Paranormal Protection Unit #1

Their Unexpected Mate

Rate this book
After the devastating loss of her father, Katherine Douglas picks up her entire life and moves to the wilds of Montana. She sets about making a home only to find the unexpected—three larger-than-life men that send her perfectly planned future into a dizzying tailspin.

In the middle of a sting, Treasach “Scythe” Campbell, Quinlan “Mac” McAllister, and Sullivan “Sully” McAllister, Alpha Team for the Paranormal Protection Unit, were more worried about getting out in one piece than what the future might hold. But then in she walked—their mate. Like a punch to the gut, instincts older than time kick in, and the three men know nothing but the driving need to be with her.

They're not human, not by a long shot, but they will love her with a fierceness no other could. Will she run from what they are and what they are asking her for, or can they convince her to heed the primal call from within?

Katherine Douglas has had her fair share of upsets lately with losing her father, a ruthless step brother who seems intent on making her life a misery, and a craving that has her going into a biker bar to find it. Gross, is her first reaction as her feet stick to the floor, bending down to look she doesn't realize she has set off a chain reaction of sorts that will change her life forever.

Treasach "Scythe" Campbell knows the dainty woman is his bond mate the minute she walks in the door, looking over at his twins and best friends Quinlan "Mac" and Sullivan "Sully" McAllister he knows they are bond mates to the beauty as well. None of them had expected her to be so spunky, with a good tongue lashing issued when they curse, or how accepting a human would be to the news of what she means to them as a bond mate.

There is much more to this story that I am not including in the review so that it will reveal itself when read. I thought this was surprisingly good, I enjoyed the twists in the story. There were a few time issues in the story that jumped out at me, but aside from that highly entertaining.

Alright so I want to say first that I did enjoy this book. The author has a great imagination and I found that I really liked the characters. That being said, I also found that Honor James loves to use endearments. A lot. She'd have a character start a sentence with "Darling" add a "honey" and end with "darling" again. It got a little too repetitive for me, especially since the next character to speak would repeat the cycle!! I've read all of the books she has available (because despite this issue and some other troubles I had, I still find her characters endearing and the storyline is one I'm interested in reading while forcing myself to ignore the things that bug me) and I must say that this is the roughest. The next few seem to have better editing, but the whole overuse of endearments is present throughout. I found, too, that certain lines would be repeated fairly close together ie: "It was a dark and stormy night. Everyone was running around hiding in the woods because it was a dark and stormy night"--not from the book obviously, but you get my drift. Sometimes too, a character would repeat what they'd said, often in the same sentence ie: "I'm hungry and I think I'll get something to eat because I'm hungry" --again not from the books but you understand. I'm too lazy to go back an search out examples :P

Ignoring that, I got stuck on the fact that the Ms. James came up with a great plot twist that could (and by all rights should!) have been expanded on. Learning what we do about one character and how this influences the rest of the story and subsequently the next book in the series, I feel there should have been more. We could have had the story of this characters first few months as they navigate through their new lives. Instead, the story seems to be cut off and a few loose ends are left dangling that never really get explained. I bought the next book eager to read about its main characters, but also to see if the reader would get a glimpse of this character's growth and experience in the new position. I was disappointed to find that the character had simply assumed the role and that was that :(

What will keep me coming back to her books are her characters. They are the biggest draw for me. I can ignore some of the plot issues and enjoy the story too, but it's the characters that drive her books for me.

Scythe, Mac and Sullivan are on an undercover sting when in walks their mate. They can't believe that it is happening and quit the sting so that they can go to her rescue. Kat has no idea what is going on but when the pieces fall together, will their mating goes as planned or will it be halted by outside forces? This story draws you in and keeps you glued to the pages.

Honor James is a new-to-me author and I will definitely be looking for more from her after reading Their Unexpected Mate. LOVE LOVE LOVE the cover!!

I loved how the story started out with Katherine walking into the bar and Trey, Mac and Sully immediately knowing that she was their mate. That whole scene in the bar was so funny with Katherine touching the floor to find out why her shoes were sticking to it and then her interaction with the biker.

Oh...I immediately fell for Trey and then Mac and Sully. I liked Katherine so much in the beginning~her characters was so different than other heroines that I have read. She was kind, sweet, caring and funny. But she did start to annoy me a little in certain things that she did throughout the book. Her no cursing rule made for some funny moments, especially when the guys tried to come up with creative alternatives. Trey loving to get mani/pedi's was another funny part of the story especially since in his job, Trey was considered to be one of the deadliest men alive. And there was definitely some hot kinky foursome sex!! (Yeah!!)

