A sweet, heart-warming, very well written story I can only recommend to romance lovers! However be warned this is a tame title, no descriptive love scenes just kissing, but the tension will make your toes curl :-)
Detailed review:
I’ll start by saying that when I read the blurb of Kissing Kendall and saw that it was Book #2 in the Maritime City series I was a bit intimidated as to whether I should hop on the train in mid-ride since I haven’t read the 1st book, Georgie on my Mind, but I’m so glad I did, so have no fears fellow readers, Kissing Kendall can very well be enjoyed on its own, and I sure did! :-D
The biggest surprise for me was that I actually enjoyed Kissing Kendall and wasn’t left unsatisfied. Lol, don’t misunderstand me, what I mean is that I usually read steamy romances, I like to know how the physical attraction develops and evolves between the hero and heroine, so when I saw Kissing Kendall was a Bliss title (Entangled Publishing’s tame, sweet romance imprint) I thought I would feel like I do with appetizers: wanting more and being grumpy that I’m left hungry. :-( So the biggest surprise for me was that Jennifer Shirk managed to make me sigh with contentment at the end of Kissing Kendall, even though the story remained sweet and very PG ;-)
I am always sceptical when it comes to widow and widower characters because I fear the author won’t find that perfect balance between having the character getting over the death of their loved one too soon and remaining in love with their lost loved one. And in Kissing Kendall I thought that Jennifer Shirk managed to strike this balance quite well (yeah to be honest there were some instances when we got glimpses that the dead husband wasn’t the ideal supportive husband, but still). I enjoyed (and not in a sadistic way but rather in admiration of Jennifer Shirk’s talent) how Kendall was still trying to get over her loss and get back on her feet. She was still grieving and feeling pretty isolated from the outside world and her friends, as if although the world and life went on, she has been paused ever since she lost her husband. I liked how realistic her struggles were and how her pain, insecurities and fears held her back. It made me accept and trust her character, it was realistic that it really took her a lot of time and many things to overcome her fears and try to take little baby steps in the right direction, that is forward.
When I was reading Kissing Kendall I was thinking how easily Kendall’s character could have turned out to be or seen as a bit boring, dull, scared and indecisive heroine, and I guess it may be the case with certain people, it just wasn’t with me. So I get that as personal taste and sympathy go you may not have clicked with Kendall. For me all those back and forths added a taste of reality and substance to how really difficult it was for Kendall to get over losing her husband and battling with her attraction and even some stronger feelings for another man. How she experienced and went through the whole palette of emotions like guilt, fear, shock, bewilderment and happiness just to name a few.
Brad was very different from the usual alpha heroes as he was the quiet “best-friend-in-love-with-the-heroine-and-suffering-in-silence” kind of hero.
"“Look, Kendall and I are just friends. That’s all. I admit I love her, but I love her as I would a…a sister.” Sister. He almost laughed out loud at that. His feelings for Kendall were nowhere near the sister zone; he knew that much. And he knew the difference between right and wrong. Wrong was arguing with Jake about Kendall the day before he died. Wrong was moving in on a friend before she was over her husband’s death—something he’d come damn close to doing the other day. Even though she had felt so good, as if she were made for him, she wasn’t his. And he needed to remember that."
He was all that is responsible and protective (hey small town police officer and big brother), considerate and reliable, he was always there for Kendall and never wanting to make her uncomfortable. At first. Because after that he decided she needed to get a little uncomfortable to realize how good he could be for her ;-)
"He reached up and cupped her chin, unable to resist running his thumb gently along her jaw. “Okay, I’ll back off. But I’ll still be there for you. Kind of like your own personal safety net.” Kendall gave him a tentative smile.
“Thank you.” Then she leaned in and drifted a soft kiss across his lips. “If I had known they were making safety nets so handsome, I would have gotten myself one sooner.”
Brad reached for her hand again. “Come on,” he said, pulling her toward the parking lot. “Let’s go back to your place and I’ll show you what else safety nets are good for.”
“And what’s that?” He flashed her a wicked grin. “Getting tangled in.”"
Brad was dreamy with all that quiet strength and resolve, he had so much love and tenderness.
"“Look, it’s okay. I don’t expect you to say I love you back. At least, not right now,” he said with a grin, hoping to coax a smile from her. She did smile back, but it didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Okay, thanks for being…honest.”
Brad stifled a sigh. He told her he loved her and she thanked him for being honest. Of all the possible scenarios of how his declaration of love would be received, never in his wildest fantasies had he counted on that one.
“And as long as we’re being honest,” she went on,“I want you to know that I’ve really been enjoying our time together, too.” She bit her lip, hesitating. “I’m sorry I can’t give you more than that.” He nodded once.
“It’s okay. Like I said, no pressure. I’m carrying enough love for the both of us.”"
*sighs* And he even had a uniform!! *stares into space dreamily* Ok, where was I? Ah yes, the characters. As for the secondary cast, well maybe those who have read the first book enjoyed this a bit better, but I found that there was just a bit too much of Georgie and her husband in the story (the hero and heroine of Georgie on my Mind, the 1st book).
The story unfolded verry slowly but that was expected and even realistic considering the heroine is a grieving widow, so I knew with such a set-up I had to be patient. And once Brad decided he wasn’t happy sitting on the sideline and wanted to convince Kendall to give him a chance, things progressed nicely. Sure it wasn’t at breakneck speed, but with the PG rating as well as the specific condition of the heroine I felt it was acceptable.
After I saw some negative ratings on Goodreads I was curious to see how Kissing Kendall would fare and was pleasantly surprised what a wonderful, well written and enjoyable story it turned out to be.
Verdict: Kissing Kendall was a very pleasant surprise for me. The story flew smoothly and Jennifer Shirk is a natural storyteller, her writing is wonderfully evocative, heartfelt and moving. The end wasn’t such a hit with me as I’m not a fan of public declarations and I found Kendall’s realization a bit sudden, but Kendall and Brad are really good together. Kissing Kendall is one of those romances that makes you sigh with satisfaction and contentment because you just know that the hero and heroine will live happily ever after even after “The End”.
Kissing Kendall was a delightful, heart-warming story and I’m looking forward to reading more stories by Jennifer Shirk!

