A solid beginners' collection of hat patterns. A few more advanced details - cables or lace or stripes - but nothing too complicated. A fairly even spread of knit and crochet patterns - rather unusual in books like this (they tend to be more one or the other).

The yarns are all Lion Brand - mostly widespread and easily available (though a few are discontinued). Which is understandable, as it's a Lion Brand book. Nicely, though, all the information on the yarns used is provided - details not always included in pattern books on the whole (suprisingly, sometimes publishers seem to think the yarn name and gauge are enough).

As for the patterns themselves, they are fairly basic. A few have some interesting details, but mostly are pretty simple, even blah. There are a few I'd make specifically, but not a lot. What I do really like is the variability of the "simple" hats at the beginning. The instructions are basically gridded, with the ability to follow the same instruction outline for a variety of sizes and yarn weights. Very handy!

There are only two hats that I would make in this hat pattern collection.
I would only buy this book if you have lots of Lion Brand yarn around that you need to use up, but otherwise the yarn gauge is easy to find and replace, but the hats are just not interesting. I bought at the same time Hats: A Knitter's Dozen which is retro and classic, this book is twenty times better even though the photos are super retro looking, but the colors are easily modified to make modern hats.
