You've seen or heard of his Commentary - now read the book of the man. ‘The period between the Great Ejection of 1662 and the evangelical revival which broke out in the late 1730s is too little known and understood by evangelical Christians today. It was a time of trial and suffering for many, particularly ministers, who laboured for Christ in difficult, adverse conditions. Matthew Henry, author of the famous commentary on the Bible, was one of these and this short, readable biography of him by Philip Eveson is a welcome introduction to his life and ministry.’ Robert Strivens, Principal, London Theological Seminary.

I really like using Matthew Henry’s commentary, and so reading this book was like seeing the man behind the words. I admired him before and now I admire him in a different light. He saw his duty as a preacher as something much greater than himself, and he gave everything to his ministry even at the expense of his own health.

It made me think about how much more I can give to God in my daily life and in the little things, just like he did.

This is a wonderful, short and concise biography of one of the greatest preachers and theologians who ever lived. I was very impressed, because there is scant information about his life readily available, but the biography did an outstanding job in researching what was available.

Great short bio of my favorite Bible commentator. Thankful for this insight into the trials and challenges he faced so faithfully. If ever tempted to complain and lose heart, I want to remember how he faced the loss of so many loved ones before he even reached his 40th birthday. He is inspiring and his commentaries are some of my most treasured books.

Evangelical hagiography, but nevertheless warm, so I would give it to my son to read when he'll be 8, or perhaps 10. I've read it 10 years ago and that's what I remember about it.
Ah, and I remember one more thing - after reading Eveson's comments on Henry's view on baptism I thought that Eveson is a Baptist who is trying to be sympathetic to Henry... I was obviously wrong.

Matthew Henry - the man

Many have referred to Matthew Henry and his Commentary but little is mentioned of the man himself. This bitesize biography by Philip Evenson provides an insight into the life of Matthew. It allows us to see the heartbreak of lost family members to death. It also shows a light into the church at the close of 17th century UK.

Of you are a reader of Henry's commentary then you should read about how God prepared him for this work!

This is a brief biography of Matthew Henry. It provides an adequate introduction to his life but almost nothing on his famous commentaries.