This author is becoming one of my favorites--especially for a feel-good sweet romance.
Kendall Grisbaum is a widow but her friends feel she should really move on with her life now encourage her to open up a bakery. Enter Brad Mayer her good friend and local police officer. He's always had feelings for Kendall but never told her because he was afraid it would interfere with their friendship. He beings to help with repairs to the bakery and they start to have feelings for one another. Problem is she is reluctant because she doesn't want to lose his friendship and she already lost her husband in a fire and doesn't want to lose Brad since he also has a job where he risks his life.
I really felt for Kendall and enjoyed the humor and heart mixed within the story.

It is with a big smile that I put my stamp of approval on this wonderful romance. I loved every minute of this fabulous romance. Is it cheesy and sappy? Possibly, but it was so well-written that I didn't notice. I loved Brad and Kendall, and their romance just sent chills through me. There was some very minor profanity that honestly did not bother me, and there was no sex! Yes!! Jennifer Shirk has a delightful sense of humor--something I often say is lacking in books today. The interactions were genuine, and although the book ended as it should, it was well worth the ride.
Even though this is a light read, I so glad there was a message in it that everyone needs to hear. Don't ever be afraid to love. We are not guaranteed tomorrow, and if you live your life in fear, you are certainly going to miss some wonderful times. Take advantage of the opportunities that are facing you now. If you wait, they may pass you by!

I enjoyed this fourth book by Jennifer Shirk. Her characters are real and come to life on her pages. Georgie, from Georgie On His Mind returns in this book, wanting the best for her brother, Brad and her best friend, Kendall. Brad finally admits his long felt emotions for Kendall and she faces her fear of losing anyone she loves. Jennifer's characters are stronger then they think they are and find the happiness they are seeking. Wish this book was longer and hope that Jennifer revisits Brad and Kendall as she did with Georgie in one of her next books. A great, enjoyable read to kick back with and banish your own real life stressors! Looking forward to many more!

