was stirred by the realization of how often I act like an orphan instead of a daughter of God. I'll read this again.

Really enjoyed this book. She was real and shared the pain of being a widow but that God is enough. She has worked in so many areas of the world with a real desire for prayer to be a part of that ministry. So encouraging.

Rose Marie's honest words always touch my heart. I love how she connects the gospel directly with life (and what a life she is living!). As a compilation of her writings and speeches, the chapters were a bit repetitive of each other, but it certainly helped reinforce the truths.

I LOVED her honesty and transparency. It was refreshing, convicting, and encouraging. It reads like you're having coffee with an older woman in the faith. Wonderful book.

A bit repetitive, but a solid book of a life with doubts, sin, fear and suffering and how she worked out her faith through prayer, friendships and God's word.
