Bridget Wilks is a successful editor at Harper Teen and proud to be out of Texas. When she is thrust back into the hay filled fields to see her dying ‘papaw,’ she comes face to face with Levi James, the main reason she left Texas in the first place. He is still the sexy, jaw-dropping cowboy he was when she left seven years ago. Bridget tries to fight the urge she has to be with Levi, and when Christopher, her fiancé comes down, she is stuck between her past and her future. Bridget will have to decide if she wants her fiery past or her stable future.
Reader Alert! Bridget never felt she belonged in Texas until she is thrust back into the southern state to see her ill papaw and comes face to face with her ex boyfriend, Levi, who looks all too well in his cowboy hat. Levi knows how to ride a woman better than he knows how to lasso a horse.
To My I'm so glad y'all have taken the time out to read about RANCH HAND. I love the south, I've lived here my entire life. To have a chance to share a story that takes place in the Deep South is a blessing. I brought Bridget Wilks and Levi James to life because I feel every girl loves her a cowboy deep down. I also feel every girl is secretly still in love with her first love. I hope that y'all enjoy reading RANCH HAND as much as I enjoyed writing it!
About the I go by Alla Kar and I am from the Deep South. I love to write. I have two novels coming out with Black Opal books soon that are YA. I feel that every person has a story within himself or herself to tell or bring to life whether it is fiction or nonfiction. I work in the publishing world as an agent and I love the literary world and every aspect of it.
"Get your nasty cowboy boots off of my bed. It’s probably got cow shit on the bottom of them.” He laughs but puts them on the ground. “Oh, darlin’ I’m sure they do. You use to like these cowboy boots.” I still do. ‘Now, I guess you prefer loafers?” I grunt and walk toward my balcony. My room is the only one on the house that has one. The Texas air is starting to get humid and I pull off Levi’s shirt. I hand it to him. “It’s getting hot out here,’ I say. “Well, feel free to take the rest off while you’re at it.” He grins and tosses his shirt onto my bed. “Do you remember?” he asks, leaning over the railing and looking out toward the pond. “Remember what?” I ask. “All the times I use to climb the trellis to sneak into your room?” He turns toward me but I keep my eyes focused on the pond. “The times I begged for you. Begged you to let me make love to you, for you only to pull away and say you weren’t ready.” He steps forward. “The times we kissed until our lips were bruised, or us tearing at each others clothes until we were naked in each others arm.” His long index fingers pushes the strands of hair back from my neck. “Prom night,” he laughs, “or my favorite. Graduation night. The night I finally got to make love to you for the first time. In the barn. That was the best summer of my life.” A low animal sound hums through his throat. “When you let me touch you all over,” he says, his hand wondering to my waistline. I fight the urge to slap his hand back but he feels so good. Levi rests his hands on my waist and a wet hot lust consumes me. His lips flicker at my earlobe and I grab the railing for support. I feel his hardness against my ass and I shiver. Levi groans in my ear when his cell phones rings and he pulls away from me, not knowing I want him back, I want him touching me. He answers the phone and his voice is deep.
Well I don't know what to say about this one, except:
1. I read it only because of the cowboy dude 2. The heroine is pretty damn annoying 3. She cheats on her fiance with the cowboy 4. He cheats on the local slut he's dating with the heroine 5. I finished it only because of the cowboy dude.
This is quite a short read. Short as in 'it took me two hours to finish it'. And, as you may already know, I have a sort of love/hate relationship with short books. I love to read them from time to time, and then I keep saying I'll never do it again, because I need enough room for development (and a nice long-ish HEA) that's so not gonna fit in there... and it goes on and on and on. Aside from being short, it's also quite tame - not YA tame, just tamer than my (our) usual reads. But, we are pervs, so don't let that sway you from this one. What this book is most definitely NOT is epic. And, just in case you're wondering, I mean it in a very, very good way!
