I had a lot of problems with the Lacey Shawl until I discovered that there are mistakes in the pattern - very frustrating. Also I halved the dimensions as it was absolutely HUGE.
The baby on the cover is very distracting. I'll be making a few patterns from this book over the next year or so, I'm sure, and I'm now starting on a cute Striped Romper Suit. I also like the Scandanavian Jacket and Hat, though that only has one sizing option. There's even a cute bunny family that I might revisit one day. The problem I recognize first thing is that the materials listed are not specific enough... or perhaps too specific. The patterns call for X(Y, Z) balls of a certain very specific yarn in a certain color, and that's all the information that's given. No yarn weight (so you have to decipher the gauge), no listing of what kind of fiber is in that particular yarn, no listing of the yardage needed. Thus, unless you happen to have the specific yarn called for in the pattern handy, it's very tough to determine how to substitute. This is especially a problem for something like the Scandanavian Hat and Sweater, which calls for a yarn which is now discontinued. A little more information is really just essential, evne in the internet age. We'll see how the patterns knit up for the final verdict on this book.