This was another sweet romance. It has the sizzle and romance I love. Kendall is trying to carve out a new life after losing her husband. With the help of her friends she is trying to step out and try living again, follow old dreams. Brad has been looking out for Kendall even though she doesn't know it. When he finally steps back into her life, the sizzle begins. But Brad is a cop and Kendall is afraid of losing another person she loves to a dangerous profession.

I read Georgie on His Mind awhile ago, but it was nice to revisit the characters again. Kendall is basically a widow trying to pick up the pieces of her life both with her bakery business and with her love life. Brad Mayer has always loved her from afar but never said anything. Now that she’s lost her husband, he finally has the opportunity to make his feelings known—and boy, does he. LOL! VERY cute and refreshingly clean read.

You just have to love a good best friends to lovers kind of story, especially with some good angst thrown in for good measure. Brad was so sweet and sexy, and I really felt for Kendall who is a widow and reluctant to get involved with Brad because of their friendship and his job.
The secondary characters added to the lightheartedness of the read, and I adored the small-town feel of the book.

Oh, how I love a sweet and charming romance that simply sweeps you off your feet. That is exactly what Kissing Kendall did for me. There was definitely a sad undertone to it because of Kendall’s late husband, but the story is about finding love after loss and discovering what makes you happy in life, which I loved. The characters were so lovable and hilarious, the love was so endearing and heartfelt, you can’t help but love every minute of reading this.
Kendall is a very likable character. After suffering from the loss of her husband and an even tougher loss as a child, she’s trying to put her life back together, discover what she loves to do, and try to find love and happiness again. Her path to happiness is one I thoroughly enjoyed. Even though she often doubts herself, she’s a pretty strong female, with an amazing talent at whipping up some delicious treats. I like that this was about more than the romance, and focused on Kendall realizing her potential and working hard to get what she wants in life.
As for Brad, I’d have to say it’d be hard not to fall for a guy like that. He’s a police officer, and a darn good one at that, a caring brother, and a good friend. Plus, he’s a hottie! I love that Kissing Kendall was in dual POVs, so you can see just how much Brad cares, and has cared, for Kendall since they first met. The ways he stumbles and acts around her is too cute and I loved watching their love blossom. There are definitely some bumps along the way and Shirk makes you wonder if Kendall can really open up her heart again to love.
I really can’t say anything more than this was such a sweet, fun, and light read for me. I think this would be a perfect summer read, or a book you’ll want to grab when you want to experience that “Awww”-cheesy smile-dreamy sigh feeling you get when you see two people fall in love in the perfect way. Not only are the main characters entertaining, the secondary characters are super hilarious and so lovable, it really adds to my unwavering affection for this book. Shirk has definitely got a fan in me!

She is a talented baker and her friends encourage her to open her own bakery. She hesitates because she thinks it's a big step for her to make, but her friend Brad puts it in perspective for her and she decides to give it a go.
Brad has been Kendall's friends since the first time his sister brought Kendall to the house. He has always been attracted to her, but when his best friend made a move on her and married her he stepped back. I truly enjoyed this book. Kendall and Brad were great characters to get to know. From the start I could see where each was coming from and I wanted them to work. This was a fun and quick book to read, and was just what I needed to make me sit for awhile this week. I was attracted to this book first off because of the title. My maiden name is Kendall and I always thought it would be neat to have a daughter named Kendall (that didn't happen, but my daughter says if she ever has a boy she is going to name HIM Kendall - Oh well, close enough!)
I really liked Kendall and while I didn't feel sorry for her (she had lost her husband Jake, a fireman, after just a couple of months of marriage), I did feel sympathy for her. On their urging she makes up her mind to go ahead and open up a bakery - something she has always wanted to do. This also brings Brad, Georgie's brother, a reason to spend more time with her. Brad and Kendall had been friends until Kendall married Jake. What Kendall didn't realize was that Brad had more than just "friend" feelings for Kendall.
I loved the chemistry between Brad and Kendall. I am not sure why it works for some authors when they write scenes that take chemistry, but it definitely worked here! You could almost see the sparks sizzling off the page (ok - off the Nook, and No, I hadn't spilled something on it!) I got to the first good part when I was sitting in the dentist chair and had to put it away! I couldn't wait to get home so I could start reading it again.