The story goes like this - Bridget left Texas when she was 18, and moved to NY. She's 25 now, has a great job, hot-shot-lawyer fiance, and she's coming home for the first time because her grandfather is ill. The problem is, there's someone else waiting for her there - Levi, a seriously hot cowboy, and the guy she left behind all those years ago. But, hey, she's engaged, loves her fiance, and they're not in high school anymore. So, no problem there, right? Right...
This would have been a really cute (kinda predictable), entertaining little read, if it weren't for one thing -> Bridget. That girl annoyed the hell out of me! I mean, come on! She's the ultimate high school 25-going-on-15 drama queen! In her perfect little world, she'd get married, but still get to somehow keep Levi too, so no way would he be allowed to have a girlfriend, and the most important thing of all - she wouldn't have to make a single decision in her life. Oh, wait... that almost happened anyway!
Gah! At some point, it really became too much for me. All that no, no, no, I shouldn't and I can't and Oh, daddy, he told me to grow up!... News flash? YOU SHOULD! Anyway, thanks to the predictable part I mentioned earlier, she *gasp* finally *gasp* managed to make the (right) decision. *round of applause* Ring the damn curtain down, before she changes her mind again!
Oh, and, for a fine cowboy pic... well, I thought this one would be perfect Levi (thanks Jillian)!
actually this would be a pretty good book if it was longer.
it's a nice short romance, very easy to read, kinda relaxing, if you put aside the heroine acting like spoiled brat in highschool sometimes, with a very hot and cocky cowboy (he is the reason i read it).
"If you were smart you would have grabbed your clothes too." "This was a favor to you." I laugh." How so?" "So you can look at me the rest of the way home."
"He is walking…he is walking with that Texas cowboy strut. His face is hidden beneath a dark-as-midnight cowboy hat, his shirt is off and I know it’s him. My insides flutter."
This was a short book,a novella, at only around 100 pages. I typically don't read short books because there is just never a lot of character development. However, since our friends voted for us to read this book I did, of course. I was shocked that I actually did enjoy it, I do however think the book would of been REALLY good if it would of been longer. I always feel that way after reading a novella, so don't let that sway your opinion.
Levi.......I love that COWBOY! This is what I thought through out the entire book!!
[image error] Bridgette....at times she annoyed me with all her indecisiveness concerning Levi. I mean really it's not that hard of a decision!!
Who wouldn't want that!!!!!
This was a good book if your looking for a quick read!!!
Awe, I feel like I just got a cavity the end of that was so sweet. I loved Levi instantly. How she denied that boy and ran off and left him is beyond me. It's hard for me to rate short stories because I always want more, but this was a great in between book that was a pick me up and like I said sugary sweet. Loved it.
This would be three stars if: (1) it were longer and (2) it weren't a rough draft. Major editing issues any decent editor would have caught.
The story wrapped up way too quickly for my taste. Kar could have easily developed the plot significantly to make the ending more of a payoff. Just my opinion, but otherwise a fun and quick read.
Bad awkward writing. The dialogue isnt natural at all. And the cheating, no thanks. And the no we cant i dont like you I’m getting married to oh kiss me. And the mmc pressuring and also saying fmc was a btch cause she wont kiss him?? Ex-CuSe YoU

This novella never gets off the ground. From its stereotypical portrayals of both Southern culture as well as that of the rude and unfeeling New Yorkers to the stilted dialogue that mixes overly formal tones with an attempt at dialect, it's a frustrating read. The plot is an old trope given no new life here, from the jealous girl from high school who tried to break them up to the evil boy (also from high school) who tried to force himself on the story's heroine. The grandfather's vague terminal illness with perfectly timed decline only adds to the unfinished feel of this book.
Summary: Bridget Gaines returns to Texas for the first time after moving to New York City to work as an editor. She's home to visit her dying grandfather, but once there, she has to confront ex-boyfriend Levi James and their unresolved feelings for each other. With fiance Christopher arriving in a few short weeks, she has to decide whether the past can stay in the past or not.
This was a great steamy read. I read this novella in one sitting, I loved the tension between the characters and the love. Alla Kar done a wonderful job! :)
