Practical, concise and easy to read, Teaching Singing to Children and Young Adults is a hands on guide to vocal pedagogy. It explains the abilities and limitations of young singers through the various stages of their lives, outlines appropriate technique - including approaches suitable for different musical styles, adolescence and gender - and provides anatomical descriptions and sample exercises throughout. Packed with illustrative case studies and illuminated with original artwork, the book also addresses topics such as the teaching of children with special educational needs, vocal health, and the structuring of lessons, warm-ups and individual practice times. Separately available is a companion DVD that perfectly illuminates the singing exercises in the book.
This is an excellent resource for people teaching children and teens to sing either privately, in choirs or in schools. It can be helpful for people already teaching for updated information on the voice or fresh idea, etc, but it is also good as an introduction to teaching kids how to sing. Because this is the second edition of a book not primarily read by people who write GR reviews, there aren't many here, but there are two on the first edition book page (both short). This was one of several books recommended to me by a vocalist who teaches voice to college students who I knew wouldn't steer me astray (yes, he's actually read it).
This book is so helpful and informative. It covers so many topics that I didn’t expect it to and it was academic but easy to read. This is such an amazing tool for voice teachers and I heartily recommend it.
Highly recommend for voice teachers of all experience levels!
Jenevora Williams writes concisely and, unlike many vocal technique books that are too academic and not "real world" enough, all her techniques and information can be immediately applicable.
A very practical and accessible pedagogical resource that deals specifically with the challenges and rewards of equipping young people with the skill of singing well.
