WHAT IN HEAVEN IS THIS?!
If you are still wondering what this book is, well, as I commented above, this isn’t a manga, this isn’t a graphic novel, but actually a prose novel, with some illustrations yes, but quite few of them, since it’s a prose novel.
Oh! And it’s an original story! (Not found in the manga or anime series)
And if you haven’t a clue of what Oh My Goddess! is, well, in brief, it’s a Japanese franchise following the adventures of Keiichi Morisato, a Japanese college student, who was granted the wish of having a goddess just like Belldandy at his side for the rest of his life.

OH MY RESET!
This is a very special story since while isn’t written by Kosuke Fujishima (franchise creator), it’s written by Yumi Tohma, who is the seiyu (voice actress) that gives her voice to the character of “Urd”, older sister of “Belldandy”, but don’t get mistaken thinking that she would focused on Urd, oh no, she is careful to give to the three sisters an equal relevance and narrative time in the story.
Keiichi Morisato is on his “final” year in college, since due a minor technicality resulting in missing a second language credit at Nekomi Institute of Technology, now he needs to stay in college a whole extra year. His life with three goddesses is good, obviously in special with Belldandy, but he is in fair good terms with Urd & Skuld too.
However, in Heaven, the Yggdrasil system is having an unusual bug crashing, risking to be destroyed, therefore causing the obliteration of Heaven, and everything is signaling to…
…Keiichi Morisato.
Not intentional, but his quite unusual wish of having a goddess just like Belldandy with him for the rest of his life is causing (yet again) problems in the Yggdasil system, but this time is worse than ever before, even Peorth, the goddess in charge of Yggdrasil system, along the combined support of Urd & Skuld, are unable to avoid the total collapse of the system.
There is only one solution…
…to reset Yggdrasil!
The Yggdrasil system must be reset, to the very point just before Keiichi Morisato asked his unusual wish.
Belldandy, as Goddess of Present, she was loving her present time with Keiichi, she loves him to the bottom of her heart, and her very reason of being is making Keiichi smiles everyday, however when she would have to live again the past when the emergency reset is activated…
...things aren’t happening as it was supposed to be, things are happening too soon, and things are happening that they never happened before!
Belldandy never had such personal and intimate adventure, where she will be witness of past, present and even future of Keiichi Morisato’s life, forcing her to analyze if she interpreted in the proper way, the Keiichi’s wish, since the happiness of Keiichi is the most important thing for Belldandy…
…and you’ll be left to make the call of how you wish to be!
I expected this to be terrible. It was far better than I had any right to expect. Give it was written by the woman who voiced Urd in the Anime, I thought it would be centered on that character. But it wasn't. The author clearly had a great depth of knowledge of the characters and the series. She navigated a very fine line between sticking within established storylines and being inventive. A very well done job. If you love the series, you will love the book. If you are not familiar with the series, there are numerous places where the book references it in ways that will confuse you if you don't know it. So, in one sense, it is aimed at existing fans. Right now I need to look up and see if she's written any more!
Average guy, average life...then...bam! There's a goddess who says she's willing to grant you one wish! Keiichi Morisato, lucky guy huh? Belldandy, goddess first class grants Keiichi's wish, for her to stay by his side forever. It sounds romantic but it's one of those romances that don't get anywhere. Urd,(half)goddess second class and Belldandy's older sister, tries to get the romance moving. Skuld, goddess second class and youngest sister, stops it. Imagine all this occurring in a temple given to you...sounds hectic, right? Yeah, living life with three goddesses is actually interesting yet hectic and chaos sometimes! Not everything happens the way you want it to, not even for a goddess in this case! Involving a human with the heavenly part of the world caused the world to become unbalanced. Actually there's a kind of balance in actual life connecting to this piece of literature, for the world to be balanced, there is 'good' and there is 'bad.' In the case of the written piece, there are goddesses and demons that grant wishes. Having so many goddesses around one human, including the fact that demons will fight with goddesses makes the world tilt to the side a bit. Thus causing an outbreak of bugs and a tragedy. Involving Keiichi meant involving his life— that's right, in a car crash. Megumi, his younger sister had crossed the pathway of a truck and to save her life, Keiichi had given up his. Belldandy, Urd, and Skuld who could turn to nothing else, up and reset the world making it so time rewinded to a few days before Belldandy and Keiichi'd met. Problems still occur though, being the goddesses of time, they can remember everything and the world constantly tries to correct itself. The idea of being able to fix the world is quite intriguing and quite terrifying. So much knowledge and yet the world still contains mistakes even with goddesses. There is probably much more to the world than all the science discovered by those who only study the outside crack of the earth. Maybe you need only look closer to see the shining rainbow which stretches across a sunny meadow full of grace.
