Assassin/Shifter #13

Pleading the Fifth

Rate this book
A simple trip to the airport brings Scott Delange just about everything except the passenger he was planning to pick up. Texting back and forth with a raunchy, unknown man leads to a case of mistaken identity and one hell of a huge surprise.

Who knew a trip to Seattle would land Tristan Miles in the arms of his mate? Certainly not Tristan, who stopped looking for love a long time ago. When he meets Scott Delange, Tristan realizes the man is his. For life.

There’s just one little issue. The two men can’t stand each other. Tristan is used to being the alpha male and that’s bad news when his mate is wired the same way. Clawing and fighting to be top wolf causes more friction between the two men who sure do kiss a lot for people who can’t stand each other.

Can Tristan back down? Can Scott? Are both men guilty of too much pride? Maybe both should plead the Fifth.

I have been blessed in this life to not only have parents that support me, but kids that do as well. I grew up in a loving but "Old School" French household. My parents worked for the airlines (TWA) so I was able to see a lot of Europe as a kid. I moved to Seattle Washington at the age of 22 and stayed there for twelve years before moving to Alaska for a little over two. Fairbanks, AK was one hell of an experience and I wouldn't hesitate to go back! I spent a little over a year in South Carolina before moving back to Arizona. I then left for Kansas for five years and now reside in Arizona. I've been connected to the military in one way or another for over half my life and wouldn't change a thing about it. Writing has become my full time job and I've never been so happy doing a job I love and being able to do it in my jammies. I plan on writing until I dry up and die. Hopefully, that won't happen soon!

We don't call it "the five"; it's I-5.

It's so hard to keep the names straight as the characters are all the same. There are so many J names that aren't even in the family that gave their kids J names. James Jacobs, Jacob, Jackson, Jonas, Jesse, Justice, and Jude are all characters in one book and there are more in others. There's Nicholas and Nicolai. Nadine and Aideen and Aiden and Caden and Chance Christianson and Kellan and Connor and Chaz and Cole who are always together but aren't mated and Locke and Logan who live together as well and also aren't mated and Kory and Keegan and Devin and Derek. Wyatt, Wesley, and Wayne are good guys while Pierce and Petey are bad. But then Preston is good and Carl is bad. There are so many letters that haven't been used for names not to mention names with more than one or two syllables which most if these are. There are also names that don't sound white and/or that have been around more than a few decades. What makes matters worse is that there is more than one couple developing in each book plus at any given time there are several unrequited loves.

All these books have major info dumps, poor segues that are rather random. Head hopping mid paragraph. Thinking a bad headache equals migraine (which it can be but isn't always and usually is a lot more). So hard to keep the names straight as there are so many characters and almost all are the same. I need a family/pack/character tree because most of the time I'm lost as to who is who. The only non-WASP white sounding names are Mateo from the first book and Nicolai which sounds too similar to Nicholas.

How does semen hit the wall in spurts when he's facing away from it? This happens twice.

He and he's fine because he shifted? Why didn't they try to induce shifting if that's all it took?

Tristan is willing to bottom because they are equals. So if you only bottom you aren't equal?

Excellent peril.

As a whole, I've become completely enamored with this series, and I can't believe I didn't discover this gem of a paranormal MM series sooner! I really enjoyed reading the latest installment that I absolutely couldn't put it down until I finished it at 4 in the morning. Suffice it to say, I have little to no complaints about 'Pleading the Fifth', possibly making it my favorite one (so far) in the Assassin/Shifter series. Ultimately, I am practically sitting on the edge of my seat anxious to read more of Ms. Gasq-Dion's books in this series. Also, at this point I am absolutely DYING to read about Andrei and Devin and Nikolai and Colin. In fact, I'll re-read over their tiny moments in the spotlight just to placate myself for the time being. I mean, how can anyone not love and indulge in the witty repartee between Andrei and Devin?!

Well, at least getting some actual friction between the mated pair is new. Other than the obvious kind, I mean.

As such, this wasn’t so bad; it simply did not blow me away either, nor did it fill me will the warm fuzzies. Perhaps in some part that might result from my not being happy with the general direction of the series. *shrug*
Still, Scott and Tristan brought something faintly new to the table, interaction-wise. (And yet we have several more people set up for much of the same since – oh, forever.)

Other than that, a few moments gave me pause.

If Tristan’s longest relationships have lasted less than a week (and they broke up with him), how can he have had so many cheating lovers? Hm.

As usual, women are… *sigh*
Well, let’s put it like this. Evangeline, a doctor in her own right, in this book has the role of sexy quickie at the office for her man, as well as encouraging him when he tries to with his medical expertise. Yeah. A sexy cheerleader.
Nadine’s still all about cooking and babies. And the female wolves are being used as breeding machines. That’s about it.

Speaking of which, if everyone’s going to get pregnant at the same time, there’s going to be a babyslopsion down the line. Of psychic babies, no less! Maybe they should create a psychic wolf baby day-care; they certainly have the money.