The story took some turns that I was not expecting and I cannot wait to see what happens in the next book. There were things that I loved and things that I struggled with throughout the story, but the things that I loved kept me entertained and interested enough to continue reading and to continue on with the series. I am definitely interested in finding out more about Quincy/Skittles~loved him!! As well as Talon.

Good start to the series. Looking forward to Skittles book next. 3 out of 5 rating!!

Treasach "Scythe" Campbell, Quinlan "Mac: McAllister, & Sullivan are deeply involved in an active undercover sting when they scent their mate who has put herself in a dangerous situation.

Their primal mating urge compels them to quit the sting to rescue her and cart her off to safety expecting to be on the receiving end of her eternal gratitude and affection, but Katherine "Kat" Campbell doesn't need saving and proceeds to show the alpha shapeshifters that she's no pushover. And if they plan to mate her they'd better be ready to play by her rules.

* *

The blurb for this book had me salivating to get my hands on it. Alpha shapeshifter undercover bad asses come across their mate at a most inopportune moment. But fate is fate and they can't resist it's call when it happens.

With that being said you'd think I would like it right? Well, I can't say I'm a fan. Maybe it was the fanciful over the top way the storyline played out. Or the incomprehensible sex scenes that included Kat's introduction to sex (she's a virgin) being two shapeshifter penis's into her vagina and a third back door entry at the same time . Maybe it's the twists and turns that kept things fast paced but were just too much and too superficial to be believed. And even thought the climatic ending tied many of the "that's just wrong" feelings I had together, it was just a little too little too late to elevate my overall opinion.

I can't say I can in true conscious recommend this book to any but those who like a fanciful read that features a multi-partner themed shapeshifter erotic romance but don't write this series off. If the author is able to work on issues that were problematic for me, I really do think it will be a series that I could enjoy as the other "Paranormal Protection Unit" characters find their mates.

I started reading this book, and the plot seemed good. But the way the characters talked to and responded to each other just drove me crazy. I ended up not finishing it.

Examples:

She was kissed and that one (really short kiss btw) blew her mind so much that she couldn't walk or think straight. To me, this is beyond unrealistic.

A guy who only knows her name finds out her phone number and where she lives and comes over to her house. Why isn't she freaked out even a little bit? Why does she just accept this?

I don't have any quotes for this, but the characters wordings just didn't flow well in my opinion.

*Katherine gripped the counter to remain standing to whisper, “Is there anything that can be done to save him, to help him redeem his very own soul?”*

Crickey, this is poorly written. I’m a bad lady so I skipped a fair chunk until I read the bonding (aka sex scene) then I read a little bit more and stopped at 58%. I think that’s a ‘ fair crack at the whip!’

Yep, it was pretty awful but the icing on the cake was the terrible dialogue! 🤯

Not for me.

This was a good story. I liked the characters and the story was enjoyable. This is the first book I've read by this author and based on this book I'd be interested in trying more of her work.

Kat is a nice and sweet woman that is also very innocent (she can't stand cuss words and says golly gee and stuff like that). Her Father died recently and left her a lot of money which she's using part of to build a retreat for cancer survivors. When she happens to be in the wrong place at the right time, Kat ends up meeting Trey (aka Scythe) who asks to take her out. She doesn't accept but leaves things open for him to approach her later. She doesn't expect him to and is surprised when Trey shows up at her place early the next day.

Trey is a wolf shifter. He works with the paranormal protection unit and he and his "brothers" (brothers in arms) are working a sting operation when Kat walks in. All 3 of them recognize her as their mate but Trey gets to talk to her first so the 3 decide to let Trey smooth their way in. The other 2 are twin bear shifters, Mac and Sully.

Kat and Trey get to know each other for a short time and Kat feels close to him right off. She doesn't understand it but decides to embrace her instincts and go with it. During this time, Mac and Sully stay near but out of sight and protect her. Apparently the closeness helps strengthen the bond between the 4 (even when she hasn't met the other 2 yet) so later, when Kat meets Mac and Sully, she feels just as comfortable with them as she already does with Trey. The story kind of has an insta-love story-line as they're fated mates and their souls are pulled to each other right away. What confused me a few times is that the story timeline was weird...there were a couple times when the book said it had been 2 weeks when that timeframe wouldn't have worked and it seemed like it was supposed to say 2 days. This happened a few times and I wondered if the book had been written saying days but then the author tried to change it to weeks later to make it seem like it took place over a longer period of time. Not sure if that's what happened but there were a few times when I didn't think the timeline matched up completely. Nothing that ruined the story...just a little weird. Regardless of the time discrepancies, the day that Kat meets Sully and Mac (while out on a date with Trey) she pretty much realizes she wants them all and they take her home and explain everything and proceed to take her to bed and solidify the bond between the 4 of them.

