4 stars – Contemporary Romance/Erotica/BDSM

I love contemporary erotic romance with sexy alpha cowboy heroes, and I was looking for a smokin’ hot read to fill the void while waiting for Lorelei James’s next Rough Riders series release, and boy howdy, Roping the Wind is definitely a hot read...YOWZA!

Jay Turner, a 30-year-old gold-buckled rodeo cowboy, is feeling broken, washed up, and sorry for himself after a career ending bull riding knee injury. The last thing he wants is help from his brother Grayson or career and life advice from his icy cold, prim and proper, orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Helen Kinsale. The chilly, stick-up-the-ass doctor annoys the heck out of him (and threatens his alpha pride), but he can’t deny the fierce attraction and explosive chemistry between them. Helen’s career is on the fast-track, but her manipulative, lying, cheating ex-husband and some past secrets threaten her hard-earned professional reputation and a potential promotion. She’s more stressed than ever and is tired of being in control of everything in her life. She needs some sexual relief, but after several disappointing and unsatisfying relationships, Helen wants a man who can take charge in the bedroom and command her body. When Jay makes her a bold, intimate, carnal offer to indulge her deepest, darkest desires in exchange for giving up all sexual control to him, she flat can’t refuse. But neither of them expected their no-holds-barred, wild affair to fulfill them emotionally or for deeper feelings to emerge.

There’s just something about hot alpha cowboys that curl my toes, and Jay is described as a young, Robert Redford look alike, which was an added delight! Roping the Wind is a very sexy read with lots and lots of wicked, mildly kinky, hot sex, including some light bondage with leather and creative, fun use of a saddle in the bedroom. I didn’t totally buy into the H/H having actual feelings for each other because it seemed like all they really had in common was a strong sexual compatibility, and they only admitted to some deeper, albeit unresolved, unsorted, and not fully declared, feelings towards the very last part of the book. That leads to my biggest complaint, which is that the ending was so abrupt that I almost thought my book might have been missing some pages. The H/H make some feeble declarations and then there are a few joking comments about being able to tie each other up at whim, and then whoosh, it’s over. I was like...wha, huh?

Overall, it’s a spicy, fun erotic read with a stubborn, sinfully sexy, stud alpha cowboy and lots of smokin’ hot sex, and although not nearly as good as Lorelei James’s Rough Riders series, which isn’t really a fair comparison because she’s the best when it comes to erotic contemporary western romance, it’s still well worth the time. 4 stars!

The first time I read Roping the Wind was back in 2013 when I’d first discovered Kate Pearce but I had less than zero recollection on any details of the stories except the 3 star rating I assigned it back then so I thought, why not? Let’s give it a try.”, and I’m glad I did. I have no idea why I’d only give it a 3 star rating a decade ago, but it definitely deserves a solid 4+ solid rating today!

This is the Kate I have known and loved for over a decade! Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to say that she’s been writing less than spectacular books as of late, but this book and it’s circumstances and sexual driven characters and plotline are what Kate excels at. She’s one of the few authors that I’ve encountered that can write a well thought out #sexfest with a storyline and characters you can get behind and root for! Feel me? Lol The sexual nature of Jay & Helen’s journey never overshadows their growing relationship towards a forever future. It intermingles perfectly and it brought so much joy to my heart because I am a ridiculous fan of this author! :)

Roping the Wind is not just a romance journey between Jay & Helen, but al so a growth journey for both Jay & Helen. All three of these plot-points intertwined with each other really well and neither could have been possible with the other which made for a really good storyline! I’m excited to reacquaint myself with Where Have All the Cowboys Gone? next!

OMG I loved this book, love love loved it,everything about Jay, Helen, the cat, the sex, the emotion, the whole lot! So much so that I bought a copy (this was a library loan) together with the other two books in the series (about Jays half brothers),and can't wait to read them too!

From the first page Jay (ex-rodeo Bull rider) and Helen (his orthopeadic surgeon) grabbed my attention, and not just because of the sexual relationship between them which is hot sweet kink but their emotional relationship too, which develops from guarded wariness (from both of them)to realization of who they both are as their sexual relationship deepens.

On the emotional side, both are from backgrounds that required them to be emotionally hard, and of course by toughening up in that way both seem to have lost a bit their true self along the way. So this is the story of them both reclaiming that little bit of themselves that they thought they'd lost and realizing what they want from life and their relationship. This isn't deep, hard, emotional stuff that will tear you apart tho' It's a nice sweet story about finding yourself thru someone else and their love.

