Operating on a tip from a co-worker I began each math lesson with a 50 problem "mad minute" followed by 10 of these mental math problems. I asked the question only once so it reinforced listening skills as well as providing a valuable opportunity for students to practice math skills on their feet (or rather, in their seats.)