While things get worked out pretty quickly in the relationship area, the 4some do have to get settled in together and learn to deal with each other. Other issues become apparent and bring problems of their own. Kat's step-brother is a greedy jerk who's trying to get her money. Also, it ends up that Kat is the last in a line of Royal Faye and will soon have many responsibilities to handle. There are some that aren't happy that her line is back and this brings danger as well. While things aren't completely smooth, the issue do get worked out and the bad guy takes a fall. Once things are settled, the 4-some get a nice HEA.

This was an enjoyable book. I liked the characters and the story was good. There were a few things that I wished had been done better (like more background on Trey, Mac and Sully would have been nice) but overall the story was good and I liked it and the MCs. I'm tempted to try the next book in the series sometime in the future.

Soon after arriving at her new digs, Katherine or a.k.a. Kat, goes on a quest to find what’s she’s been craving. Mint-pistachio ice cream. It’s during this outing in a rough and tumble bar, which is the only place in town that carries her particular vice “ice cream,” that Kat runs into one of her soon-to-be, were-shifter, bond-mates.

Review for Their Unexpected Mate:
Their Unexpected Mate tells the story of Katherine Douglas and three men that she meets. Katherine moved to Montana after the death of her father and decides to open a Bed and Breakfast retreat style environment for Cancer Survivors in memory of her dad.

I really rather liked this story, a great deal. It has some twists and turns that make you think - holy shit, seriously? But in a good way.

I think that the writer did a great job beginning this world that she’s creating for these Paranormal Protection Unit books, and if this book is any indication of what the series has to offer then I just can’t wait for the next ones that should be coming up soon according to the authors website.

Overall this is the first book that I’ve read by this author and it will not be the last.

What woman wouldn't want a wolf and a couple of bears of her very own, cause I sure wouldn't turn these sexier than sin 'Alpha' males down... I very much enjoyed the story line of this book. I loved that they wasn't afraid to verbally show their love and appreciation for one another but at times it was a little much for me. And that is the only reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars. For me Honor has started a series that I'm so looking forward to reading more of and hope she even continues beyond that. Thanks Honor, Brenda :)

The first half of it - truly awful writing style. Story line was promising, but the characters are ridiculous. The girl seems like an absolute brainless twit and had me rolling my eyes constantly. The story line was poorly executed and had my eyebrows raised pretty much constantly because there was absolutely no suspense. After about half way through it does improve, but still not great and a bit ridiculous.

Ok I hardly ever criticize a book I loved the plot loved the characters loved how fun it was but there was one thing that stopped me from giving it five star....

The endearments!!! Omg was it just me or did they spout endearments like every other word!! Darlin this darlin that sweety I can see them either beginning a sentence with darlin but to end the same sentence with another endearment was torture!! It got better half way through the book you saw less and less of them I truly loved this book and if the rest are like the latter half of this one I will be reading the next book!

P.s. I hope it's about Quincy I loved him he was so sweet!! Make me hope they ask is that a weapon in your pocket or are you happy to see me! Lmao!!

I really think this is the worst book I've ever read. I've had a couple of books I've had to power through to finish because I didn't like them. But this I hated so much, annoyed me so much I couldn't finish it. NO ONE speak this grammatically correct. They just DONT! Your not writing and English thesis. It's a Ménage smutty book. You should write it as if normal people are speaking. Also btw, if I'm going to read about a girl taking 3 guys at once during a sex scene then F*€king cussing is appropriate. Another thing, TOO MANY endearments, to only overall but in the same sentence. Don't waste your time.