With regard to the between the sheets action OMG this is wonderful, smoking hot, slightly kinky and sweet all at the same time and there's alot of it, but it all takes places within context of the story...never once is a scene out of place.....I will say that there is alot of oral action for those of you who aren't keen and some anal sex as well, but, this is so well written that the scenes are not icky....Jay and Helen share some fantastic fun sex and despite Helens fleeting reservations that shes turned into a slut this is never ever the case, she remains classy and sweet throughout.

I just loved this book, but i guess you can tell that, and would say that if you're looking for a hot, sweetly kinky story, with a H/H who are looking for something more in life then this could be a book you'd enjoy as much as I did.

This is a 'prequel' of sorts to a really excellent book, "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?". Although this was a pretty good read, and it did get better as the story developed, I found that I didn't like the characters as much as I expected to.
Basically it's about a former rodeo cowboy who's injured one too many times and has to give up his career. He has knee surgery and takes up with the lady doctor who operates on him. They have a no-holds barred affair; neither seem to want or expect more--both are really down on love. Although their love scenes were hot, I just didn't feel the emotional connection between them--at least not right away. For them it was just all about the sex. But later in the story they do start to care, but both are wary about opening up and revealing their inner selves. When they started showing their feelings to one another is when it started to get good, but by then the story was nearly over. I guess I just needed a few more chapters to convince me that this couple would make it.

I am confused. This book started out interesting, and rapidly went downhill! It was a completely frustrating feeling. This book didn't end, it just STOPPED!

Jay and Helen had a lot of seggs, but didn't seem to me to have much chemistry. Their relationship waa a constant battle and the ONLY enjoyment seemed to come from their intimate encounters.

Helen had these men in her professional life that were consistently condescending, and she never got to put them in their place. I was hoping at minimum when she showed up at the barbeque with Jay that he would put them in their place. I was extremely tired at this point of all the feelings of inadequacy.

The inadequacy feelings continued throughout this entire book with both of the main characters. They felt they were not good enough to be in their current profession or trying to start a new one.

There was nothing fun, sweet, romantic, or uplifting going on. No one was getting what they deserved for trying to drag Helen and/or Jay down. Both Rob and Grayson seemed to be the only people supportive of Jay. It was hard to figure out if Jay and Helen were supportive of one another.

I didn't understand why something Helen did as a teenager was still hanging over her head? With everything she had accomplished, it should have been insignificant at this stage of her life.

This book made me feel like it was all over the place with a bunch of unhappy people. Whether it was due to them feeling inadequate, or getting off on being arrogant and condescending, or being unhappy with the direction their lives were taking. They ALL seemed miserable to me.

I have no idea where Helen and Jay's relationship stands. No idea if he is going to continue with the boot making career. No idea what happened with Helen and the hospital. No idea if Peter or David ever get their comeuppance. No idea about anything.

I voluntarily read and reviewed the Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

2 - 2 1/2 stars. I was okay with this story actually really started liking it and then the end just went and screwed it up. First of all both of the characters were very cold, didn't even like each other. Jay was a sexy cowboy/bull rider, Robert Redford look alike, but had a career ending ride that screwed up his knee, so he was a little down and surly- completely understandable. Helen was a standoffish doctor who didn't like or trust anyone, had some hidden secrets and most people didn't like her. She was a successful doctor though and was the surgeon who operated on Jay's knee. Somehow the two ended up having a "sex" relationship where Jay was the dominant. Well it worked, the story was well written and I could see how both of them let down their guards towards each other and needed each other. They had some wild monkey sex and some kinky, creepy sex (with a leather belt- not your normal leather belt restraining sex let's just say) and I really liked them together especially how they supported one another.

Where everything went down hill for me was the ending and usually I can get over a few things I don't agree with in a book, but this ending really killed it for me. Helen had some real jerks in her past, her ex and her colleagues, they were pretty ruthless. I wanted some retribution, some real comeuppance, even though it was hinted at, it never came. The story just ended. As to Jay, his direction just didn't seem feasible as well, more pie in the sky. Pretty disappointing because I can usually count on Kate Pearce to give you a really hot tale with deep connections, this was going in that direction, but I was gypped in the ending.

I haven't read a contemporary romance that I've truly enjoyed in a while. This was fan yourself hot, had characters you could buy into, and realistic HEA that sort of just pointed the way. It was a quick read (comparatively speaking -- I'm a slow reader). I would be interested in seeing what else Kate Pearce has to offer after this title.