I think this one probably deserves 2.5 stars, but I leaned toward three on it probably due to nostalgia.
I want to preface this by saying that I absolutely love the actual manga for this series. I have always loved them, especially as the art style continued to develop and shift.
Second, I do want to say that I'm reviewing an English translation of a story initially written in Japanese. I'm hopeful not too much got lost in translation, but it is always something to take into account.
First things first, I thought the characters were very well written. I felt no disconnect from the characters in the manga at all, which is always important. I know Yumi Tohma is the Japanese voice actor for Urd and I applaud her for getting all of the characters emotionally right for the book.
This story, however, was just not that interesting to me. The plot seemed needlessly stretched out. They spent a great deal of time trying to show Belldandy and Keichii's strained relationship, but I really think they spent too much time doing so. There wasn't a single scene with Megumi where she didn't constantly egg on her brother to go for it with Belldandy in some fashion. They also spent way too much time describing details of things that, in the long run, didn't really matter at all. It was just a little too much fluff fairly consistently. It also doesn't appear that, given the plot, anything actually got fixed from the main story. It seems time is doomed to repeat itself again in the hopes that they manage to get it right this time.
I'm not sure where in the story line this book is supposed to take place either. Obviously, it's not one of the manga stories, but it's something I considered.
Overall, I think I'll just stick to the manga. I'm a little too attached to the artwork in them to prefer novelized stories about them.
Something is wrong with the Yggdrasil computer system and Peorth calls Skuld for help. A bug comes through the home phone. Meanwhile Megumi and Keiichi are on their way to school using a motocycle but, on the way there, there's an accident and Keiichi dies.
The situation with the computer system gets worse as various gods and goddesses flee heaven. It's Ragnarok, the Twilight of the Gods, as some of the goddesses and gods begin to vanish. The only way to right things is to restore the system, setting time back to just before Keiichi first met Belldandy.
It's not a complete repeat, though, since Belldandy, Urd and Skuld remember what had really happened, and have to deal with things starting all over again. They have to figure a way to keep Keiichi from becoming a 'singularity' and causing the system to crash again.
Some things turn out to be different, though. Sayoko makes her appearance, but not on a motorcycle. Belldandy also doesn't enroll at the same school as Keiichi. She's trying to avoid his getting too close to her to stop the singularity thing that happened before.
Keiichi wins a trip with Belldandy while Urd and Skuld go to back to heaven, but it turns out the same types of problems as before are starting again despite Belldandy's not getting too close to Keiichi.
The Motor Club comes up with a money-making scheme and Keiichi has to take part. Part of the scheme involves confronting a ghost that's appeared on campus and it shows up again and attacks Keiichi. Urd recognizes it as some form of demon. Things go worse quickly from that point on, as it turns out both Heaven and the Infernal Realm are threatened by what is happening.
The solution to the problem, though, could involve breaking the ties between Belldandy and Keiichi forever.
yay for this series. it started out as a manga and an anime series and then a movie and so on and so forth. then one of the voice actors goes to the creator and asks to write a companion novel. by the way...she does a great job. it holds well with the series and does it a great amount of justice. rock...roll...and then rock again...and if you have time go ahead and roll again.
This is not a comic book. :D I've been a fan of the series for the past half decade but there's no real ending in sight. (there hasn't been one for the past 20 years) The story stayed true to the characters in the comics. The story line was well thought out.
It wasn't bad. A kind of elseworlds novel. At times thought the characters came off kind of weird or cheesy. I really like the manga though so I read this too. If you like the comics you'll probably enjoy this too. It's also written by urd's voice actress.
really only read this if you've either a read the manga (I Haven't yet) or watched the anime otherwise you wont get much out of it it is a bit overly long but enjoyable if your a fan far better then the buffy books anf the like
