Sometimes you don't need details . . . you just want highlights and photos. DK Publishing for Children has many excellent titles; this one (with 64 pages) is a great place to begin with learning about a new topic (and India is new for me, I need geography, basic facts, etc.).
I am guessing this is aimed at upper elementary & middle schoolers but the text, especially the extensive photo captions, did not seem elementary to me.
This April I took an armchair trip to India. I stocked up on all the youth nonfiction books my Library had about India, and they were so helpful to get an introduction to the country. I especially love this publisher with the vibrant pictures and descriptions. This is a great introduction to the people and traditions of India. I learned a lot about the history, mythology, and how India gained its independence. It was also interesting to get enough close look at the Taj Mahal and learn a little more about why and how it was built. I learned that India is a very diverse country.
