I liked this one much more than the first book in the series.
Cat and Blake were high school sweethearts, torn apart by what were at the time insurmountable obstacles for them both. The intervening years weren't the best for either of them: Cat was disfigured and almost killed during a savage attack by a horse she was rehabilitating, and Blake endured many years of an unhappy and loveless marriage. Fast forward 18 years - they meet again at a 4-H camp Cat is working at, unbeknownst to either of them, where Cat is teaching Blake's young teenage daughter. Past hurts are put aside and they begin to explore a relationship with each other using adult eyes and emotions.
This was a pretty emotional book despite the short length (157 pages). I did like the way Blake and Cat were able to reassess their past relationship with fresh eyes and realize their young love wasn't meant to be, and didn't play the blame game. I also very much liked that Cat was willing to go the distance when it seemed as if things were about to fall apart again through no fault of hers or Blake's.
I'm loving these stories from this author. Great cowboy characters and storylines are different - not all the same, really varied plots. Can't wait for the next one! 4☆
I really enjoyed this installment in the series. I am still not a big fan of the narrations he sounds just too old for the characters.
I liked that Cat wasn’t overly dramatic about her past, it was just what it was and she was moving on from it.
I liked Blake for the most part, there was one scene with a 16 yr old boy he kicked out of his house it just left a bad taste in my mouth like it was just unnecessary. Even being a single father and seeing that they were actually studying it was just too much. But say la vee, the rest of the book was enjoyable.
There isn't much to say about this story except how incredible it is to think that you can leave the man you loved for almost 15 years, come back into his life, on the down low, and still have him love you as if you never left... that only happens in a romance. *giggles*
The romance between the main characters actually wasn't the main focus in the story between Cat and Blake actually... it was the fact that Blake's ex-wife wanted to take his daughter to live with her.
Even though the couple had their drama with Cat leaving Blake 14-15 years ago, they both understood why it happened. Cat just wasn't strong enough to live in a town where her father was abusive to her, and Blake just wasn't ready to leave the only life he knew, loved and well actually never wanted to leave. At the time they were both so young and didn't realize that their love would have made either of them happy with their choice had one just followed the other... but as with most young people life just makes things happen sending them back where they belong. For Cat it was a combination of things from her grandmother becoming ill... other things made it hard for her to face Blake when she returned but lucky for her, working at the 4-H where Blake's daughter happened to be a student led her right back to her true love.
Blake is an incredible man actually, one who truly loves hard... though the only thing I didn't like about him was that he was willing to let things go even when he didn't want too. ME, if I had loved Cat as much as he seemed to have loved her, I would have gone after her 15 years ago... but then if he had done that, Cat wouldn't have gone through what she did and learned to be a stronger person and he wouldn't have had Demi he's daughter... so I guess it was a good thing he was able to let things go no matter how much it hurt.
Cat Hayden hasn't had an easy life. She grew up with two alcoholic parents. The only good thing about her childhood was being with Blake McBride but after finishing high school she wanted nothing more than to leave town and Blake wouldn't go with her so they broke up and she left on her own.
When she was 19 working working with a rancher on rehabilitating horses the horse turned on her broke many bones, cracked her skull and cheek. This required both brain surgery and extensive plastic surgery which changed her looks. This also ended her barrel racing days.
Nineteen years later she comes home to take care of her grandmother but doesn't reconnect with old friends from her past. The accident has left her more of a introvert and insecure about her looks.
While teaching a horse club to 4-H'ers she finds out one of the girl's in the group is Blake's 14 year old daughter Demi. To say they are both shocked to see each other is an understatement.
Blake realizes as soon as he see Cat that his feelings for her have never changed in the 19 years since she left him. He knew she wanted to leave Prescott but be never thought she'd leave the way she did. After marrying a woman who turned out to have both a drug and alcohol addiction and end the end walking away from him and their daughter his made his life be about his ranch and his daughter.
This book covered a range of subjects from dealing with the after effects of a traumatic brain injury, being the children of addicts for which both Cat and Demi are, messy custody battles and many other things. I thought the author did a very good job of showing a realistic view of these things.
There are myriads of novels about two lovers who have left one or the other behind, who come back in several years to re-ignite their relationship. But in this novella, Ms McCray brings together lovers after nearly two decades of time and distance, both of whom are now divorced, both of whom have wondered if love would ever find them, and both of whom still cherish what they shared in a deeply hidden part of their hearts. Now Cat and Blake re-unite as friends, as CPA (Cat) and client(Blake) as well as possible lovers. There is some hot loving here, but there is also a 14 year old daughter that is critical to Blake's happiness, a grandmother who is terminally ill who is terribly important to Cat, and an ex-wife who is determined to make Blake's life a misery as she tries to take his daughter away from him. There are surprises here and some emotional highs and lows that keep the reader glued to the story. It's a terrific read and one that will surely be a satisfying reading experience for those who like an intense love story.
