(Vocal Selections). Based on a controversial 1891 German play, Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater turned the story into an exciting rock musical that went on to win eight Tony Awards in 2007 including the coveted best musical. Our piano/vocal selections feature 17 of the songs, All That's Known * The Bitch of Living * The Dark I Know Well * I Believe * Mama Who Bore Me * My Junk * Those You've Known * Touch Me * The Word of Your Body * and more. This souvenir folio also includes great color photos from the Broadway production. PARENTAL EXPLICIT LYRICS
I can't believe that I'm giving this book only 4 stars, but that's all I can't conjure up for it to deserve. Yes, the songs in the show are mind-shatteringly gorgeous, but I don't feel that this book completely captures it. For one, it doesn't include Mama Who Bore Me reprise, and while, sure, maybe that song isn't an integral part of the show; I really wanted the sheet music for it! How am I supposed to sing it in choir now?!
Aside from that, they're also missing a lot of harmonies. For instance, all of the backups from Touch Me and The Dark I Know Well (and assuredly others) are missing. Now I'm just going to have to find it some other way. *Shush* So, in that case, this book is not helpful in the least.
I do completely and utterly adore it, though, because most of these songs are incredibly easy to play on the piano. Clearly they've been dumbed down. I have never taken a lesson in my life, and I can play a couple of these songs all the way through. You have no idea how thrilled that makes me! And even if I can't play it all the way through, I can play a large portion of most of the songs. I haven't gotten that out of any of my other vocal selection books, and it gives me a new respect for Spring Awakening. The songs are so incredibly simple but also enormously beautiful. Love.
