I read the older edition of this (it has a brown cover) and I really liked it. It's almost like a mini bible of everything related to art. Early chapters give a basic idea of how to appreciate visual art and later on it gives a rather broader idea of not only how to appreciate but also how to sharpen your tools in art criticism and aesthetic judgement.

The book contains three sections: Appreciating the Visual Art, The Elements of Art and The Principles of Design. It also gives a broader understanding to the different movement in Art and the reasons for those developments and finally taught me the difference between post-impressionism and surrealism.

The book also analyse and teach how to analyse art work using some famous works such as Andrew Wyeth's Christina's world, Jacob Lawrence's Cabinet Maker, van Gogh's The Starry Night etc. So this is a highly valuable book for student, teachers or to anyone who love art and this will develop the understanding of art.