It's a beautiful romance when Cat returns to her home town to take care of her ailing grandmother and runs into Blake McBride .... the boy she left behind so many years ago. Blake has never stopped loving Cat, but since she had left town without a look backwards, he's not sure he can trust her with his heart again.
They both have issues to overcome. He has a teenaged daughter whose mother abandoned them both. Cat has a disfiguring scar on her face that has left her so different from the happy girl she used to be. Throw in a vindictive ex-wife who now decides she wants custody of their daughter and anything could happen.
This is a nice romance with some explicit intimate moments. I liked seeing the characters work so hard so make up for all the lost time and bruised hearts.
A love like Blake and Cat's is rare. What's even rarer is finding it again after life has pulled a couple in two different directions. I truly believe this story will touch many reader's hearts. Some will relate to a "lost love". Many have dealt with an ex, like Blake has, who is battling or battled a drug/alcohol addiction. Countless people have or are in the middle of a divorce with a child involved. But this story has what we all want in life...... A HAPPY ENDING. :)

Roping Your Heart: Riding Tall is the second chance romance story between Blake McBride and Cat Hayden. Their love story began 19 years before the start of this story, back when the two were just young high school kids in love. Cat always had dreams of getting out of the small town she grew up in and away from her abusive, alcoholic parents. Blake McBride did not share her wanderlust and wanted to remain in town and work the ranch. A simple life with his high school sweetheart and true love was his hearts desire. Alas; Cat made the tough call to sprout her wings and fly. A tragic accident many years earlier may have altered Cat's appearance and career plans, but her experience as a barrel racer and an ailing grandmother brings her back to the small town she ran from and smack dab into Blake McBride's life once again. It is obvious right from the start that still waters run very deep and Cat and Blake are quite certainly still madly in love with one another. The question is...what do they plan to do about it this time? And who will get in their way? While 19 years may not have changed their feelings for one another, the circumstances of their lives have changed quite a bit. Blake has been married & divorced, and is now the single father to a fourteen year old daughter (Demi). He also has a very selfish, deceitful and conniving ex-wife to contend with. Sally does not plan to make anything easy for Blake or Cat. Will she cause just enough trouble to keep true love at bay? Will Demi do everything in her power to rekindle the relationship between Sally and Blake, or will she see the light in her father's eyes that only shines for Cat?
This story is so multi-faceted that it really truly surprised me. Cheyenne McCray has written a story with so many layers and subplots happening that I could not resist feeling captivated. It was pure enjoyment! I am an absolute sucker for a real good guy which Blake most definitely is. Add to that my weakness for cowboy romance, single dad romance, and second chance romances and you've got yourself the makings of the perfect country romance story. While the chemistry between Blake and Cat is undeniable, and they definitely generated some heat, this is not a sex, sex, sex, on every page storyline. It's about the feels and the journey of two people who've always held each other's hearts. I loved it and hope you will too!
3.5 stars The heart never forgets it's first love.
I really enjoyed this book. It's a really good story with a little steamy romance and a HEA. You'll want to keep your earbuds in for parts of this book.
Even though this is a second chance at first love story there is so much more going on. For a shorter story there is a lot packed into it. It's well written, flows smoothly and while it is a sweet story in many ways there are times it is also an emotional roller-coaster and covers some very serious events in each of the main characters lives.
Both Cat and Blake were immediately likable and relatable. You can't help but root for them from the start. As well as be just as heartbroken and sad as they are when they faced with past and present events in their lives. I'm trying not to give away any spoilers about the story.
David Quimby did a great job with the narration. Perfect voice for this type of story. It has that rough little edge with a slight country feel. Clearly spoken with a nice even pace. Really good character voices. Both male and female. Perfect tone and delivery. He brings the characters, their emotions and the story to life. Very enjoyable.

Book two in the Riding Tall series might just be the perfect definition of a romance novel. Cat was raised by alcoholic parents. Her mom died which gave her a chance to live w her grandmother. After graduation she will run from this town to be away from her father. Blake McBride comes from a ranching family and is tied to the land. In love at eighteen they are torn apart.
For the next eighteen years they have lived their lives. Cat was working with an abused horse by herself who almost killed her leaving a once beautiful face now scarred. She married, had a daughter who died, then divorced. She is now an accountant and headed home to help her grandmother who is in poor health. Blake, a successful rancher has one pride and joy. His fourteen year old daughter, Demi. Divorced and with full custody Blake discovers Demi’s new 4H leader is returned to town Cat, or KitCat to him.
