About the author

Tove Jansson was born and died in Helsinki, Finland. As a Finnish citizen whose mother tongue was Swedish, she was part of the Swedish-speaking Finns minority. Thus, all her books were originally written in Swedish.

Although known first and foremost as an author, Tove Jansson considered her careers as author and painter to be of equal importance.

Tove Jansson wrote and illustrated her first Moomin book, The Moomins and the Great Flood (1945), during World War II. She said later that the war had depressed her, and she had wanted to write something naive and innocent. Besides the Moomin novels and short stories, Tove Jansson also wrote and illustrated four original and highly popular picture books.

Jansson's Moomin books have been translated into 33 languages.

Essentially this is a children's book and not quite up to the standard of the Moomintroll books written for both children and adults. Still, Tove Jansson's Moomworld is an interesting place, and I kind of have a thing for the Snork Maiden.

Ei ollut niin iso hitti kuin muut tämän sarjan Muumit. On tässä jotain viehätystäkin, mutta yllättävän vähän jännitystä siihen nähden että kirjassa haaksirikkoudutaan saarelle. Niiskuneiti on aluksi mustasukkainen Muumipeikon uudesta ystävästä, mikä oli vähän turha juonenkäänne. Can’t go wrong with the moomins

Now that listening to “The Summer Book” is a summer tradition, I’ve started to explore more by the late Tove Jansson.

I listened to the audiobook. Moominworld was a good change of pace from CCPLM book groups’ reads (Civil War, WWII).

What an adorable book!

Reminded me of a childhood favorite, The Goops.

Sniff and Moomin find a message in a bottl, and they go on a little adventure to find whoever wrote the note. The New Friend. Snorkmaiden seems to get a bit jealous, but Moomin says he'll never forget her ever!