I love the paranormal genre, with a specific addiction to those sexy shifters. Is it any wonder I snatch up every shifter story I can get my greedy hands on ? So I it was with gleeful abandon that I grabbed this one. But this aint your ordinary shifter story. It's something even better, as I so happily discovered.
The action starts with wolf shifter, Trey, and his bear shifter buddies, Mac and Sully lurking in a dive bar waiting on some lowlife to cuff. The guys are part of a private security team. A paranormal unit. Then their mate walks through the door. The guys scent her the minute she walks through the door.
Katherine Douglas is grieving from the death of her beloved father. The wealthy heiress relocated to Montana to carry out a personal mission. And to get away from her greedy snake in the grass step-brother. Fate was on her side when she walked into the bar looking for her fix of mint-pistachio ice cream. She ended up getting three hunky alpha shifters that just loved protecting and serving her.
I meant it when I said this wasn't an ordinary shifter romance. It's an extraordinary one. The story took so many twists and turns I kept wondering what would happen next. So many secrets are revealed that I won't even try to give any hints. Trust me when I say this one is loaded with exciting secrets. They're not all bad ones either....most of them are good secrets. The story was wildly romantic and it flowed well. The characters were strong, with only a few minor irritants. I liked how strong Katherine was and how well she adapted to her mates once they told her the truth. She didn't freak out at all, like some weaker heroines I've read. I really can't stand those chicks....we all should be so lucky to get us a hunky shifter dude. I wouldn't freak out at all. Not one little bit. Just saying.... But she did get on my nerves with all her bitching about the men cursing. Then after one of those pesky secrets came out, I thought okay, so I see now.The three heroes are shifters so it goes without saying they aren't just hot....these guys were smokin'.
I did think that the writer could have fleshed out some of the characters a bit more. I realize that she was setting up a series however, so she had a lot of ground to cover. I just thought that poor Mac got a little short changed. That's it. Those minor details didn't lessen my enjoyment one bit. In fact, I could not put this one down. Things kept happening and I couldn't tear myself away. Even the secondary characters were fascinating. The guys are part of a paranormal team so that means more hot heroes will be had. Grin....
So here's the bottom line : I loved this story and I think you'll find it as exciting as I did. I'm giving Their Unexpected Mate 4 stars.

OK, I don't usually find myself hating the books I read, and I very rarely find myself hating a book so much that I can't finish it. But this book I wanted to burn. First of all, the plot was predictable and completely unoriginal. Second, the main character was a complete disappointment. I wanted to strangle her. I wanted to reach into the pages and rewrite her character. Kat is the total opposite of what I look for in a leading lady. She had no self worth, she was in my opinion extremely naive and honestly, when I read her dialogue I pictured her speaking like a baby half the time. She needed constant reassurance, and she was very unsure of herself. In short she was timid and annoying. Even while they were all having sex she was like "Help me? Am I doing this right?" Third, the dialogue in this book (especially Kat's) didn't read at all fluidly and words were used that almost never show up in real conversation.

A few examples to show you what I mean...

( “Now then, Ms. Katherine, my momma would roll in her grave if I didn’t act like a proper gentleman now that you have given me your name,”
“Even though our mothers are gone they are always right there at our
shoulders, leading us from wrong to right, aren’t they?”
“Not all mommas, only the good ones,”
“Yeah, and mine was the best,”
“Hey now,I wasn’t tryin’ to make you sad, Ms. Katherine,”
“Oh, I know you weren’t. I just get a little melancholy sometimes.”)

I mean really how many people actually use the word melancholy in a normal conversation? Realistically people just say "sad", or "depressed"

(“I would like that, thank you. I had actually just thought to send their information off to one of those background-check companies that you can find online. This would be so very much better, however, because it would be lovely to have a singular person to deal with instead of something so impersonal as a computer.)

The fact is, people don't talk like this in real life. In real life this line would read more like, "Oh yeah, I'd love that. I was just going to send off their information to one of those background-check companies online, but this would be way better since I'll be dealing with a real person instead of a computer." In the book the line is written impersonally, and it definitely does not match the dialogue of a modern 27 year old.

All in all, this book sucked. The dialogue was unnatural, the heroin was an annoyingly timid, naive, unsure 27 who was totally dependable on others, and there was absolutely no redeeming factor in this book. No interesting, new, cool plot. No fantastic, well developed, day dream worthy characters, nothing.

***Detailed Review***

With a good start, THEIR UNEXPECTED MATE just didn’t turn out how I was expecting it too.

Bear shifter, Mac and Sully McAllister and brother-in-arms wolf shifter Scythe (Trey) Campbell are all working a seemingly normal job with their paranormal protection agency when their bond mate walks into a pub a normal human shouldn’t have able to enter.

Katherine Douglas led a seemingly normal life, but since the death of her father, her troubles just keep coming. Especially with her brother, who’s not taking his cut from the family fortune well.

What I mainly wanted was a mind blowing, wow factor between Katherine and the three ‘brothers’. I wanted that to take the whole focus of the story, but once they were bonded, which delivered what I was looking for, the story took a new turn when it was discovered she was the last heir to the fairy race.

A race that was pretty much extinct. Now, the ‘brothers’ must ensure her protection and Katherine is thrust into a role of leadership.

With the writing not being the best, in my opinion, the story just lost luster once it wasn’t all about Katherine and her men. They were never all four ‘together’ and it lacked the spark between them.

The final showdown with her brother was over pretty quick with not much action.

Overall, lacking and not worth the money.