This book was very disappointing compared to (Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?). Neither the story or the characters, Jay the cowboy or Helen, the doctor, seem to have any direction or purpose. Everything was just all over the place. Way too much sex and not enough story!

i really loved this story. Really got involved with the characters Jay( Ex Rodeo cowboy) and Helen (Orthopedic Surgeon). They are both hard and stubborn due to various events throughout their lives but they learn to care and trust each other. Lots of sex, anal and oral but its written well into the story. Really enjoyable read. Can be read in isolation but 2nd book in series "Where have all the cowboys gone" is just as good. Cant wait to check out more of Kate Pearce's books.

I received a complimentary copy of this book and I am voluntarily reviewing it.

I am in a little debate with my self as to the star rating. I don't care for some of the sexual scenes in this book but it appears that the character (Helen) wasn't against it so she wasn't force by any means. Just not my cup of tea.

I really felt like something with missing for me though. There was a side of her life as a doctor and little else. It was mostly just sex. I really didn't feel a connect between the two other than BDSM sex.

I normally enjoy this author's work but this one just fell flat for me. Having said that, it may appeal to others.

I have yet to read a book by Kate Pearce that I didn't thoroughly enjoy, and this one was no exception. I really liked this book and zipped right through it.

Series Note:
This book has connections to 2 other books. I'm a bit unclear on the order, though, because I would have thought this was book 1 and Jay's brother's book was book 2, but the author's site says this is book is book 2 and the brother's book #1. Not sure how that works timeline wise. But either way, you can read this one without having read others.

Summary:
Jay Turner is a rodeo cowboy hanging onto his career by the skin of his teeth due to several knee injuries. He's on his last chance to become a champion when he's thrown from a vicious bull and trashes his knee. Dr. Helen Kinsale is there to help put it back together again. But Jay's career is over and know he must try to figure out what to do with his life.

In the process, he comes to realize Helen isn't quite the obnoxious doctor he thought she was. So he proposes a no-strings attached affair And Helen agrees because after years of forcing herself to be the consummate professional, it's time to think of herself for a change, and time to explore her hidden submissive side. The turn burn up the sheets but neither expected it to become more. Unfortunately, both have inner demons they must battle before they can move on to a future together.

Review:
There's something about Kate Pearce's writing style that I just really like. Her prose is very readable and she knows how to tell a good story. Even when the nature of a romance in one of her books may not quite be to my liking, I end up liking the book because of the way she tells the story (see Simply Insatiable). This book didn't fall into that category; I just enjoyed it all around.

Jay Turner is a sexy, dominant cowboy...and what's not to like about that? He's a guy whose world has been turned upside down by a career ending injury and now he finds himself at loose ends. He's got no direction, no clue where to go next. You can't help by feel sorry for him because he's so lost and depressed. You just want to take him under your wing and point him in the right direction. And it's great to get to read about him finding a new direction, something that's he's passionate about. His new career is perfect for him. I love what Pearce did with his character. He's definitely a bit of a Dom, though, taking charge of his relationship with Helen and bringing out her submissive streak. Not every reader will like that aspect, but it doesn't bother me.

Then there's Helen. Interesting character. She didn't quite turn out like I expected. Initially, she seems like she's a repressed professional woman who is exploring her sexually submissive side by getting involved with Jay. Then you come to learn more about her and there's a lot more to Helen than one would expect. It was definitely surprising. I didn't like her as much as I liked Jay, but she was still an interesting character.

And their relationship...whew! Scorching hot stuff in this book. These two set the pages on fire. And I must admit there were some creative scenes from author Kate Pearce. Sexy, sexy stuff. I'll never look at belts the same way again ;) There are a lot of sex scenes too, but with as well-rounded the other parts of the book are, it doesn't seem excessive.

And the rest of the book is pretty well-rounded. Not as much, say, as a standard contemporary romance, but unlike many erotic romances where you get inundated with sex and underwhelmed by the character development and storyline, this book delivers on all fronts. You get a great sense of the characters, their growth and their struggles. Jay must find a new direction in life, and Helen deals with a career & personal crisis. It was all well told and kept the book from being a pointless sex fest.

My one criticism of the story would be that by the time the end rolled around, there are some things left kind of unfinished. Especially regarding Helen's career. There's a lot of the book dedicated to her career crisis and then to not know how it all turns out is a bit irritating, especially when you feel a bit invested in the characters. I just wanted to know more about how things ended up for these two characters. It detracted some from the storyline, but not too much.

