Read "This book will be your roadmap to implementing the CCSS Standards for Mathematical Practice. The explanations, examples, activities, and suggestions are intended to guide you to a deepened understanding of the Practice Standards so your classroom is filled with students who reason, apply, and truly understand mathematics." Susan O'Connell and John SanGiovanni The Standards for Mathematical Practice promise to elevate students' learning of math from knowledge to application and bring rigor to our math classrooms. But how can we incorporate the Practices into our teaching and ensure that our students develop these critical skills? Sue O'Connell and John SanGiovanni unpack each of the eight Practices and provide a wealth of practical ideas and activities to help you quickly integrate them into your existing math program. Putting the Practices Into Action breaks each standard down to The authors show the true power of the standards by describing how they intermingle, blending together to empower students to use math and think mathematically. With classroom vignettes, sample activities, and helpful teaching tips, Putting the Practices Into Action brings the standards to life by illustrating what they look like in real classrooms. Discover how to integrate the Practices into your teaching, and let the journey of implementation begin.
Professional read, obviously. We often hear parents say that math is taught differently now and they can’t help their kids - even elementary age. This book shed so much light on WHY and HOW we approach mathematics instruction. I learned the “why” behind so many math “rules” and “tricks”. This has given me a lot insight into into the considerations we need to make for EL students, LD students, and GT students.
(My standard for five stars is that a book needs to wrap up all the plot lines/topics, make me laugh, and make me cry. Take out the laugh/cry criteria and this would be five stars easy.)
I read this for work - super helpful for understanding the Standards for Math Practices, which are a significant part of the Common Core (and an integral part to ensuring your math teaching is building thinking mathematicians).
This was a great book to help get past the traditional way of looking at math. It has some good strategies to use in the classroom. This book is going on the book shelf.
This is by far one of the best resources I've read on the common core practice standards - not only do the authors clearly break down each standard into understandable terms, they provide ready-to-go ways to incorporate the standard into the classroom. From real world examples of how we utilize the practice standards in everyday life to actual classroom conversations highlighting the practices, this book is down-to-earth and incredibly practical. Highly recommended for anybody working in elementary education!
Add this one to your math TBR tower. Joan Smith recommended it, and she got that right. A strong focus in the 8 mathematical processes will bring all the other math CCSS into focus. Lots of practical ideas.
This book was a fantastic hands on approach to looking at the way we teach math with the common core. I enjoyed this book and will use it as a reference as I prepare my lessons.