Blake receives an audit notice and meets his new accountant, Cat. They spend time together and soon that high school love slams back but brighter than before. Happily ever after doesn’t happen….yet. Cat is tied to home with her grandmother. Blake looses custody of his daughter and can’t live without her. He makes plans to sell his ranch and move to Tennessee. History is repeating itself.
Single dad and second chance romance combined in one book! How can you possibly go wrong with this combination? Cheyenne McCray has written a wonderful installment to the Riding Tall series with single dad, Blake McBride and his returning high school sweetheart, Cat Hayden. So much has happened in 19 years of the two being apart, but the draw between them is too strong. With a strong willed 14 year old, a crazy ex-wife and baggage on both sides to sort through, this couple navigates through life's tragedies and happiness. McCray has a way of drawing the reader in and keeping you there with that hometown family feel with a little angst and a lot of romance.
David Quimby returns to narrate book 2 of this series. I love his voice, perfect for the western romance. He provides such great passion and emotion with his voice through his well discernible characters making my earbuds stay in until the book has completed! Always look forward to his narrations and really enjoyed this performance.
A second chance for first love...or is it their one love?
Blake has alwats been the only one for Cat....
Cat has always been the only one for Blake....
But as teenegers they were too young, they needed different things out of life and it ripped them apart. Now they are both finally back in the same place and whilst they are different people now, with different responsibilities, their love picks up as if no time has passed. I love seeing Cat and Blake fall in love all over again, their hearts still recognise each other and their bodies still move as one. But whilst the chemistry is the same, their hurdles this time are very different, maturity make make it easier to talk, rather than running, but it cannot erase distance when life once again throws them a curve ball that threatens to rip them apart. This is a lovely book which listened to on Audible.
This book covered a range of subjects; including addiction child custody, child abuse, the death of child and other issues that may be sensitive for some people.
Cat and Blake were high school sweethearts, first loves, and then she broke up with him, left home to get away from her abusive father. Now she is back after many years. Cat has been through a lot! Child abuse, traumatic brain injury, broken marriage and the lost of a child.
Blake is now divorced and a single dad to his 14 year old daughter. He and Cat now have a second chance at love but they have many twists and turns before they can have their HEA.
The story is skillfuly written, it is realistic, engaging so it was easy connect with all the emotions of the characters.
Cat Johnson, a former barrel racer , finds herself back home ;. Looking after her Grandma . She is a different person, from the young woman who left, scarred both emotionally and physically, She left behind her first and true love Blake. It has been 18 years since the two last met. Cat is now teaching Blake's daughter Barrel racing. Blake is fighting to keep his daughter, from his ex , will this causes him to choose between the woman he loved, that he still loves, and his daughter.
Brilliant characters and hot sexy scenes. Cowboys and romance .. oh yes
It didn’t feel like Blake and Cat had any chemistry. Their interactions felt forced.
Also, I had a hard time with Cat. She is obsessed with a facial scar that she’s had for almost 20 years and called her breakup with Blake the “worst night of her life”, despite the fact that her daughter DIED.
And, by all means, break the news of a paternity test to a 14-year-old and then leave her alone for the night. A+ parenting.

From Audible Account Review: A great story of second chances! Cheyenne McCray did an excellent job depicting the emotions and difficult situations of pasts that separated a great love. I'm always a bit hesitant of stories involving custody battles but am glad for the HEA for everyone. David Quimby is a fantastic narrator who never disappoints!

They had teenage love and after a fight she fled with another. She was severely infured and is scarred and no longer looks like herself 19 years later to care for her grandmother and he's divorced, raising his teenage daughter. I felt this one had a lot more depth than the first one. I enjoyed the characters, there were a few minor editing items but overall and enjoyable read.

Audiobook Review Great story, and fantastic narrative. Lost love, second chance romance, who doesn't like those! David Quimby never disappoints, always an enjoyable listen for me.
Roping Your Heart is one of the contemporary series about Cat who came back to her hometown for her grandmother after years of staying away from everyone including her teenage love, Blake whom she left for a better life, away from her miserable father. Scarred from an incident with a horse and from her miserable marriage which end with the tragic lost of her daughter. She came back to her old world and seemed to never remember why she wanted to leave in the first place when she sees Blake whom she still had feelings for him again.
Blake was now a divorcee and a father for his daughter Demi. Years later, Blake never seemed to hold a grudge against Cat for leaving him when they were young as he understood her need to be away from their small town and his need to stay with his family and the land. Meeting Cat again brought the undying flame within him and he intended to pursue and determined to never lose her again.