And now that I've read this one, I need to get my hands on the book about Jay's brother, Grayson (Where Have all the Cowboys Gone?). Unfortunately, it's $19 on Amazon...which is rather pricey. We'll see. But in the meantime, for you Kate Pearce fans, I think you'll like this one. And for those of you who enjoy contemporary erotic romance, give this one a try.

WARNING, this book contains: explicit sex and language, oral sex, anal sex & ass play, some dominance/submission, bondage, leather/belt play, sex on a saddle, sex play in public places, toys, handcuffs...maybe a few other things...(all m/f)

Great start to a new steamy series. Jay is a washed-up rodeo cowboy with a bad knee. Helen is an orthopedic surgeon and has problems of her own. When Jay offers an affair, she takes the chance for a little escape. What will happen when it becomes so much more? Fast-paced read with intense chemistry, plenty of drama and sizzling scenes. I loved it.

I received an ARC from Bookfunnel in exchange for an voluntary, honest review. This was a great start to the Turner brother series. Jay is a rodeo star that suffers a career ending injury. Helen is his surgeon. This novel is smoking hot. It was wonderfully written and a pleasure to read as the two main characters fall in love. This is definitely a must read.

Loved this new book by author Kate Pearce. It was a little different style than I’m used to with this author & it was really good. This story takes on the journey of 2 people finding themselves in a new relationship. An injury takes Jay out of the rodeo & into the care of Dr. Helen but as he’s exiting her care, he decides to act upon feelings that have been swirling in him. As her job & life become more stressful, Helen is given a chance to give up control & allows Jay to bring her old self back to her. Definitely recommend. I received an ARC for an honest review.

This is the first book in The Turner Brothers series and features Jay Turner, who has just experienced a career-ending injury in a rodeo bull riding competition. Jay has been a prominent competitor in the PBR circuit for twelve years; but at age 30, he must face the realization that he needs to pursue a different career path. Dr. Laura Kinsale, an orthopedic surgeon, happened to be the doctor on duty the night that Jay was injured. She operated on his injured knee and cared for him as he recovered. After six months of physical therapy and rehab, Dr. Helen tells him that his knee will not hold up if he continues to pursue a career in rodeo events. She dismisses him as a patient, but he proposes that they get to know each other on a more intimate level. What ensues is a very sexual and steamy relationship between these two people who are essentially polar opposites. As they get to know each other, they discover that they have some things in common, especially in their pasts. They seem to fill a need that each other has.

I enjoyed both of these damaged characters. Laura has two failed marriages. The most recent was with a doctor who also works at the same hospital she does and he is trying earnestly to sabotage a promotion that she is up for so he can get it. Jay's father is very domineering and tries to bully his sons who all have different mothers. Grayson is Jay's half-brother and his only close family that has been very supportive of him since his injury. The next book is the series is about Grayson and I look forward to that.

Thank you to the author and publisher for an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) provided via BookFunnel in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This book came with a strong recommendation from a friend of mine, and since I love this author, It went to the top of my list.

I just received my copy. I normally don't like stories involving cowboys. I don't like the male aggression and possessiveness. This book deals well with that, it explains the machoism and shows the softer, less confident side.

I've just started it, but I'm loving it so far.

-Joe-

I have never read anything involving cowboys that I liked, until now.

This is about two arrogant and domineering people meeting each other and taming each other. It is about exploring past hurts, and healing, and moving on to honesty and trust. The sex is pretty hot as well.

I assume the author must be British for the constant use of the word "learnt". Which I found very jarring in a contemporary romance about American cowboys. She also spelled "stupid" as "stoopid". Otherwise it was an OK story. I didn't like the heroine all that much.

Can't write a sex scene to save her life and the storyline isn't all that interesting. Again, just making a character wear a cowboy hat and say ma'am does not make him a cowboy.

This book was first released in 2007. A well written, steamy romance. I loved both Jay & Helen the chemistry between them sizzled & they certainly fell quickly into lust but gradually they started to open up to each other & their feelings came into play. I also liked how they both started to reassess their lives & deciding they had a future. I did feel I wanted to know how their lives panned out & would have loved an epilogue. However there are two more books in the series so I hope we catch up with them.
My review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Kate Pearce brings us the first story in a new series. We meet cowboy Jay Turner. He gets through his first ride, but ends up injuring his knee during the next round. This brings him face to face with orthopedic surgeon Dr. Helen Kinsale. With the news that this career is over, Jay is recovering while trying to figure out what to do next. Meanwhile, he has set his eyes on Dr. Helen and wants to see what could be. Helen has her own career to think of and sees Jay's offer as a way to step out of her life for awhile and try a little adventure. Will this little adventure just be a short and distant memory for both of them, or will it lead to something more?

