This book of biographical criticism was a rare find - one of those extraordinary works of secondary endeavour that explain their subject with reverence, tenderness, and respect. If anyone struggles with Carlyle, and finds him obnoxious or rude, read Le Quesne. He will contextualise and explain those troubles away. I would recommend it to anyone. It's not too long either, so you don't need to toil through Froude's four volumes to grapple with the life of this momentous literary figure.