I was interested with the book from the blurb given and I do enjoy some of Cheyenne contemporaries. But this book weakness was the character development between Cat and Blake. It happened and suddenly they’re onto each other again like they never separated.
I do enjoy the other western Wild series that Cheyenne does, but the other series does have another focus in the story like border smuggling and law enforcement thing that provide a side story for the characters. This time, the emphasize is on drama that centered around Blake’s finding his true love again and the risk of losing his daughter’s custody. I do enjoy how that part of the story played out but Cat and Blake’s storylines itself seemed to be barren than the part about Demi.
I could say I was disappointed in this book but I did enjoy the story that centered around Demi that I was still in fifty-fifty with my perception of this book. I like it but not enough for me to immerse myself with the subsequent books in the series. Its still too vanilla despite the obvious explicitness of this genre.
She tilted her head to the side. “Even though I don’t look the same?”
He gave a slow nod. “It doesn’t matter a damned bit that you look a little different.”
“A little different?” She shook her head even as his words echoed in her mind. “You didn’t even recognize me.”
“You know that a part of me did.” He studied her eyes. “You’re just as beautiful as you ever were. You’re still KitCat to me.”
3.5+ RATING- I recently read my first Cheyenne McCray book and enjoyed it (Hidden Prey/romantic suspense) so decided to try out another series by the author and read Roping Your Heart, which is book two in the Riding Tall series and is told through the dual POV of the main characters, Cat and Blake. Although it's the second book and all the books are sequential, I didn't have a hard time jumping in, so I think it works fine for a stand-alone. I do plan to read future books in the series in order. For readers that like to read series in order, start with book one, Branded For You.
I enjoyed the book. It was a quick enjoyable read. Not overly steamy, the sexy bits were well done and the steam level is what I expected from this contemporary story. This is a second-chance romance and the re-connection between the heroine and the hero is pretty instant, there's not a lot of build up, which worked for me just fine. I liked that the characters were older and the romance was the focus of the story, not any over the top dramas. The blurb mentions a teenage daughter that isn't a fan of the relationship so I was a bit worried that her role in the book would be overdone but it wasn't, just typical and realistic teenage stuff.
I'd recommend this book for readers that enjoy second chance romances and shorter contemporary romances that feature cowboys/ranchers. I'm currently able to borrow the series through a subscription service I'm using (SCRIBD) so will be checking out more books in the series soon.
A wonderful story of love lost and rediscovered...possibly.
Cat Johnson, a former barrel racer, comes back home as a different person. Scarred both emotionally and physically, she tries to rebuild her life. Coming home should have been a good thing but she wasn't quite sure based on how she'd left it some 18 years before.
Blake couldn't believe his eyes when he discovers that the alluring yet also very familiar person that had been coaching his daughter was his long lost love, Cat Johnson.
Caught in a custody battle, Blake's ex is shooting one ultimatum after the next which causes him to choose between the woman he loved, that he still loves, and his daughter.
You'll have to read "Roping your Heart" to find out what happens in the beginning, the middle and end to shape these characters the way that they are.
Filled with characters you love to love, some you love to hate, other that grow on you...throw in some romance, drama and some well-learned lessons and you'll enjoy this read as much as I did.
This was decent. I will say, it surprised me. I wasn't planning on reading anymore in this series but I'm glad I did. I liked this one more than the first in the series. The characters in this one were more complex and more emotionally scarred.
I didn't notice a lot of overly descriptive details like in the first one and if they were there the story kept me from noticing.
I lean a little toward the vengeful side and didn't like the way Sally got away with all her sneaky, conniving bitchiness. The other thing was the way it ended. Yes, everyone got their HEA but it was just a little to easy.
I'm 2 books in now, I'll be finishing this series only because I have to know what happens to everyone.
I really liked this book and the characters as well as the whole story. The whole custody situation was great to read about and really brought a complicated situation that happens all to often to light. This whole book had a pretty strong back story...all the different characters were very well fleshed out. I knew while reading the previous book in this series that I was going to like Blake's story and it didn't disappoint me one bit. So far this has been my favorite...let's see what the next few books are like.
A bit better than the first in this series. I love second chance romances though. I fell for Blake almost immediately, but could have done without his super serious flaw of overreacting when it came to his daughter. When his ex shows up and takes his daughter from him I nearly melted for this man. Poor guy. I wish there had been more about him than Cat, but I enjoyed her story as well.
Cat was a pip, and I liked how she was stronger than Megan, especially considering her accident and the resulting trauma to her heart and body.