Kate Pearce brings us a sexy story with Jay and Helen. When their worlds collide and they give in to their sense of adventure and attraction, where will it ultimately lead them? I look forward to meeting the rest of the Turner family members and reading their stories as we get to visit with those from past books. You keep wanting to turn the page to see what happens next and how they will each react to each other. And when you get to the end, you are wanting more.

I received and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I would like to thank Kate Pearce for this privilege.

I really enjoy Kate Pearce's steamy books. This one is no exception. It's a rerelease of her old book and it's fun to read a more sexy story from her once again. I enjoyed watching bull rider Jay Turner and Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Helen Kinsale fall in love. Helen is careful to be finished with Jay's care before they start their affair, not that her ex-husband doesn't try to use it against her later in the story. This story is Jay figuring out what life has for him now that his injury bars him from competing in the rodeo. Helen on the other hand is looking for love and support while competing in her ruthless male dominated profession. She's gone it alone for so long and she's feeling her way through her relationship with Jay. Things get complicated as she's up for a promotion but there are others in the field including her ex-husband David Campion. There are lots of threads in this story that make it interesting but we never know if she gets the promotion. I feel the end of the story was a bit rushed and unfinished. I'm hoping we get more of their story in the following two books in the series.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The story of a washed up bull rider, Jay and a stuck up Dr. Helen Kinsale. Who is the orthopedic surgeon that operates and treats Jay’s busted up knee that has ended his career. Jay is trying to find purpose in his life since his rodeo days are over. On his final appointment with Helen he decides to asked her out. He has been having several erotic fantasies and time to see if he can make them come to life.
Helen is a take charge kind of person, not very liked and has lost the person she really was. So when her sexy cowboy offers to show her the darker side she debates whether she is brave enough to go for it.
Definitely steamy, but short on a storyline. Too many loose ends, really needed a epilogue or will there be more to the story in the next book? This is a rerelease so I hope that since the books now are in dateline order, that there is also a continuation to tie up those loose ends. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. #RopingtheWind

Get set, go and yeehaw!!
Living the rodeo life has finally caught up with Jay Turner’s body after suffering a career ending injury, leading him to Helen for surgical treatment and months of rehabilitation. Jay is at a crossroad, trying to figure out what to do with his life after rodeo and not get involved in business with the family. Helen, with a couple of failed marriages behind her, is looking for a big change in her love life. Dropping the current boring boyfriend before a weekend getaway, Helen decides to make that change in her love life. And that change is in the form of Jay Turner. But is Helen ready for the dominance of Jay and all he wants to give? This first book in a revamped series of the Turner Brothers does not disappoint! If you’re not familiar with the writing skills of Kate Pearce, be sure to grab this & start reading now! This is not your mom’s rodeo… Enjoy! Looking forward to the next book!

First in a brand new series set in the world of PBR. At 30 Jay has to decide what to do with himself after a serious injury shattered his career as a professional bull rider. Helen, the surgeon who operated him, has always gravitated around the rodeo world but doesn’t want to get involved with another cowboy even if she’s sure Jay would be worth it! She tries to keep her distance until he makes her an offer she’s too intrigued to refuse!
Seemingly from two different worlds, Jay and Helen are not that different after all and they might have found in each other a way to come to terms with their pasts in order to build a future together.
In her unique way of writing Ms Pearce in this book deals with past hangups and insecurities of a woman who has made a name for herself in a world ruled by men ( with all the connected prejudices) and a man who always had a clear path in front of him and now has to reinvent himself.
Not to mention the fabulous and very steamy scenes only she can write.

This was definitely a steamy start to the Turner brothers series. Helen and Jay are ALWAYS going at it. It might have been a little too much physical and not enough plot. It’s obvious they both have issues with trust and commitment. Communication is not high on their list, either as they both seem intense with their emotional mood swings. But their interactions keep the story moving along and I was interested enough to want to know how it all plays out.
There’s a little blurb about Grayson’s story in the next book and that definitely looks promising. I’ll be excited to read more!

This is a well written story that is entertaining. It made me want Jay to overcome his rodeo injury and find his HEA with Helen the surgeon who saved his leg. I enjoyed how they overcame personal issues and at the same time be the support the other one needed. I also loved how Grayson, Jay’s half-brother, was always there for him even when he was being difficult. This is a story that is full of emotions that ranges from highs to lows. Definitely a story worth reading.
