The time has come to stand up for what’s right in America. We may be in the middle of economic recovery, but millions of Americans are not sharing the benefits. The growing ranks of those without adequate food, jobs, shelter, or health care challenge our fundamental notions of right and wrong. America Needs Human Rights makes a powerful case that both the letter and spirit of universally recognized human rights are routinely violated in America by government policies that safeguard profits rather than people. Topics includes understanding human rights, basic needs and human rights, the new American crisis, poverty in America, welfare reform and human rights, policy options, and movement building.
It is an atrocity that a book like this has to be written. Seems like not just this country but the entire world needs to remember what human rights are all about. Everything from poverty to policies, this book basically runs through the gamut of how the system isn't just broken but was never set up to work properly. Some of the states in here are astonishing & they are probably much worse than when this book was written. Some chapters are better & more informative than others but it still an eye opener. The entire section that goes through how the United Nations came about & what they've done or not done is also remarkable considering things like how the millions & millions of people who have no food, no shelter or any other basic human rights. We desperately need to do more for people as a society.