I realised this was book 2 of a series but I still ended up reading this one first. And I'm glad to tell you this one stands alone well enough. Not for once, I felt the need to go read book 1 or that I was missing out on something.
I like the little bit of innovation in the plot. Oh yes, you remember I love baking books? Well, guess what, maybe they have become a tad too repetitive to hold my interest anymore. Uh huh! But good for the book, it concentrated on more important issues and kept baking mostly in the background.
The characters are real and nicely built (oh, I may also be pointing out to the physique of a certain main character. *wink wink* ).
The story is simple enough but mercifully I didn't feel the pace was too slow albeit I may have felt 'oh, move on already' a couple of times but I knew that the author was being realistic. So 'oh well'.
Overall, if you are looking for a clean romance and some easy reading, pick this one up.

Definitely one of the best book i've read so far!
Sweet and romantic and sweet and.. Sweet! That's all I can tell about this book.
Kendall's still grieving after her husband, Jake, died in fire accident. He was a firefighter. But when her bestfriend's brother, Brad, starts giving her attention and protection, her belly also starts getting a tight knots. She loves his attention. Brad, on the other hands, already have this special feelings for Kendall. In fact, he's having those feeling long before Kendall got married. When the unfortunate happens to Kendall's husband, he fight his own guilt and make a move..
Don't expect hot steamy scene in this book, because there's not any. But I find this book very fun to read and very swet it makes your toes curl in a different way.
That classic brother of bestfriend fling always punch in a right place. I love it! Way to go, Miss Shirk! :)

Kendall is a widow who's heart is broken and the fear of more loss in her life has her unreceptive to love. Although at times she is indecisive about her feelings and decisions she is endearing and sweet. Brad comes in like a breath of fresh air with his heart on his sleeve. I loved his down to earth personality and all though he tries to deny his feelings for Kendall he never gives up. The stuff heroes are made of. A nice light romance that is enjoyable. 3.5 stars

Another one of Jennifer's amazing romances! This love story is as sweet and tender as the baked confectionary that Kendall makes in her business. I was rooting for this love story all the way - they were perfect for each other and the hero was such a perfect guy - who wouldn't fall in love with him? No more spoilers - just read it - it's a real treat.

Kissing Kendall is very sweet and romantically tame story about two friends that take a chance at romance. This book was a perfect quick fix about love, loss and friendship.
Kendall Grisbaum happens to be going through a tough time in life. She lost her parents at a young age, as well as her husband who was in a firefighting accident. She’s not up for taking chances because she’s felt first-hand the disappointment and hurt of having people she loves exit her life. When her long time friend Brad starts to come around more often as he helps her get her new bakery ready for its grand-opening, she struggles with the feelings she has for him.
It’s been two years since Kendall lost Jake in a tragic accident, but Brad can’t seem to let go of the guilt he’s felt for harboring feelings for his friend’s wife. However, Kendall and Brad have known each other since they were kids, and when he finally takes a chance to expose his true feelings, he’s not quite prepared for the reaction he gets from Kendall.
There wasn’t really any point in this story that I felt remorse for Kendall’s loss. I don’t mean to sound like a heartless person, but it was clear that she was ready to move on and she simply needed to get over her fear of losing someone she loves. I appreciated how Shirk didn’t focus on the tragedy, but rather the aftermath of moving on. I feel Brad’s profession as a police officer challenged Kendall in several ways because as much as she wanted to “play it safe” with her next relationship, it was quite clear you can’t help who you fall for. I have a soft spot for service men and women, so I enjoyed Brad’s character immensely. He was the perfect addition to this cast of characters and it also helps that he was quite swoon-worthy. ~blushes~
I loved the added mix of the bakery and sweet treats. I might even try the recipe at the end of the story, but overall, it was fun to witness these two overcome their skittishness for each other and allow their feelings to just grow all the while enjoying a batch of muffins. ☺
This story is light on the romance, but still full of heart. As with the other novel I read by Jennifer Shirk, I appreciate the awkward moments she infuses into her story because it makes them feel real. Kissing Kendall is a fun contemporary romance and once again Shirk does not disappoint.

