With two other careers to her credit before becoming a novelist and four states in which she's lived for extended periods of time, Sherryl Woods has collected friends and memories, along with way too much unnecessary junk.

"The friends are the only things I've brought with me through the years that really matter," she says. "I could probably live without one more chintz teacup, another tin-litho sandpail or another snowglobe, but I need those friends."

The theme of enduring friendships and families is always central to Sherryl's books, including her latest Chesapeake Shores series — THE INN AT EAGLE POINT, FLOWERS ON MAIN and HARBOR LIGHTS.

Author of more than 100 romance and mystery novels, Sherryl Woods grew up in Virginia. Over the years she had lived in Ohio and Florida, as well as California. Currently she divides her time between Key Biscayne, Florida and Colonial Beach, Virginia, the small, river-front town where she spent her childhood summers.

A graduate of Ohio State University School of Journalism, Sherryl spent more than ten years as a journalist, most of them as a television critic for newspapers in Ohio and Florida. For several years she also coordinated a motivational program for the more than 8,000 employees at the University of Miami-Jackson Memorial Medical Center.

Her first book, RESTORING LOVE, was published in 1982 by Dell Candlelight Ecstasy under the pseudonym of Suzanne Sherrill. Her second book, SAND CASTLES, under the pseudonym of Alexandra Kirk, was published later that same year by Bantam. She began using her own name when she moved to the Second Chance at Love line at Berkley Publishing. In 1986, she began writing full-time and also began her long career at Silhouette Books with the Desire title NOT AT EIGHT, DARLING, set in the world of television which she covered for so many years.

In addition to her more than 75 romances for Silhouette Desire and Special Edition, she has written thirteen mysteries — nine in the Amanda Roberts series and four in the Molly DeWitt series.

When she's not writing or reading, Sherryl loves to garden, though she's not at her best on a riding lawn mower. She also loves tennis, theater, and ballet, even though her top spin has long since vanished, she's never set foot on a stage, and she's way too uncoordinated to dance. She also loves baseball and claims anyone who's ever seen Kevin Costner in "Bull Durham" can understand why.

Ok, listen. Objectively, is this book literarily good? No. The dialogue is stilted and the pacing differs by a lot in the beginning and the end, which threw me off.

But I gave in to the asexual experience of reading weird as descriptions of "urges" and "desires" which are so funny and always make me laugh. So I enjoyed it.

Also, kudos for the description of an abusive relationship, it was actually quite nicely done.

This contemporary romance centers on a woman who has moved from a big city to a small town to get away from something. The story is teasing holding out the revelation until the last possible point in the story, but it is not hard to figure out. Some things about it are more obvious than others.

Dana is hard to like since she is withdrawn and jumpy, pushing Nick away at every chance. Nick would be the perfect guy but he is a bit chauvinistic and way too invasive. The story should have been a non-starter since Nick should have taken many hints and done the right thing and stayed away. I can't imagine what his attraction is other than Nick having a White Knight complex. He realizes that he is dealing with something serious in Dana, but runs over her. Not that, from a broader perspective, she doesn't need to have her shell removed, but it is not Nick's right to make that choice. The author paints his motives as being mostly pure, but I think that he is lying to himself.

The tone of the story is mostly a downer. Not only does it deal with a very serious and disturbing subject, but any time there might be some optimism, it doesn't take long for Dana to crush it. Nick's son Tony could be a bridge that develops into something interesting, but mostly Tony is a secondary character.

I know I have said it, but this book deals with a very serious and disturbing topic that has wider application in society. I don't think it does that very well. I have read many other stories with variations on that theme, so I am comparing to this book to those stories as to how well the author draws in the reader to the problem.

Some of what leaves this book short is the teasing nature of the mystery. The author spends so much effort giving hints, yet holding back, that the reader doesn't get a chance to truly empathize with Dana. Something is obviously bad, but without understanding it better, the result is more frustration than empathy. Nick mirrors what the reader is feeling.