And that reminds me of yet another thing. Riley, everyone’s favourite darling billionaire, who is the go-to guy in any emergency money or compassion can solve – do you guys recall that he makes his money in the weapons business?
Now, I am not saying this is inherently a reprehensible thing, but think about it. His business is death and dismemberment. Kind of an awkward contrast to his sweet and caring disposition.

Lastly, I am confused about some of the setups here. Not only was Nikolai going after some waiter instead of the man he’s established up as wanting, but three other future couples have been introduced without the mate effect taking place despite the fact that five out of the six people involved are wolves. Maybe they were all suffering from a really bad cold that day that sealed up their sinuses.

4.5 stars. Think this is my favorite so far. Scott and Tristan are funny, sexy, hot, argumentative, domineering and delightfully mated. It doesn't take long for the mating bond to overrule their mutual hatred for each other, but it is a fun ride until you get there.

One thought I will take with me from this book until the end of this series, unless it happens sooner. Thank you, Scott, for putting it in my mind. Devin and Andrei - angry sex. God, I hope this happens at some point.

And, I still want more Nikolai, so I'm looking forward to his story as well. Ok. Off to the next segment!

So I just realized today that if I used all the tags on my shelf for these books, it'd be like twelve - cops, athletes, military, weres, witches, etc. etc. etc. It's getting crazy!

This is one of my favorite tropes - MCs who can't stand each other but are fighting their incredible attraction to each other. Tristan and Scott are crazy hot for each other but they can't be in the same room for 5 minutes without getting into a fight. They both are used to being top dog and they are also both good at protecting themselves from being vulnerable or hurt. Neither wants to admit that they are jealous or that they are practically panting at the sight of the other one. They are pretty funny as they do this dance around each other.

Tristan knows that Scott is the one for him, but he's having trouble expressing it - and so is Scott. Threats against Scott though make Tristan doubly wary though about what is going on and when someone follows through on those threats, Tristan nearly loses his mind.

Honestly, it was a bit of a roller coaster ride on this one, but we do get some really nice moments as well - with a wedding or two and an unexpected potential pairing. We'll have to wait for the next installment to see what happens.

Really enjoying this series, such a good way of introducing different characters from new areas....... just feel like I need to do a family tree equivalent to keep track of who went with who in the earlier books! Although I imagine if I google it somebody may have done so already!! I must admit I normally get bored with most series beyond number six but this has kept my interest.

Looking forward to Logan's story after the taster in this one.

Okay, this part is the best one so far. I really love both main character here. Scott and Tristan were perfect for each other. Gosh this story is full of humor, sarcasm and comical arguments between both MC's. I really do recommend this part to everyone, even if you read it as stand alone, I'm sure it will be an amazing, experience full of humor, sarcasm and well developing arguments. I simple love it all!

Tristan and Scott were great together but there was not enough page time for these two. It seemed to me like this book was needed for the story line and the main couple got not enough attention for this reason Nevertheless, for me is this book on the third or fourth place in this series so far. Can't wait for Devin and Andrei story ... The reason I started this series

Loved this installment in the series and cannot wait for the next. I won't spoil it, but there's one heart-wrenching moment when I thought I wouldn't stop crying.... Thank you Sandrine for your wonderful work and looking forward to finding out about more of these wonderful characters!

The best of the series so far. I liked the banter and bickering of Scott and Tristan, who were mates but didn't really want to be. Less POV problems in this installment, but still HUGE issues with the introduction of too many secondary characters. If I cannot keep all the guys straight (pun intended), it brings my rating down.

I think there should be the main couple and perhaps a sub-plot with another couple for an upcoming book, but too many subplots like Jesse, his brothers, Jonas and Jackson, plus the lingering Colin/Nik thing, it just becomes plain confusing. Plus, it takes away time from the main couple, which is what I bought the book for.

Lastly, you cannot read these books as standalones, another huge problem for readers who might just pick this book up and not realize this is part of a series. While some threads should be in the series, each book should be able to be read as a separate novel not requiring any further knowledge except for the paranormal element. Meaning each book should be self-contained.

Other than those issues, which I think the author can overcome with some editing advice; overall, I enjoyed Pleading the Fifth.

Just finished this for the 2nd time, Tristan and Scott get together and the dialogue is witty and fun. I always think that a mark of a good book is how many highlights you have at the end of it, and this book has lots.

Each time I read this I enjoy it more, probably because I now know all the secondary characters and that makes it easier to follow.

I still think this series needs a flow chart of the characters and how they all connect!

I think this one rises to the top as one of my favorites, there was nothing I didn't like about it. It had me laughing, mad, and then crying. Sandrine's writing has a way of pulling me in and caring what happens to these men. I actually cried like a big baby! I wish I could give it more stars, it was just THAT good.

I really love this smutty creamy crack comfort read of a series. It is really good. I thought Tristan & Scott worked really well together and I loved all the supporting cast as usual. This is the perfect bit of action, paranormal, and smut mixed in well together.

