This book is indeed the “ultimate” puppy guide. The first half of the book is the week-by-week guide for owning your puppy (including “pre-puppy” advice). The second half is more like an encyclopedia. It has everything from training tips to what’s normal/abnormal behaviour, advice on how to approach taking a vacation (with or without taking the dog along), a detailed guide on reading a dog’s body language, how to take care of their health - even advice on how to just play with your puppy. I learned quite a lot. While I grew up with dogs, I haven’t owned a dog in my adult life, so this was a really enlightening read. For instance, I didn’t realize that I should avoid taking my dog on actual walks until they are about 11-12 weeks old, not only because of vaccination concerns, but also because too much exercise at that age can impact their growth. I also hadn’t thought of protecting rugs and hanging towels with puppy proofing my home.
I found the book, The Puppy Bible, by Claire Arrowsmith, an extremely helpful book. It gives you a week by week guide to your puppy. It includes their behavior, anatomy, and what to do during that time. It also gives you tips on what breed to get, based on your living conditions, wants, and needs, how to train your puppy, housebreaking, grooming, socialization, vaccinations, and so much more. It includes how to teach your dog to sit, stay, heel, down, and roll over. I am getting a puppy soon so this is very helpful to me. This is why I like the book The Puppy Bible.
A really useful book and something I would recommend reading before getting a puppy as it has lots of information regarding choosing a breed, and things to consider before bringing a puppy home. The week by week guide is really informative and provides useful reminders and check lists. There is a guide to body language and behaviour which helped us when socialising our puppy and gave me an idea for what to look for when he was meeting other dogs. All in all a great book to have on the shelf for any dog owner.
A Brilliant Week by Week Guide to Raising Your Puppy & what to except along the way including the bumps in the road & how to correct bad behaviour. This incredible puppy bible begins before you even decide to buy the dog! It takes you through the very first steps of selecting a breed and knowing what type of breed is right for you, your family and your home including thoughts like exercise, cost of feed health care & equipment needed b4 the pup arrives and time needed to be spent with the dog relaxing, training and exercising.
I bought this book for the week-by-week development guide, and I'm so glad I did. It really provides good information to help you understand and prepare for your puppy. I could have used a little more information on vaccinations, choosing a high-quality food, and additional training tips, but I thought the topics covered were helpful. I'll be referring to this a lot!
This book is a real lifesaver. Having just got a puppy for the first time this book has made life a lot easier by breaking down, week by week, the training of a puppy. It also provides a really good encyclopaedia in the second half of the book on important information about puppy behaviours. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who gets a dog for the first time.
This book should only be used by complete novices. Much of its advice is contrasted my research (such as not taking the dog out of the house until after 14 weeks, and other outdated training methods). It is a fine intro book, but not to be taken as the only resource.
if you are planning on getting a puppy, read this book. The book is great. You will learn week by week the development of your puppy as he becomes an adult dog including what warning behavior signs to watch for and how to fix them. The book also.covers grooming, basic training, and let care.
Offers week-by-week tips and tricks for managing your new puppy, from the very beginning to adult-hood. I found quite a few useful bits of advice in this book.
Very easy guide to raising a puppy. It goes week by week and explains your puppys development each week. Took this out from the library, but definitely am buying it.