Mature themes: besides the disturbing issue there are mildly explicit sexual references and a mildly explicit sexual scene that isn't real long. That brings us to the disturbing issue. I thought that the way it was handled is at best clumsy and at worst exploitative. The issue is

This is a book about a young woman who appears to have turned her life around. She moves from a large city, where her husband was a high powered socially active professional, to a small town where she accepts a job as the town librarian. She tries to avoid making friends and makes it plain she just wants to live a very quiet, solitary life. This book is the story of why she wants to avoid discussing her past, why she tries to minimize friendships. I do not want to include spoilers, so will only say the writing is excellent and the problems she faces are present with honesty and truthfulness that brought tears to my eyes.

The past couple of years have been rocky for Dana Brantley. She has hopes of making a new start in River Glen as their new librarian.

The townspeople thinks that she is perfect for their most eligible bachelor, Nick Verone. So does Nick's ten-year-old son, Tony. Nick is attracted to and intrigued by Dana and is determined to find a way through her hesitancy. But Dana cannot escape her past. But when Nick learns why she is hesitant he will have his work cut out for him in convincing Dana to take a chance on him.

Typical tripe but fun

Not enough humour by far. Characters were stick figures. Handsome man meets abused widow. I highly recommend this book for abused women as it tested this subject frankly about being preachy.

Nice second-chance romance between a hero who had a great first marriage until his wife died, and a heroine who keeps her past mysterious, but you know it was bad. It moves gently and carefully, and is just a sweet little story. I liked it.

Nice book

I was great the way the problem was finally solved. Why do I have to rate every book? I should be able to decide it!

As with all of Woods' books, I want to read more about these characters. One character has a twist I didn't see coming. I imagined all kinds of things but the answer made perfect sense.

Love the Sherryl Woods books especially if I can get lost in book after book of a series, these people become like family in a small town and I only want the books to go on forever.

On Edge of Forever:

This was my least favorite of the two books but I still enjoyed reading about the characters. Now I'm going to spoil the story just a bit because how can I review this story without doing a bit of spoiling? Dana is incredibly secretive about her past which requires Nick to tease out bits and pieces since Dana won't share anything.

Dana is the town librarian who clearly came to town to hide from some horrible event in her past. She tries very hard to assert her independence and avoid relationships but of course the town sees her as perfect for the town bachelor, Nick Verone. Nick likes the mystery surrounding the librarian and wedges himself into her life rather forcefully. He invites himself over, enters her home, and takes on fixing things without being asked. I know it's the small town charm thing but it did seem a little too forceful for my taste.

As they begin falling in love, her secrets come out to the town and there is a movement to remove her as librarian. At the same time Nick's mother-in-law decides to fight for custody of Nick's son, Tony, due to Dana's presence. For this couple it is just one hurdle after another while they fight to be in love.

I enjoyed the book but I got hung up on Dana's secrecy as well as Nick's forcefulness. If Dana had merely explained even a tidbit of her past then maybe Nick would have understood where she was coming from. If Nick had actually listened to Dana's wishes for independence then she wouldn't have felt boxed in. I get the book needs conflict but at times it seemed a little forced.

I gave this book 3/5 stars.

Three stars not because it is a bad book but just an average one that I did enjoy. There were good characters, a mystery, a romance, and a good awareness of spousal abuse and its effect on those involved. There was also some of the "joys" of living in a small town highlighted. Sheryl Woods always hooks me early and reels me in and this book was not exception.

Well...

This one really struck a bad note with me. Most parts seemed rushed and I really never liked Nick. He came off as pushy, unable to take 'no' for an answer. It really bugged the hell out of me, especially in light of Dana's past. Tony was cute, but it wasn't enough to make me rate the book higher.

Dana Brantley is the new librarian in town. The matchmakers are saying that she and Nick Verone would be a perfect match, but first Dana must overcome her past. The book is a little slow in places, but a cute read.

This story had the outline for a great novel but the way it was written and how the characters were shaped left me feeling like I missed out on what could have been so much better. I hate saying that since I usually like what this author writes.

The book was ok. but gets off to a slow ans\d somewhat boring start in the first half. The action does pick up in the second half. It does not show the depth and maturity of Ms. Woods later writings. It is more of a typical Harlequin book.

Not her best work. The premise is seriously lacking. No grandparent is going to join custody over the issue presented in the book. The book could have taken a serious issue in our society and done it a lot more justice.

I didn't care for the basic story premise -- a romance novel where the lady is recovering from wife abuse. Too deep when I was looking for a light romance novel.