I want to start off by saying when I normally leave my comments I also leave spoilers however this time I’ll try my best to not to give e to much away.
Okay without giving too much away the reason I have this 2 star out of 5 is because even though it has a good story line it just fall flat for me. This book was short with the amount of information and characters introduced in this book. For example you have the 4 main characters Treasach, Quinlan, Sullivan and Katherine. Well the guys go by several different names. Treassach goes by Scythe or Trey. Quinlan does by Mac and Sullivan by Sully. It was just hard bouncing from one name to the next. And it was told in several peoples point of view. You really didn't know who was thinking what unless you paid close attention and sometimes I had to re-read over a paragraph.

I really wish this book would have been a lot longer with more detail and background. Or not introduce so many people into the first book. It would have been nice to if say each chapter was told in someone else point of view instead of grouped together.

I will not be reading the other books in this series. Sorry Honor James it just didn't catch my interest like I was hoping for.

I am at a loss at the 4 star reviews...are people reading the same books as I am?

This series had possibilities if only there was not a honey and darling every other sentence, and it is in every book in the series...not just one or two.

And the dropped plot points in several of the books just killed me. In the one book of the series a supposed friend whose father has the heroine rescue her from a relationship with a drug lord, but we find out later he is in an incestuous relationship with her...the storyline goes nowhere. Nine books later and I am still wondering if anyone saved the girl from her father. Not one mention of it, and that is not the only plot bunny brought up and then forgotten mid book.

Get it together Honor James if you want us to read your books. World builing, plot and quality character interaction is key...these read like high school story writing.

What can I say about this book that can truly describe how amazing it truly was. Mrs. James has created a world of wonder with so many yummy characters that leave you wanting more and more. Each turn of the page, brings a new and exciting element to the book that was unexpected. Kat is a simple women with a love of ice cream and fear of snakes. A normal woman everyone can relate to. Her cute little no cussing rule is hit hard when she runs into three men who turn out to be her bond-mates. However, there is a twist, this small women is more than she appears, opening the world of the unknown to everyone!

I look forward to reading the rest of this series and recommend this book to everyone out there who want to be swept away by two bears and a wolf with a southern accent!

First off, you must forget everything you think you know about shape-shifters. Any preconceived notions you might have will fly out the wind as you read this. This was an actually pretty good read. You have to accept that this is a book about fated bond mates that bond quickly and forever. You also have to accept that one sex position that is quite impossible becomes possible. You have to accept a lot in order to enjoy this book but once you do you will love it. The only thing I did not love was all the names it made it sooooo hard to keep straight especially because most of the characters have nicknames.

I finally decided to read book 2 in this series and knew I needed to reread this to understand the book. I decided I really needed to suspend reality in order to enjoy this book.

I liked it for the most part. It's about Katherine, Mac (bear), Sully (bear), & Trey (wolf). The guys are part of a paranormal group that does investigating type work, which includes capturing bad guys. They find their mate in Katherine. Has some humor, some action, some surprises.

I didn't like how she doesn't like the guys swearing around her, a virgin, & is kind of soft spoken yet jumps right in to bed with 3 guys at once. The sex starts to take over the plot, when issues with her brother moves the story back on track. Could use a little more editing. Trey is taller then the other two then he's smaller then them. It reads like she's been with Trey for days yet mentions that it's been over a week.

I like the characters, but hate the term 'baby' being used so much.

I love the opening of this book! The end.

OK, it's not the end, but I really did enjoy how Honor has her characters meet in the bar. I liked everything about it. That's why I just reread the book, because I remembered liking the characters and the story so much.

Then . . . I remembered why I didn't give this book 5 stars. *sighs*
The story line is great, the characters are wonderful, the dialog is . . . not. It is very awkward and juvenile! I almost had to force myself to keep reading at times because it was so irritating. However the story kept me going because that part, I liked.

I'm undecided whether to give this series another try with the next book or not.

It was an okay story.
The premise behind it was great. The world and characters were also well done. It was the repetition that was off putting and the way that Ms James made you feel like an imbecile. The over simplification of things and they way she spelled things out that made you feel stupid. I skipped through a fair bit just for this reason. The book could actually have been shorter if she didn't feel the need to break everything down and over explain and express.
Hopefully the next is better written.

DNF. Didn't like the writing style, the constant repeating of sentences from one character to the other. Three weeks of relationship development summed up in two paragraphs. Virgin with no hymen has a three-way menage vaginally and anally with minimal preparation because - ah, lo and behold - she is part of a magically thought to be extinct race so can cope with that. No shock what so ever about magical creatures that appear to be immortal but don't have to deal with pesky things like everyone noticing they don't age.