My favourite of the series so far. Lots of friction and some of it even makes sense! ;) I enjoyed the developing relationship (starting from enemies) of our alpha MCs; their snarkiness and jealousy was highly entertaining.

Another great add to the series. Scott Delange and Tristan Miles were just hilarious to me. Both butting heads til the end. Different couple then what we are use to, fresh and exciting, Can't wait for the next.

I haven’t read all the books in this series, so that of Scott and Tristan was almost a new story to me, most of the supporting characters were known, but their dynamics not entirely clear and in a way, to me, this made for a better read, because nothing was “expected”. One trait of the author I found again in this novel is her satirical twist, a humor sense that says to the reader, come on, we are here to have fun, don’t take life too seriously. This series is made mostly of men (even if there are positive female characters here and there) and these guys want to have fun, they like to have sex, and to have a beer soon after, to watch sports while snuggling on the coach, to leave their dirty dishes on the kitchen sink until the morning after and maybe even later.

ETM Scott and lawyer Tristan are no different, considering also that, before being a lawyer, Tristan was a navy SEALS. Add to that both of them are werewolves, mates and both with an Alpha streak to the booth and you have the perfect recipe for a snarling before kissing romance. Scott and Tristan cannot bear each other but at the same time the mate bond is so strong they are driven to each other. They don’t want to mate, but they cannot have sex with other men, not only since, when one of them is trying, the other is ready to ruin everything.

Everyone around them is suggesting to let the fate have its course, but they are both stubborn and it will not easy to accept the unavoidable.

Due to the fact that I’m reading the books letting time pass between each of them, I’m not sure which is my favorite until now, but I quite liked the light core of this one, plus I found it sometime even cute and tender, without depriving the men of their 100% manliness.

I love all of Sandrine Gasq-Dion's stories. The assassin shifter series is as addictive as caffeine! In this book, we get to experience Scott and Tristan's mate bond. Being two alpha males, the sparks flying are not always good ones. Scott is so pissed at Tristan because he was supposed to pick him up at the airport and Tristan left early because he was tired of waiting for his late ride. Sebastian has the gift of sight having been born of a female warewolf who was turned by a created one. He knows how it will play out, but he cannot tell what he sees. The two alphas fight like crazy because neither wants to submit. When Scott is infected with rogue saliva and lies dying in the hospital, Tristan realizes how much he cares about Scott. Will Scott die from the fever? Or will love reign supreme? Can two alphas ever surrender to the mate bond? And what awesome songs will we hear in this book? If you are not addicted to this series by this point, you must be dead. The best part of these books is the way Sandrine shows that love in every form is truly beautiful, and the stigma of what a gay man is supposed to be like is completely wrong. I love that she shows us how we are all the same, wanting to be loved for who we are, regardless. I will one click anything this author publishes because she is the best story teller bar none!

To say I was reduced to tears is an understatement. I LOVE Scott and Tristan. This one made me laugh out because of their banter, but yet, I cried at my eyes out during the 2nd portion. Alpha males, you gotta love em ;) Who knew I'd be heartbroken while reading about two people who hate each other?

What's up with Jonas and Jackson? Oh and I want Nikolai and Colin's story, like NOW! As well as Andrei and Devin's story. YUM! That's going to be so volatile it's going to be amazing. Then we see a little bit of Noah and Jesse, potential? I am also looking forward to Jacob and Kory's story, but I am bummed they have to share with Will and Seth.

I really tried. I read multiple books of Sandrine Gasq-Dion because I didn't understand why everyone loves her books but me.
I tried and I failed. She's not for me.

I find her writing immature and not interesting. The plots are thin and everything is so cliché, easy and expected. There is no originality. This is not a product worth selling to me. It looks too much like fan fiction, and not the best kind.

I'm not trying to be mean, this is only my opinion. I wanted to read at least 3 books before giving up on her.

It's an alright story, but of course there is the instant lust, even if they dislike each other at first. Also I'm somewhat confused about all the names. Is there a glossary I'm missing? If not there should be!
There are so many different relationships and I forget who was who or haven't read that volume and am feeling like I'm missing something.
The series is a bit of a guilty pleasure and makes for an easy read, there are characters that are mentioned and I'd like to read more about.

I loved Scott & Tristan's story! I loved that is was turbulent in the beginning as they were both bull headed alpha males. I loved to read about all the characters from the previous books in this series, it's nice to read about what they are up too as well. It had humor, frustration, and hearbreak(ie. when Tristan is at Scotts hospital bedside.....OMG I cried but I had to take huge gulps of air to keep myself from balling like a baby what a heartwrenching scene!!! Sandrine, you are a spectacular author and I love your books, this one is no different!!!

So not my favorite. Fighting kissing fighting. For the love of all that is holy get over yourself. These two did not belong together. They were immature jerks. Wait maybe they deserved each other. I have no hope that they have a future because who could stand to be with either for any length of time. I wish the books had a strong woman in there somewhere. They are always cooking for their men caring for them and now the shewolves are gladly going to have their babies and just hand them over. How great is that. This series is really getting on my nerves.
