This was a great, easy-to-read primer on avoiding common pitfalls in leadership, particularly for women in the church, but really applicable to anyone in a leadership capacity. The two authors illustrate each principle in the first person with anecdotes from their own experiences. At the end of each chapter are a few questions for self-reflection that I found helpful to consider in my devotional time.

I found this book particularly digestible because the only time I have to read regularly is before I fall asleep at night... and the chapters were just the right length to consume in about 20 minutes. LOL

HIghly recommended for women leaders... or aspiring women leaders.

The authors have taken us behind the curtain through their life experiences and helped us see what it is like to be a woman in leadership, particularly in the Christian church. Women who aspire to some leadership role can gain a lot of insight from this book. They have successfully done what they suggest others do in sighting a quote from Nancy Ortberg, "Help the younger generation lead by allowing them to stand on the shoulders of your experience so they can see farther than you ever could." The authors' transparency and authenticity is refreshing.

Men we, too, can learn a lot from reading this book. The book gives us insight into how to work with women. Since 60 to 65 percent of the population of the local congregation is made up of women and a disproportionate portion of the volunteers are women it is imperative that we, men, take all of the help we can get. It, also, helps us understand how to help young aspiring women leaders who are coming up through the ranks in our organization. If we are going to be relevant in coming generations this is going to be a growing necessity in the church. If we don't give women leadership opportunities within the church, they will exercise their God given gifts elsewhere and that will be a loss to the Kingdom. By the way, this goes from young men as well.

I really appreciated this book. It was recommended to me by my psychologist as a book that could help me identify my leadership style, and to stop apologizing for being human. I would say this book helped with just that. Both authors did a great job sharing examples of how different situations may arise and how you could choose to approach them. I didn't feel this book was prescriptive, rather it provides some guidance and suggestions especially for the young female leader.

This book is a little dated now and new issues have risen for women leaders, especially in the church context. It is encouraging at a base level, but seems a little light in dealing with the actual tensions that arise in men/women leadership issues in the church.

Top 10 reasons why I love Just Lead:

1. Applicable to everyone – This book is written with women leaders in the church in mind, but I think this book is applicable to everyone as #2-10 will show.

2. Practical tips and sound advice – For every topic Sherry and Jenni discuss, they offer practical tips learned from their own experiences on how to handle being lonely, afraid, insecure, criticized, indecisive, and safe.

3. Discussion questions – At the end of every chapter are questions for you to reflect on. These questions would be great for reading the book alone or with a small group.

4. Relatable authors – When reading the book, I felt like I could sit down with both of the authors and have a wonderful conversation with them.

5. Biblically based – The Bible is one of the main resources the authors draw from in how to become leaders.

6. Honest – Sherry and Jenni did not try to hide how difficult leadership especially if you are woman can be. They are honest, but offer plenty of insight on women leadership.

7. Importance of communication – One chapter is fully devoted to communication.

8. Tackles the big issues – Leaders face lots of issues. Sherry and Jenni didn’t shy away from the biggest ones.

9. Validates women leaders – Many times especially in the church, women are not allowed to be leaders, and THIS IS WRONG. Just Lead validates and celebrates women leaders.

10. Fills a huge gap in our libraries – There is a plethora of books on leadership, but many of those books are geared toward men leaders. It was a breath of fresh air to read a book aimed at discussing the issues many women leaders face.

An eye opener and confidence builder for women leading in the church. I definitely resonated with the opening chapters where Jenni and Sherry share their stories of being wired for leadership even as children. If God himself wired us that way, what are we to do with it? Jenni and Sherry do a good job answering that question! They also give some good practical advice for handling insecurity, indecision, and criticism - all of which threaten to sabotage good leadership if not handled well. Finally, they ground basic leadership principles in godliness and fruits of the spirit, always looking to elevate and encourage others in the gifts God has given them. I believe it is this outward focus that makes them the gifted leaders that they are which in turn inspires good leadership in all of us! Thank you Sherry and Jenni for this practical and encouraging work!

While this talks about reading in the church is really useful as a Christian woman leader. She uses the trendy Roosevelt "in the arena" quote as well as referencing Brene Brown so I liked that and found the book more credible because of that. Includes discussion questions. Short chapters and good takeaway advice.
