A book to help readers appreciate nature and consider the fundamentals of life. By learning and thinking about the life cycle of a variety of animals on earth, children begin to see our planet and it's creatures as one and develop a personal connection to it. Beginning with "A lifetime for a mayfly is about one day," it presents 24 "lifetimes" such as that of an earthworm (about six years), a giant sequoia (about 2,000 years), a bacteria ("well, that depends"), a dinosaur ("never again") and the universe (about 15 to 20 billion years). Each example comes with detailed illustrations and something to ponder, such as, for earthworms, "Worms teach us that our work can be very important, even if it can't be seen." Each plant or animal is practically a lesson plan in itself, with "tell about it," "think about it," and "look it up" challenges. Written by a retired teacher, this is a favorite book for children and teachers alike. Perfect for anyone looking for to use as homeschool materials. that make learning fun. to help discussions of life and death.
Great book! My kids were so engaged the entire time I read this to them! We not only learned about the life spans of various living things, but also very interesting facts.....even I learned a few things! Main Idea and supporting details were the focus of our readings but we ventured off on some life lessons the animals' lives taught us and some science questions that lead to curiosity and research!
I want to say that this is one of the most beautiful inspiring books that I have ever read. It left me with a feeling that I am an important part of this world and that I can learn different lessons from the creatures around me.
"No matter how short, no matter how long,no matter how big, how smart or how strong, all life has a place, a purpose and worth. All life is important on our planet earth."
Its format is regular throughout the book. It starts with: A lifetime for a mayfly is about one day. Then it gives information about mayflies. Then it gives a statement: Mayflies teach us that a lot can be done in just one day. At the bottom of the page it gives: Tell about it, think about it, Look it up .
I love the way this information was organized. The art really evoked the environment of each organism. I also like the extras at the bottom of the page that give the reader more to think about or research.
This is a great book about the life spans of different organisms (mostly animals). Each page tells the life span, a bit about the animal or other organism, as well as a life lesson that animal teaches us. Along the bottom of the pages are little questions that encourage the reader to think.