It's been two years since Kendall Grisbaum lost her husband Jake, who was a firefighter, in an on-the-job accident. She and Jake were young and newly married, and the loss has devastated her, especially after loosing both of her parents when she was younger. Brad Mayer is Kendall's best friend Georgie's brother, and was always very good friend of Kendall's also. Brad's sister Georgie is constantly trying to fix him up, but what Georgie doesn't know is that Brad has always had feelings for Kendall, feelings he had to bury when she married Jake, feelings that have caused him to keep his distance from her, though not far enough that he still can't keep an eye on her. Kendall never understood why Brad stopped coming around after she and Jake got married, especially since Jake was his friend and he introduced them. After running into him one evening, she realizes how much she has missed him.
After coincidence and matchmaking attempts from both Georgie and Kendall's grandma keep pushing them together, Kendall can't deny the desire and feelings she has for Brad, despite how hard she tries to. Meanwhile, Brad is trying his best to keep his feelings for Kendall under control, and it's a lot harder than he thought it would be. Just when things seem to be going in the right direction, something happens that causes all of Kendall's pent up fears, fears that she has barely managed to contain, to spiral out of control. Will she let her fears destroy both of them and any chance they may have, or will she be able to move past them and finally be willing to open up her heart to someone again?

Kendall was trying to put her life back together, after the death of her husband, by making her dreams of opening a bakery come true. As she works to get her bakery ready, with the help of her best friend's brother, Brad, she discovers that all the fears that had her putting her life on hold might be what cause her to lose exactly what she's looking for.
Who doesn't love a romance involving the best friend's hot brother and our heroine? That's exactly what we get with Kissing Kendall. Kendall and Georgie are best friends. Brad is Georgie's older brother. Brad was best friends with Kendall's husband. But Brad and Kendall have all these feelings for each and neither of them know exactly what to do with them now that Kendall is single.
While the story would get a 1 on the hotness scale, it gets a 4 for sweetness as we following Kendall and Brad through their rebuilding of their friendship (and Kendall's bakery) to finally admitting how they feel for each other. Kendall had to get over her fear of having another public servant significant other and Brad had to get over the whole little sister's best friend/best friend's wife issue, but in the end they were able to realize that begin together was worth all the fear and anxiety.
This was a cute, sweet story about finding love where you least expect it. If you're in the mood for a feel good read that won't take an emotional toll, pick this one up.

The author uses just the right mix of friendship and grandmotherly advice to push Kendall out of her comfort zone and to drive the storyline forward. After much consideration, Kendall decides to pursue her dream of opening a bakery and to start dating.
I enjoyed the character of Georgie. Georgie has found love & happiness, she is married and pregnant and wants Kendall and her brother Brad to find the same. She is a full- time pharmacist and a part time matchmaker!
Brad has had feelings for Kendall for a long time and at first is afraid to pursue them. Kendall views Brad as a friend.

That was a fun, quick read. I really enjoyed how real everyone seemed and how good the relationship was between the main characters. It was so sweet and had me smiling lots!
The only things I didn't like we're these: 1. That the reason she had a hard time giving the relationship a chance was because of her grief over her dead husband. I can understand that, but I wasn't expecting that after not hearing about it at all in the synopsis given on Goodreads. I thought it would be more lighthearted than it was. 2. I guess I can't really fault the characters, but they seemed to say the same things or have the same thoughts and excuses over and over. I kept thinking, "just tell each other how you feel!" Or, "Get over it already! Sheesh!" Yeah. Not a very nice reader, huh?
Oh well. I still give it 4 1/2 stars, so it really was good. :)

Loved this latest installment in the Maritime City series! It was great to visit this set of characters again, and the story of Brad/Kendall had me flipping through the pages...pretty sure I finished this one in record time!
It had all the elements of Shirk's stories that I've come to love---it was sweet, fast paced, hilarious at times, and the relationships/interactions between characters so well done that it just felt like family. Shirk excels at giving us a glimpse into the life of Kendall and her family and friends, and I loved every perfectly broken, blissful moment. :-)

Kissing Kendall is such a cute, fun read! Brad has been in love with Kendall for forever! Kendall lost her husband of a few months and is scared to love again. After reading the teaser of Kissing Kendall in the back of A Little Bit Cupid, I was hooked. Brad was a great guy. This is part of a series but I felt it stood on its own.
